A lot of us don't get, and never will get, the positive, enriching, and openly/warmly loving parental relationship we've always pined for - and that unfulfilled desire can lead to life long pain. The healing comes, and it truly does come, when, once your own children arrive, you make the effort and succeed at being for them the kind of parent you wish you'd had.

That seems very judgmental of people. They are who they are, just because they aren't like that perfect TV family doesn't mean they aren't wonderful humans in many subtle ways you may not come to realize till after they are gone, then those thing become very apparent like a bright searchlight you can't believe you did not see all along.
@lakemichigan6598
@lakemichigan6598 5 жыл бұрын
@@spazoq We should all do what we can to keep our judgementality of people to a minimum. To live and let live is, in general, a good way to view the the lives of others. But emotional or physical abuse, belittling, and most other kinds of ill treatment directed by a parent toward a child are easy to spot, especially by the recipient of the abuse as that recipient matures, and should be judged as such. Very few parents are wholly bad. For the vast majority, a childhood filled with abuse 24/7 is very unlikely, but any of it at all is a terrible thing for an innocent child to have to bear. The idea, when it comes to parenting, is to take the things you learned from your parents that were good and apply them to your own child rearing while leaving what you experienced, and deem today, as dysfunctional behind.

@@Mary-tj5qx May I suggest purposely choosing to relate to the people you meet, professional contacts, friends, and loved ones in the ways you wish your parents had related to you has the power of healing too.
@lakemichigan6598
@lakemichigan6598 5 жыл бұрын
@@Mary-tj5qx It's true, I think, most people raise their children similarly to the way they were raised themselves, good, bad, or indifferently. It is, after all, the child rearing experience they're familiar with - and typically, because of that familiarity, most comfortable with too. And yes, as you say, many parents, raised themselves in dysfunction, probably don't have the skills necessary to positively change the course of their generational familial history. But if you're unhappy with how your parents did it, begin to have kids of your own, and care about how they turn out, you owe it to their future happiness to use what you believe was the harmful parental behavior you experienced yourself as examples of what NOT to do and strive with all you've got to do things differently, to do things better, to provide for your own children the most healthy, loving, caring, and disciplined family environment you can. I saw these ideas purposely attempted in my Sister's family - and accomplished with spectacular results.

@itsME, She certainly loves and support her mother, but she spoke clearly about boundaries she had to put for it stop to be suffocating and unhealthy relation. She said also, as she's the only child and her mom had no life partner, all care-expectation were put on a daughter what is utterly unhealthy and toxic for both sides. Normally parent is more or less supportive but the child shouldn't be own mothers (or father's) guardian. Making comments like this you're not helping but making her feel bad about cause toxic relations base on guilt and she said, she already feel guilty (for nothing in fact). I have in my own family examples of similar unhealthy relationships and I can tell you, she loves her mom. But she must also go away and take a breath, cause love isn't about sacrificing own life and being unhappy (at least that's my opinion). You can see super-clear, how upset she was in that video and how much those two can piss off each other, without any bad intention. Such personalities CAN'T live close all the time.

You are strong and brave Liz. I hope this video helps heal many. It gets old always being in charge and the caregiver. Chances are it will only get more taxing as the years pass, but don’t let it bring you down...ever. You are perfect, and this short life is all about the attitudes we choose given our circumstances. Thank you for this raw, real coverage. And bless you.

I confess having a laugh at this video. Ur mums antics and your reaction... Reminds me of a recent trip I did with my father in his motor home. I too shared that notion of wanting that loving close relationship. Barriers moved when I gave up that expectation and accepted our relationship for what it is. I accept him for who he is. Takes so much pressure off. Love your videos 👌🏼

I don’t know how you do/did it. You are a saint. Your mom might be dealing with an autoimmune disease. Labs don’t often show for years. Bacon, cheese, sugar, etc., is not going to help her. But, I know you’re not in control of that. I’m glad you have created boundaries as you must take care of yourself. She’s doing the best she can but you have to look out for yourself. P.S. That Otterbox looks amazing. Going to check it out now.

