Went and hiked around the Sawyer Pond Trail, Sawyer River Trail, and Hancock Notch Trail this weekend. Started over at the Sawyer Pond Trail off the Kanc and used some forest service roads and snow mobile trails so that I didnt have to overlap large sections and I could knock out most of the Sawyer River Trail as well. Very enjoyable weather and an overall pretty relaxing hike and camping.

During the pandemic I was leaving trail and summit names out of many of my videos due to issues with massive overcrowding on the trail, as well as, issues in regards to what I would consider uneducated or irresponsible hiker behavior. The most notable of which was trash, and human waste / toilet paper I was finding directly on, or just off, trail. I kept some of the trail and location names in this video. If you are using this video for planning purposes, please use the trail responsibly and try to follow leave no trace principles. It only takes one person not doing so to ruin it for everyone. If you are a newer hiker please watch this video before heading out on trail: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ms6Uaqhl162tp3U.html Here is an article about the issue with trash and human waste specifically in the Whites www.nhpr.org/post/trouble-trails-forest-service-grapples-crowds-trash-and-human-waste#stream/0 Another article about Max Patch (an iconic part of the Appalachian Trail) and the issues occurring there www.citizen-times.com/story/news/local/2020/09/23/max-patch-residents-campers-creating-safety-hazards-mountain/5858936002/ Here you can learn about leave no trace (LNT) principles lnt.org/why/7-principles/ www.nps.gov/articles/leave-no-trace-seven-principles.htm

Watching your videos always puts me in such a good headspace -- doesn't hurt that your choice of music to pair with the scenery is always so on-point. Ya that group left a fire burning, wood chips, sticks, and random trash inside the shelter. One also decided to carve their name into the floor of it. Spent probably 15 minutes or so watering the fire down and sweeping the shelter out. I feel like everything I read online is noisy on weekends, bliss on weekdays haha

I was out there a few weeks ago to overnight but there was no one at the tent sites and the only other person there was at the shelter. We had talked and he was telling me that there's bear that frequents the area at like 3 am. As there was no one nearby, the shelter is far enough away from the platforms that I didn't feel comfortable being there alone so I packed up and headed home. I will try again next year. If you don't have a free standing tent and you plan on using the tent platforms, there are no hook to use to tie down your tent corners.

There definitely was some evidence of bears around but there is a bear cable you can easily hang your stuff up there. From what I hear it can get quite rowdy there sometimes on weekends. I saw the group of 8-10 that left the shelter a mess on my hike up there. The woman I ran into said they were up most of the night drinking yelling and chopping wood all night. Maybe a place to hit on a non weekend. Luckily I was there late on a Sunday into Monday

My first attempt to get to Sayer Pond was via this trail but I some how missed he river crossing when I read the trail description in the guide book so I went up the Kanc a bit more and found another trail, I don't recall name, I some how turned an out and back into a loop. My 3rd attempt was via the Sawyer river trail, 1.5 mile out an back and really easy. I went back a few weeks later to do the overnighter. I definitely want to do it again, next year, via the Sawyer River Trail so I can make a few trips to and from the car as I want to do some night sky photography and use my telescope.

There is a cross country ski trail that connects to the Sawyer Pond Trail probably about 1/4 mile after the river ford and the parking area is apparently on Bear Notch Road. I am curious if it is before the gated portion as I think it would be really cool to hit this pond for a weekend getaway in the winter. The ease of access from the Sawyer River Road seems to make this a particularly popular weekend spot.

Hey John, I have been actively looking at Subaru Outbacks, Foresters, and Crosstreks. Was actually supposed to view an outback and crosstrek tomorrow. Received word they got an offer for full price and a deposit paid from someone who hadnt even seen the car in person yet. So in short, I am looking, but I also am not going to pay silly prices, or put a deposit on a car I never even saw haha. If I dont find something newish before winter, I may just buy some sort of like high mileage 4x4 to abuse for the winter.

It could certainly be cold but its way to hard to tell until really like up that week. I was up in the Presidentials in the middle of November last year? and it was in the 60s or 70s. But I would keep an eye out the week before on some of the facebook groups maybe to get a better idea of what conditions may look like above treeline. The higher summits forecast is also really helpful too

i use a mix of wmnf maps and the guthook / farout app and occasionally the Garmin Base Camp computer app and just based on my own experiences have gotten comfortable with deciphering what i feel like I can handle mileage and elevation wise. The guthook/farout app does cost money to buy once but lets you "create" your own trip by dropping waypoints on the map and it will give you mileages and elevation / descent of what trip you created. Finding campsites are hit or miss. There have been times I've brought out full gear, planned to camp, and never found a spot so I just either turn around or push through the full trip. Then there are times I didn't think I would find a spot to camp and found several. But finding these types of unlisted camping spots also comes with experience and knowing what to look for within the terrain In short I would just grab some maps, try to be honest with yourself on mileage and elevation you are capable of per day and just make some smaller trips and give it a shot. Keep an eye on trails you could bail out on if you had to and roll with it. Hope that helps
