(Paused video) That MX5 DOES have electrically powered side mirrors. At 4:37 you can see the controls on the door behind the cupholder. I own the exact same MX5 (2006) and have electric mirrors.

And heated side mirrors. I didn’t know I had them, but the control for the heated rear window also activates the heaters in the side mirrors!

Nicholas Engelbrecht yeah, it was a nice surprise. When I enter my garage, I have to open the window to push on the button for the light (it’s a big garage for 3 apartment buildings) and it was winter and I had been using the window heater and I felt heat emanating from the side mirror when I passed by it with my hand to push the button. I was startled and felt my mirror and it was hot! Now I use it all the time to get rid of rain of the mirror and it works perfectly for that.

I love my mk3 MX5. Cobalt exhaust adds a bit more drama under load. Absolutely gutless low down the revs, great when kept above 4-5k revs

It is still less reliable that the Mazda. Also, the cost of repairs are much higher compared to the Mazda. With that being said, if one decides to purchase a Z4, I couldn't care less, it's not my money. To each their own.

A more equal comparison would be the Z4 vs the NC Miata GT, which has cruise control, climate control, remote trunk release. I'll give the nod to the Z4 on looks and power, but I'd still take the Miata. The Z4 will be MUCH more expensive to buy and own. Should have done more driving tests. The magic of the Miata is how much fun it is, even at moderate speeds.

Well done! Both spectacular rides. Next, the newest MX-5 begs comparison; the ND 2019 or 2020. I'd be happy owning the newer MX-5 in a soft top for errands, and the "Zed" for formal occasions.

I know this video is a few years back now but I’ve owned a Z4M roadster for a couple of years now and it’s great fun. So much power! But it is a very stiff ride and probably more power than I need unless I’m in the track. My wife also does not like it much. It is also expensive to maintain I have found. So I picked up an MX-5 RF GT recently and it’s quite nice. I’ll sell the Z4M this spring and will be very happy for having owned it.

Interesting, the sport model is the base model in the US. If this was a 2006, it's also missing engine and suspension upgrades that occurred in later years. The roll angle was change by 2009. Manual transmission models got a forged crank and pistons, raising the red line. The rev limit was raised by 700 rpm. The correct horsepower figure was 168.The amenities improved substantially by 2015, when it was retired. Electric mirrors were standard, as was a rear window defroster. Blue tooth capability was added. And yes, you can "pop the boot with the key."

With some mods you can take the Miata to the track and do quite well. The stock model does have a bit of roll but it's intentional to keep the average driver from over driving it. I'll take the Miata over the Z4. I've had three Miatas. A 1996, 1999, and a 2003.

I drive a 320d remapped at the mo which is a good combo of fun and practicality but as someone who spent 7 years on sports bikes only (no car), I think a Z4 would suit me fine. Although, will be aiming at the 6 cylinder variant otherwise... whats the point? Might as well get an MX-5 and a perm. :D Really glad you're enjoying yours. Hope you keep it for many years to come. The deal breaker of this comparison is you will not survive the maintenance costs of a bmw out of warranty. And I have experience with that.

It’s hit and miss I guess. I’ve done over 50,000 miles in just over 2 years in my Z4, and only one thing has ever gone wrong.

Not hard to add multi-function steering wheel or cruise control to a Z4 if it's missing them, did mine. Hardest bit was getting the parts cheaply.

Always being an Mazda fan extremely reliable but had 2 3.0 Z4 reliability could not complain now got the M coupe Z4 2007 and hell the best I've ever bought so yes I'd rather take the z4

Mx5 does have electric adjustable mirrors and they are heated with the same button for the rear screen, my 2008 sport also has ac and auto climate control

Really enjoyed this one Joel i had the exact same mx5 but in grey and loved it especially how easy the manual roof was to use, however I do much prefer my current 3.0L z4 for all the reasons in the video but both great cars 👍🏼

A really good video. I have just bought a NC MX5. But l used to own a Na. Look, there are loads of + and -. But at the end of the day. They all make you happy and thats what life is about. And so many people don't get that in cars. A to B. I jump in mine, and l already am buzzing!

At the storage at the center, the z4 has the cd changer. Without it (because it is not on standard equipment) you can fit 3-4 head and solders. Additionaly the Z4 has storage cabinet under both seats. Behind each head, there is a tiny hanger where you can hang a jacket or your hat.

Recently tried out a Z4 and an NC mx5, as well as a 350Z - went in expecting to hate the miatas lack of power after driving turbo for the longest time - but it's the mazda that came home with me! the car feels like an extension of my body, really confidence inspiring and no doubt will make me a better driver

Great concept for a car enthusiast video. I’ve owned five Miatas, so I’m completely jaded. Obviously, I prefer the looks & features of the MX5 NC. Too many curves on the Z4 for my taste.

