Interesting, Doc. I had a similar experience with the EGO mower and ended up having to switch back to gasoline power. I have a small Bermuda lawn and found that during aggressive growth in the Spring/Summer it wasn't powerful enough to cleanly cut the lawn on the lowest 2 settings. The other downside is what you mentioned... when the grass is wet, it will severely clog and you have to turn it over and clean it out every 1-2 passes. Sad to see the EGO go... LOVED the quiet operation and the compactness of storing on its side. Couldn't justify $2,000+ for a power reel mower, so I bought a Honda rotary, and it's able to maintain the Bermuda grass at the lowest 2 height settings. However, if you have other grass types, especially broadleaf varieties, e.g., St. Augustin, I would wholeheartedly recommend the EGO mower.

as a composter myself its a great sight when its smoking like that, add grassclippings to get it really going.

The only time to disturb the soil is when you are adding something to improve it. Roots in the ground count as an additive if there previously were none so sub surface tilling sounds like a good idea to me to follow up with some seeds. Man doc you think your soils looks crappy you should see the borderline concrete I have here in northern Colorado that the builders added gravel to. I'll be drilling holes in my lawn to backfill with organics and carbon for years before the soil health improves.

A couple thoughts: has this soil been mold board plowed over the years? If so, you can be experiencing what we call a plow layer. Depending on how you plan to use these fields going forward, you may end up needing to subsoil every couple years. Annual ryegrass sown in the fall is known to break up hardpans with roots that can grow up to 3-5 feet deep. It has many other benefits as well. We did this a lot on no-till soils that experienced compaction from heavy farm equipment, grain carts, etc.

Gypsum may help with your potassium issue. The negatively charged sulfer ions may attract the positively charged potassium ions and then leach out. Or at least break up your compaction.

Hey Doc Maybe you can plant some Dikon or a Tillage Radish to help break up that hard pan. It might not be to late where your at to seed some to over winter.
