It's amazing how covering the joints in the lead lines softens and calms the piece. Unifies it. It suddenly becomes about the glass and the colors. So I have a few questions: Why did you go to always wearing gloves? Is it to avoid toxicity from the lead? Or do they protect your hands jjfrom tiny cuts? Trying to decide if I should use more protective stuff like that--I wear safety glasses and wash my hands a lot but thats about it, for now anyway. I haven't done any actual soldering yet. Also, does the lead came go under the edge of the zinc came, or does it butt up against it?

So , yes, I began wearing gloves when I started working with lead. In the beginning I wasn't wearing them. But I was constantly washing my hands if I needed to leave the studio for anything. So that's when I made the switch to rubber gloves. It does not protect against shards of glass but it definitely helps with some protection, especially from grinding. As far as framing goes, I actually use 1/2" flat H lead came. Since this piece is goes to be wood framed, my strength and support to hold the piece all together will come from cementing the panel and holding it in the wood frame. Zinc would be just as strong but I prefer the look of wood. I like to use a wider, flat came on the edges to create some space for the wood to cover. So, no, there is no zinc on this piece at all. Surprisingly I rarely use zinc. Almost 100% of the time either my panel will be wood framed or it's small enough that U shaped lead with do the trick. Thanks so much for these amazing questions!

it's a beautiful piece! May I ask what surface you're soldering on? Is it just plywood? I'm setting up a workspace in the basement and I wasn't sure if I should use a plywood base, or find one of those soldering mats. Thank you!

I completely agree with you on the oak frames. They are just so bland and characterless.