Had 2 Mx5's. Would have got another were it not for the rust. Got a z4 5 years ago. No rust. Never needed any repairs except for a horn plug which broke. Fixed with a soldering iron. Mk3 mx5s are rust buckets. Paid £4900 5 years ago for a 2.0 m sport. Worth around £4000 now. So under £200 A year depreciation. 2 year service intervals. Much better looking car inside and out and looks much more expensive. No contest whatsoever. If you want a cheap looking car which will die of rust buy a mk3 mx5

Fred Greg again... You re the new Jeremy Clarkson. Very pro, very interesting. You should write to Top Gear Maybe they will take you in their Team. If they don t you should create your own tv series as Wheelers dealers for example. You can also create a Bmw roadsters club and organise Events or roadtrips to Munich.

Great video! I have a mk1 mx5 NA with a a bolted on hard top and an E86 Z4 coupe (I’m just a coupe kinda guy I guess). Both mine have around 70k on them. My z4 definitely rattles and squeaks more than my mx5, probably because everything that can rattle on the 5 has rusted off! Enjoyed the comparison, all good fun and an interesting way to compare both cars. Looking forward to the next video :-)

This is a prime example of somebody who has judged the MX5 “by the cover” before driving it, and can actually admit somewhat when driving it that it’s fun in its own way. Way cheaper than a Z4 too. The straight line acceleration test was ridiculous, comparing apples to oranges, who did you really reckon was gonna win that one lol.

Definitely hadn’t judged the MX-5 as I owned one before the Z4! I love the MX-5. I think on paper of course the Z4 was going to win the acceleration test, but it’s interesting to see the difference for people who may be considering either of the cars. Thanks for watching!

I'm about to come into a E85 Z4 and am a long term MX5 fan including a former NB and NC and current NA driver. its seriously hard to argue against the NC. It seems to be hated by everyone including miata fans, which just makes it cheaper, and its made from the ford parts bin which means its basically free to run. The Z4 would certainly win in a race, but if you're not trying to win a race the NC is a gem to own and drive.

Both those convertible sports cars are dissimilar to me and they both are a good pair of rivals. A Japanese convertible my dad dreamed about and a German convertible that makes compare to the Miata.

You can have cruise control and they are on the right. I haven’t cruise control, so I also only have controls on the left. But I do have AC. And he also has electrical side mirrors AND heated side mirrors like I do, he only doesn’t know where the buttons are ;)

Quite funny...without the MX-5, the Z4 and 3 would not exist. I've owned the Z4 and LOVED it. I've also owned an MX-5 and loved that too. I did not, however, love how much the Z4 cost to *just* maintain with zero things needing replacement or repair.

@@moart87 you won't regret a z, mine is a 06 3.0 Si and I think it gives decent performance out with the M. Just make sure you get the back box delete whatever one you go for.

Put those cars on a track, the mx5 will be faster on lap times because its light like a sports car should be, Z4 is a sports car looking car and will suffer in the bends

The Z4 has great handling, sure it’s a little heavy for its size but it has perfect weight distribution and makes loads of grip. Have you driven one?

Had a couple of MX-5’s before a Z4 - great cars but nowhere near the BMW in all regards. Some sneaky ‘concessions’ that perhaps shouldn’t have been... Heart says it’s nice to be nice, head (for your channel) says be more savage 🐠 Genuinely enjoy the channel though my friend 🦀

I have an MX-5 2007 2.0, just perform an ECU optimization and the engine is able to give out 180hp, no biggie. Also I have the Mazda OEM eibasch lowering springs on mine, feels like a gocart. Much cheaper than the Z4 but also a lot more fun imho. Leaves extra room for upgrades like a new exhaust etc...!

Joel, you should stop getting in to he trunk of the Z4. On mine, the lock went bad without any warning and it was close to impossible to get it open. It stayed two month's locked, with all inside, till i could figure out a way to fix it. (The trunk release wire was useless)

I've owned both 1st was the Miata mid 90's due to write-off accident, I replaced it with a BMW X3 James Bond edition. Thought I was upgrading but noooo. The MX 5 fun factor wins hands down. Went back to the Miata MX5 in 2007. Best drivers car ever .BMW is better for guys who are more concerned about prestige rather than true driving experience.

@@itsjoel yes I have only on a test drive when I got rid of the z3 . I test drove a new Z4 I didn't think there was any improvement over the Z3 and I didn't like the z4 styling change. Then I test drove the Miata and the feeling was "that's what I've been missing" now there's no going back. I'm getting older and the Miata is reminiscent of cruising on my motorcycle whereas the BMW isn't much different than driving my Mercedes SUV.
