Does the van drive well in the snow? See it snowed-in at Snowbird, and what you didn’t know a toilet does in the mountains. Winter van safety tips are coming at you! In this video, you will see: What chains I use and how the tires perform in the snow; where to park at the ski resort; and I answer your questions, like - Would I choose another insulation? Does water in the tank freeze? What about condensation?
Snowbird officials stress parking fines are only up to $150 each and most often not enforced.

Muscle spasms are a sign of low electrolytes - magnesium in particular. It absorbs best topically, and you can use magnesium oil as lotion or take epsom salt baths to raise it quickly.

Chains or cables are only meant to travel at a top speed of 30 miles hour. That was your speed in the video. The noise comes from the tire compressing under vehicle load which makes the chains ( cables ) lose causing them to hit the ground in front of the tire and bounce back up into the tire. My sprinter with my Pewag chains on it on clean plowed roads( no snow) sounds like a tank. Just do your best to keep it under 30 miles a hour.

I wouldn’t worry about the cable sound. All chains and stuff make a lot of weird noises it’s just the cables moving around on the tire. Chains and stuff aren’t meant to be for higher speeds

I live in the Northeast and have a 4x4 GMC pickup with BFG tires but also have a 2wd BMW which I have winter & summer wheels & tires. The winter tires are studded snow tires which work well in snow & icy roads. Chains & snow cables are for extreme road conditions with up & down grades which most folks have no business driving in.

Something lots of people don't know,.. without a locker rear axle your van is only one wheel drive. It's an option that can be ordered when purchasing a new vehicle, it's like night and day! Snow tires are made out of a different compound that off road tires can't match. People seem to think those big bad ass tires are the best in snow ...wrong!! ( Check it out! ). You did your insolation perfectly! The V bar chains are the best on especially icey conditions but as said by many others.. you can't drive much faster than 20-25 mph because they will streatch! One last thing ( thank God and I'll shut up) I always keep a buddy heater as a back up and are perfectly safe if you have the proper ventilation! Thanks Liz,. Best to you and be safe! 😊

I believe that would be called "limited slip differentials and axles" in North America not "locker". It's also true of awd vehicles, they are effectively one wheel drive in poor traction situations unless they have limited slip differentials and transfer cases. The big thing about Suburu's was that they limited the slip in their transfer cases so that a minimum of 30% of the torque would still be delivered to the non slipping axle, hence if one wheel slips, the other axle still turns (however unless they have limited slip differentials too then if a second wheel slips on the other axle, you're sol). Basically an AWD without limited slip differentials but with limited slip transfer cases is essentially a two wheel drive. Note that a standard two wheel drive vehicle with limited slip differentials is effectively a two wheel drive in poor traction situations too. 4wd is where you can lock the transfer cases and differentials together so that all the wheels turn at the same rate which is great for poor traction conditions but dangerous on dry pavement, you're also supposed to drive really slow when under 4wd as in 15 mph max slow. It's only with 4wd that there might be something called a "locker" in North America. Some 4wd's only have the ability to lock the transfer cases, indeed this is the most likely 4wd setup, this is safer as you don't have to drive slower and it's probably safe on dry pavement but in this scenario, if a wheel slips on both a less then you have no traction. I don't believe chains are to be used above 15 mph. I remember thinking that really limits their usefullness when I bought chains. Then again I bought them in Canada so I think the warning was to not drive above 20 km/h.

About the cables: The sound is the end of the cables. There's usually some little clips (orange/red) to secure the ends so that they don't slap against the wheel well, but it's nbd if you don't secure them - it's just annoying. I have the same cables and living in Yosemite, I have to use them frequently.

