Solo kayak open water crossing to and circumnavigation of Isle Royale National Park.

Isle Royale and it's rugged archipelago wilderness are located in Lake Superior, 53 miles north of Copper Harbor, Michigan and 20 miles east of Grand Portage, Minnesota. The park is renowned for being a place to disconnect and bask in the sights and sounds of nature. Consisting of 450 islands, 160+ miles of wilderness trails, four lighthouses, sunken shipwrecks and no cars. Once called "Minong" by the Ojibwa, meaning "the good place" it's speculated that the name was rooted in Isle Royale's reputation for its berries, specifically thimbleberries and blueberries. Isle Royale National Park is one of the least visited national parks in the United States and is a remote destination for nature lovers and wilderness-seekers. Join me as I spend ten days kayaking to and then around this amazing island wilderness located in the heart of the crystal clear waters of Lake Superior.

Ahh.. thank you. I think you’re right, it was kind of a hero’s journey for me. Something I had been wanting to do for quite a while but just couldn’t muster up the gumption to get out and do it.

Thanks, yeah I had backpacked the entire island back in the early two thousands and had wanted to do an open water crossing and circumnavigation ever since. It was nice to finally get that accomplished.

Thank you, it is an amazing place. I think somebody has been feeding him, he was way too friendly. I also saw four moose but unfortunately didn’t get them on video.

Wow dude! I went out to isle royale on a friends boat from grand portage this summer and we were very careful about watching weather to make that crossing in a 25’ boat with two motors. I can’t imagine what it must feel like to be out in the middle in a kayak. Truely impressive, we’ll done sir.

@@nemadjihermit are you aware of anyone else trying such a crossing on a kayak? Is it safer on a kayak vs canoe?

I am not aware of anyone else who has ever attempted this crossing and it’s not recommended because of the distance, water temperature and changing weather conditions. I would never even paddle a canoe on Lake Superior let alone attempt this crossing in one.

Excellent trip and video. Do you think it feasible to camp from a hammock on a similar trip around the island?

Thank you. Yes, a hammock is a perfectly reasonable option, lots of campers are using them. I don’t because I prefer to sleep on my stomach and I think for me sleeping on the ground in a tent is a better option.

Thank you very much for the compliment. I paid for parking at the Grand Portage marina, I then spent the first night on the mainland in the vicinity of the Susie islands and made the crossing in the morning.

16 miles in 3 hours is very respectable, especially at 60. I think you would do well with a wing paddle.

Thank you. I use to race and still like to train. I own a wing paddle but choose not to use it.

What a great accomplishment. I know when I kayak my lower back kills me. Ican only imagine 3 hrs to reach Isle Royale.

Thanks, I feel fortunate that even at the ripe old age of 60 my body can still perform as if I was in my 20's.

@nemadjihermit Just turned 60 myself. Been getting in shape to join my brothers rec hockey league. 60-85 range .lost 45 lbs and walk everyday. Your video was inspirational for sure

Very cool. I played hockey in a men’s league back when I was in my thirties. I’ve been thinking about trying to get back into it in a 60 and over league. Good luck to you.

@nemadjihermit Find a league and do it. Once a hockey player, always a hockey player. 🏒 If you ever get down to southeast michigan. You could sub in the redford league.