I don’t know all of your mom’s circumstances, but I do know often doctors are dismissive of patients with complaints the doctors cannot easily diagnosis. And older women are especially looked at as being hypochondriacs, etc. I hope she is able to find relief soon. Bless your heart as the only child. That’s a difficult burden. Balancing your sanity with your desire to care for and connect with your mother. Don’t worry if it seems impossible, you are doing fine.

So true! My intense pain and numbness was brushed off by so many because I was a young woman who looked healthy on the outside. It turns out I had something seriously wrong and it was exactly what I had been begging them to check for. I didn't get early treatment that could have seriously improved my long term prognosis and now I'm permanently disabled at 30. People really need to listen to complaints of pain more. Pain isn't a joke, and it isn't just a symptom, it's a disease that literally shaves years off your life and sadly many people who can't get proper pain relief end up commiting suicide.

Many of us put our parents on a pedestal because of the authority they had over us as children. I’ve been blessed with great parents but many of my friends have not. I’ve seen aging parents act like brats and torture their kids. I’m older than your mom and I’ve had my share of medical issues but I still RV and work a full time job and don’t put a burden on my kids. You have to live your own life and it’s not fair for your mom to put unrealistic expectations on you. Set expectations on what you are willing to do and when you can do it. At 63 she could have another 20 or more years to live and those will likely be your best years to build your own life.

More of Liz's brand: Courageous, authentic transparency. Love. It. Liz, you summed it all up in a word: expectations. I'm fond of saying that they set us up for disappointment while setting others up for failure. Be present in the moment. Accept and love unconditionally. These are the "secrets" to having peace *about* a relationship, even if there isn't peace *in* the relationship. You're the furthest thing from a failure. All you can be is true to yourself. The rest is up to others. Relationships only work when people bring their best selves while encouraging others to do the same. Your video says a lot of what I feel while visiting my mom. She definitely doesn't understand the lifestyle I've chosen and worries *a lot* about her "single-again" baby boy who's a very capable, competent grown man. Believe it, or not, your video buoyed my spirits, so thank you. Thoughts and prayers for your mom, and for your relationship.

When you take people out of their comfort zone, stress levels go up. That stress level seems to go higher in older people and or they don’t handle it as well as they did when they were younger. And yes, it causes them to feel or to be sick. How do I know? I’m almost 65. When my parents were alive, I let them decide what they wanted to do and went with it and my children are doing the same with us. They suggest, we decide. Seems to work better that way. Keeps the stress down for everyone.

Your mom has quirks that you are fully aware. You either accept those quirks (and have patience with them) or don't choose to be around her. ... You knew she was going to get up several times in the night, so why be cranky and aggravated. Either lovingly accept the fact or don't spend time with her. It's your choice. Just like your mom has made choices about her diet. With love ❤ from sunny 🌅 Arizona 🌵

I scrolled down into the comment section to see if I was the only one that thought this as well. Wild by the mile. When our parents get older we have to be as patient as possible. After all when we were young, our parents were extremely patient with us. When the tables turn, we should exericse patient, respect and love. Much of what is lost with the youth today. You should tell your mom you love her back. We only have one mom and one dad and when they pass away we will never have a new set of parents. Cherish them and overlook their crankiness.

I love mom and I have taken 4 week long trips and watching this makes me feel right at home. My mom brings about 15 bags and it takes forever for her to remember what bag she puts things in so we go through all of them. I don't have a van so we travel and I have to load and unload all her many bags every night when we stop.

That was very insightful! I'm on my first journey in my Class C RV. Left 7 Nov 2018 for what was going to be two weeks, well in into my second month now. I plan to take mom and dad on trips, separately because they have been divorced forever and a day. I'm sure each one will bring challenges. Keep up the good work on the videos!