I am a tractor trailer driver & mostly live in my truck. When you put the chains on, lay them longways with the van, behind the rear tires & roll back onto them. The front ones same thing but roll forward. As was said, they are meant for slow speeds, less than 30 mph (you can watch tractor-trailer youtube videos of the installation). They also should not be driven on asphalt, once the snow & ice is gone, remove them. If you have to reinstall them 2 or 3 times during a trip, it sucks but that's the pain we must suffer on bad roads. Again, drive slower with chains & don't go over 30. A great snow removal trick is to use old sheets & cover your window & roof b4 the snowfall. After it's done falling, pull the high end of the sheet towards the front of the van & watch all the snow come off with ease. To protect your wiper blades, b4 it snows, pull them outward, that way they don't stick/freeze to the winshield & protect them better. Make sure all your fluids (DEF, winshield washer, etc.) are sub zero degree rated. Better luck next time! Life is a huge lesson 😊

As below, your chains are for snow not for the road so once you clear the snowline you can take them off. I carry old outdoor gear for putting them on as usually it's wet cold and dirty. So old coat, old pants, old gloves, a head torch is also useful. Also, you can practice putting them in the warm so you have it down before heading up into the mountains. Also carry a shovel to clear the van, exhaust and possibly some tread tracks to put under the wheels to allow the tyres to catch. Dig out the exhaust prior to sleep Merino wool base layers and fleece instead of cotton for clothing and carbon monoxide alarm if running the heater at night. You could also run an extension hose from the heater outlet to somewhere else in the van www.butlertechnik.com/installation-accessories-c63/warm-air-ducting-outlets-accessories-c122

That sound certainly sounded like something from the cables were slapping as someone else mentioned, making sure you have the correct cable size for your tires is very important. I was driving in Incline Village and the roads weren't plowed very well and I would slide a little with 4WD and snow rated tires. Being mindful of your speed is the key.

When you put chains on you have to put them on and then drive about a hundred feet and retighten them again if you're hearing that noise when you drive that's not a good noise that means that you have something loose and if you have any extra chain at all flapping around it could snap your brake line should be careful

Another good video Liz thanks for sharing your experiences. Yes a box of arm & Hammer baking soda in the fridge absorbs odors. So I have a question maybe I misunderstood something else: I think you said going 5 miles an hour you could feel your van slipping. Shortly after that I think you said in one of the snowy conditions you could go 75 mph instead of 80?? What did I misunderstand LOL. When I turn on the news and I see video of a 30 cars pile up accident in the snowstorm, and you see other cars flying by along the highway flying by going 60-70 and I’m thinking no wonder everybody’s crashing a 30 car pile up going so friggin fast in a snowstorm… Duh lol. That comment isn’t directed at you it’s directed towards all those people sliding into each other going 60 in the snowstorm. So when you said I could go just 75 instead of 80 makes me go whaaaa??? 🤣

Fridge Smell Solution - Bag of coffee BEANS. Keep in fridge/freezer when not in use, no more bad smell. Put in container with holes and mark not to use. Will keep fridge smelling like coffee and not musty. And use baking soda to help absorb odors and moisture. Dry out fridge/freezer completely when not in use, essentially when it is thawed and at room temperature.

Once you put on your cables you have to pull forward a few rotations of the tires and then stop and retighten your chains or cables. If your cables are flopping then they are not tight enough and will destroy your wheel wells and fenders. Chains or cables are not designed to be driven at high speeds. 25 to 35 max. If your driving faster then take off the cables. Remember cables or chains for traction only. Remember if your flopping then your cables are to loose and need to be tightened. Also lowering your tire pressure will give you more traction and a winder pattern for grip in the snow.

The noise is from the chain/cable stapping against the body of your vechile. Based on the Manufactures web site, it says "Avoid speeds over 30 mph and use on bare pavement. Traction coils on cross members will fragment and cause cross members to break. Damage could occur to chains, tires and vehicles."As a storage note it says, "After use, clean and spray with an all-purpose lubricant."

Hope your leg feel better soon. Sprinter is the only van that comes from factory with 4 wheel drive its why they have a 14 month waiting list. Its pricey but you'll get back on resale value. Other vans have aftermarket 4x4 options. Doesn't the heater exhaust melt the snow? The EGT should be at least a few hundred degrees. Great job on driving in challenging conditions. Driver and judgement is apart of the equation not just the vehicle/equipment. I'm guessing the driver in the raptor was probably doing something fun. I would too if I had 450 hp.

