So I'm a homesteader but work for a large fire department as a hazmat specialist. We do alot of grounding and bonding when we drill and pump off overturned tractor trailers etc. don't hesitate to build a "trench" and lay your rods horizontal, about a foot deep. You're results will be just as good, and you may avoid your rock layer!

This is so helpful. My kids' riding coach passed away last week and gifted my daughter her beloved old lesson pony. My husband is away for work, so I have to install fencing myself so we can bring this pony home (and find him a friend). Thank you for this.

My husband has been ill, so I find myself doing everything on our farm solo. I love to Macgyver projects, but with the electric fencing, I really want to do it right the first time. Thanks to your comprehensive video, I ordered exactly what I need, and I feel very confident that I can install and move fencing from time to time, so the ponies will be away from the apple orchard during the apple drop months. Thank you!

Great video my friend. I bought the 10 mile one for my 2 acres lol and it works great neighborhood dogs do not want no part of my yard no more. Quick tip for anybody that needs to move their ground rod a pair of vise grips, a 2 x 4, rope. What you’re going to do is a seesaw affect. Hook your vice grips to your ground rod, tie the rope around the vice grip and to your 2 x 4 put the 2 x 4 on a log or something off the ground and pull it out doing the seesaw maneuver. Hard to explain texting, but comes out very easy. You folks testing it out on yourselves, one may feel it different from the other because of your shoes. If you had your shoes off, your hair would stand up lol or your shoes wet gives you a bigger shock. Also to make your system last longer, take some clear silicone and run it where the solar panel meets the rim or frame of the plastic surrounding it, rain likes to get into the system and it just helps Keep it dry inside. Peace and God bless.

You can dig a 8 foot x 1 foot ditch and lay the rod in. It is not the depth of the rod, it is the amount of rod in the ground. In underground utility construction we always laid or rods in horizontal. We basically just put them in the ditch.

I’ve used American Farmworks solar chargers several times and I promise you, spend the extra money and go with a Gallagher charger. Much much less headache and they aren’t nearly as temperamental to ground like the AF chargers. The Gallaghers are also way easier to replace the battery when they get old.

Great family time theater, looks like you had fun. Please eliminate the slack on the black ground wire runs, otherwise, it will be a tripping hazard. While you are at it please remove the slack from the charger to the first ground rod for the same reason. On those exposed ground rod ends consider slipping a section of PVC pipe with a cap on it to cover the exposed rod end just like you should cover the top of the T- Post. There are T-Post Caps/Poly Tape Mounts available for your top tape. Yes, I have seen animals impaled on un-capped T-post ends, not pretty. Great video, you were under the watchful eye of a great working dog. He was always on guard.

Loving the video, super good presentation of the process. But at 8:49 how is that an 8 foot post? The panels would have to be 7 feet then, but in the next scene the 5 foot post is the same height as the panel.

@FromScratchRanch Жыл бұрын
Good catch! Not sure why I said 8 footers. The taller ones are actually 6 foot tee posts. I never realized I made that mistake saying they were 8 footers until now. Thanks for watching and catching that.

Just a thought … none of the metal panels are needed to make an electric horse enclosure. It’s rather over kill, especially for these docile horses. I grew up with a dad that ran thousands of cows on electric part of the year in Nebraska where the snow can drift.

Absolutely, depending on how large your yard or field is. If you have an existing fence up and want to add electric to it, super easy and no time at all. I have a split rail fence and I put up my wire around an acre in about 3 hours or less

Which is better the poly wire or poly tape?
@FromScratchRanch
@FromScratchRanch 3 ай бұрын
I do not have any experience with the poly wire, but I did choose tape over the wire as just because of personal preference for how it looks. I like the 2 inch wider tape because it is more visible than the poly wire. I would use the electrified poly wire or any other less obtrusive electrified wire though along the top of an existing non-electrified wire or wood fence to keep the horses from leaning over and damaging the fence.

yes, I agree. I have had a few I have needed to replace over the last 2 years... but it hasn't been that bad, and we get a lot of sun that would make them brittle. Sorry they haven't worked out that well for you.