In my experience growing up in Wyoming, cables only came with small vehicles. They are less beefy and might* not be the best idea for your van. 🤷🏼‍♀️ They are lighter and easier to use as well, but hopefully the guy didn’t suggest them based on this factor. Definitely It sounds like a part of the cable is catching and probably hitting the wheel well (which might take a while to notice any physical damage) or possibly catching and snapping back and hitting the tire or rim. Maybe getting under there if it’s clean, with a headlamp you’d be able to see a small mark forming. Also, In the portion of your video where you’re driving 25mph and getting the sound- the road looks slightly damp but doesn’t look to require chains, or cables... 🤷🏼‍♀️ Good luck!

Never heard of sheep's wool insulation - but sounds like a great solution. I've had gray and black tanks freeze solid so I've had to wait til spring to drain. The fresh water tank has never frozen because it's inside my RV. Water pipes have frozen up and then usually thaw out enough in the afternoon. Better to just use jugs of water during winter since pipes can break. I learned that the hard way.
@johnwang9914

People use wool because they believe they are safer than synthetic materials like polyurethane, polyisocynate (polyiso) and polyethylene during a fire but wool also produces carbon monoxide and cyanide gases when they burn. The trick to avoiding condensation is to have the vapour barriers on the warm humid side of the insulation and have the other side well ventilated to keep the insulation dry. However, with vehicles, you pretty much have to expect that sometimes the outside is the hot humid side and other times the inside is so you need to have vapour barriers on both sides and somehow install the insulation under dry air conditions or stuff silica gel with the stuffing to control the humidity inside the insulation. You can buy bulk silica gel at craft stores and seal them inside small paper envelopes to tuck in with your batting, place them high as humid air rises. As to the inside of the front windshield condensing, you could try putting silica gel in muslin storage bags in your cabin area to reduce the humidity there and vent the cabin when you cook or shower. Waxing your windshield on the inside might reduce the condensation too. I would say put electric heat strips on external tanks and pipes then insulate them over the heat strips, a temperature sensor would be a good idea perhaps in the tank itself so you know when the heat strips need to be turned on. You could also install a block heater into the tank. The DEF is 40% urea and the rest is distilled water so I would imagine keeping the DEF tank warm would be a good idea too (urine is only 4% urea so don't try using urine without first processing it to extract the urea and then mix the urea with distilled water). Urea is only needed to decomposed nitrous oxide back into nitrogen and oxygen and it's sprayed into the exhaust before the catalytic converter. In Europe, you add the DEF when you fill your tank and there would be a separate DEF cap beside your fuel tank cap but the EPA requires all emissions control devices to not require operator interaction hence the DEF is topped off during oil changes and therefore a larger tank is needed. The whole Volkswagen fiasco was that instead of finding room to put in a large DEF tank, they just programmed the computer to only use DEF when the car is being tested for emissions, there was nothing wrong with the engine and really no need for everyone to return the vehicles for refunds (I would've insisted on free oil changes for life and brought them in more frequently for oil changes or just find the cap and top it up myself). You can usually order a diesel engine with an oil pan heater and of course a block heater to keep the coolant warm. The oil pan heater and block heaters may be enough to keep the DEF warm by slightly warming the engine compartment. You can buy electric warming blankets for car batteries but in general, they won't freeze if they are charged; when discharged, the electrolytes is basically water and would freeze. They also sell blankets that you put on the grill of your car so that the diesel engines warm up faster and stays warm longer, they usually have a flap that can be left open for some airflow while you're driving.

John Wang Interesting info. about DEF and Volkswagen. As for wool, the ignition temperature for wool is 600° C, IIRC. While it may give off CO when burned, it's going to take a whole lot of heat for it to catch.

I have no clue why some people are telling you not to worry about that tire chain/cable slapping noise. It's caused by a piece of the cable slapping one of the enter wheel wells. and it will end up damaging it. I'd say it's because the tires are larger than the factory tires, and once you get up to a certain speed the centrifugal force is causing the cable to be slung outward and most likely hitting the plastic fender flairs on the rear of the van. Most likely hitting the fender flair near the bottom in front of the rear tires. I'm not sure about your van, but those fender flairs may be able to be trimmed off where the cable is hitting them. A shop can tell you if they can or not. Or someone that works on lifted vehicles.

When you leave the van for days leave the fridge door open and make sure you’ve left nothing at all but an open box of baking soda in it

Always keep the fridge running since that smell is a pain to get rid of. It happens in regular fridges when they stay off and aren’t left open for a period of time. Idk why but yeah lol

When I bought my Sprinter I was given a notice that I could not use chains because of clearance issues. The knocking issue that you had may be a serious problem. Look into the AutoSock autosock.us/ They are easier to put on.

I'd like to offer some tips/information from a frozen northern Canadian boy. Your choice of tires was a smart one. However they are not suitable for the winter conditions that you use them. I have the same model of tire for my four wheel drive vehicle. Dedicated winter tires are the only safe solution for those winter conditions. With winter tires on my vehicle, it accelerates faster in two wheel drive than if four wheel drive with my KO2's. More importantly it steers and stops dramatically better. As for that mysterious sound, it is caused by the traction cables expanding and contracting due to tension and centrifugal force. For your safety, do not drive at a speed that you can hear that sound, please. I know of too many incidents where tire chains etc. have severed brake lines and jammed wheels. That happens when the tension straps can't hold the cables against the tire. Rubber straps also expand due to centrifugal force.

As for Clearing snow off of a high vehicle I suggest buying as wash broom. It is a car wash brush attached to a handle about 4 feet long that is meant to attach to a garden hose. I bought one to clear the snow off the roof of my Ford E250 4WD van. The brush is soft so it will not damage the paint. Being a normal height guy, 5'6", it made the task possible.

An extendable handle snow roof rake would take care of the snow on top of the car. You really have to drive slower with chains on. I would suggest winter tires with studs. Modern factory studded tires have retracting studs so they don't damage the pavement. Then she could drive at the speeds she's comfortable with without having to take off the chains. About 90% of the winter tires sold in Scandinavian countries are studded tires. Besides she's only using lightweight cables not actual tire chains so she might as well just go with studded tires even though the requirement for those roads are chains or 4wd. One trick to strapping chains on quickly is to use the car jack, lift the wheel up and then put the chains on instead of laying out the chains and driving onto them. You do need to practice putting chains on.

They will avoid that sound, they stay nice and tight. Keep a grubby old jacket around for chain installation, and grab some heavy black rubber gloves.

I was thinking the same thing. She is just about living out of this van. And she knows she is a skier with plans to take it into the mountains. This is a no brainer. And the 4x4 is also useful for off road trips in warm weather as well. My SUV is 4x4, and it’s an absolute beast in the snow. I live in the mountains, and the only times I ever missed work was when the snow was higher than the bumper. If she goes off the road one time or ever has a fender bender, the rise in her insurance rates would pay for the 4x4, not to mention the hospital if she is really hurt, or worse. Again, safety. No brainer. I hope she reads this comment.

7heRedBaron hey there. Yup. We’re both on the same page. I was merely making a suggestion. Many dealerships have a 4x4 day. Anyone can go and actually see their capabilities. You made another good point - the van doesn’t only go to the snow, in summer it’s in the mountains or desert. Essentially by having a van with 4x4, diff lock and low range the van transforms from a “rv” to a “overlander”. You CANNOT put off road tires on a vehicles and think that you can then do wild and wonderful things because you have off road tires. 4x4 would open up so much more to her. From capability to safety in any road /track condition. But besides that. Even if the young lady was camping in the snow or rain and got bogged down in mud, sand or snow, 4x4 would get her out. Not 2x4. Many think of 4x4 as four tires moving together. They do not consider the fact the vehicle can still run in 2 wheel drive and with a push of a button transfer the vehicle to 4 wheel drive and should things get a little more difficult transfer the gearbox to 4 wheel drive low range and should you still get stuck? Then there’s rear diff lock. And then there’s also Centre differential lock. The upgraded suspension and the expensive tires are already on the vehicle. This is turning into a rant. Lol. Have an amazing day. Remember. KEEP CALM AND ENGAGE 4x4. Happy trails.

I think you summed it up well when you said that most don’t realize the value of the 4x4 if they haven’t had one. On the overall cost of that van, $10,000 is money well spent to avoid those chains and getting pulled out of parking spaces.
