As much as I love money, I would highly suggest giving yourself at least 48 hours before any purchase decision and asking yourself “Do I really need this?”. Please note that I am not recommending any of the gear seen in any of my videos. The gear I use is what I have found works best for me at the time period I am using it. I have come to these gear choices through vast levels of trial, error, and experimenting with gear out on trail.
Gear, clothing, footwear, etc. are not one style works for all. Do as much research as you can, try out things in person if able, and make the best informed purchase decision for YOU. Do not buy gear just because it worked for, was showcased by, or recommended by someone on KZfaq

During the pandemic I was leaving trail and summit names out of many of my videos due to issues with massive overcrowding on the trail, as well as, issues in regards to what I would consider uneducated or irresponsible hiker behavior. The most notable of which was trash, and human waste / toilet paper I was finding directly on, or just off, trail. I kept some of the trail and location names in this video.If you are using this video for planning purposes, please use the trail responsibly and try to follow leave no trace principles. It only takes one person not doing so to ruin it for everyone. If you are a newer hiker please watch this video before heading out on trail: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ms6Uaqhl162tp3U.html Here is an article about the issue with trash and human waste specifically in the Whites www.nhpr.org/post/trouble-trails-forest-service-grapples-crowds-trash-and-human-waste#stream/0 Another article about Max Patch (an iconic part of the Appalachian Trail) and the issues occurring there www.citizen-times.com/story/news/local/2020/09/23/max-patch-residents-campers-creating-safety-hazards-mountain/5858936002/ Here you can learn about leave no trace (LNT) principles lnt.org/why/7-principles/ www.nps.gov/articles/leave-no-trace-seven-principles.htm

I have been living and hiking in the White Mountains since 1979. The equipment and materials have improved markedly since. Especially the light-weight breathable gortex fabrics make make this kind of hike & camping tolerable. Also the LED lights are a huge advancement to make camping safer at night with lightweight, long-lasting lights. I remember hiking with double "D" cell flashlights the size of a papertowel rack! (Who remembers these). Unfortunately, the White Mountains are now **MUCH** more crowded and popular than ever. Finding remote quiet experiences like this are getting rare.

Chris, thanks for TWO things! First, I greatly appreciate your sharing which trail and peak you were climbing. It was frustrating previously when you were not letting us know, so as to avoid causing too much traffic on those trails. I never thought your videos, enjoyable as they are, would significantly increase traffic pressure on any particular trails. Second, I greatly appreciate your sharing when the mountain kicks your ass and you need to attenuate your hike a bit. We all need to know this happens and when it's time to turn back due to heat, fatigue, not enough water, etc. I ran out of water hiking down from Mt. Hale to Zealand Falls Hut 2 days ago but fortunately, knew I was only about a mile from fresh water at the hut. About a week ago, when it was over 90 in Boston, I was hiking up the Skyline Trail to Great Blue Hill from the park n ride on 138 and literally had to turn back on that short trail to that short summit. I started to feel a little nauseous from the heat and realized I had better go back. Discretion is the better part of valor, or something like that!

I was just hiking the AT in MD and it was so hot and humid, sweat was dripping off my headsweats cap. And there was virtually no water where I was so it was shelter to shelter for water. The bugs weren't bad though. For me, it wasn't safe hiking with no water. I carried almost 2 liters of water but you go through that in no time when you are sweating. John from MI

Ya that whole PA MD NJ NY stretch gets real dry. I think I drank about 7 liters this day alone. I was stopping at all the major water along the way and drinking too. Wild how much I lose from sweat in weather like this

My last dates I could backpack, I bailed because of weather that was too cold or windy for my gear setup. This weekend was the first good opportunity and it was brutal - thought about doing something more challenging but opted for an easier loop in Monroe State Forest. This video does not make me regret that decision!

Wife and I went through to Franconia Brook by Owls Head and spent the same two days lounging about in the river... perhaps a better deal than hiking Tremont :)

I think the biggest thing is just doing it more and more. The more you do it the more you grow accustom to the bizarre things you hear out there and the nerves kind of chill a bit. Maybe I'll make a video about the subject

I’ve noticed in your videos the tall socks. I only like to hike in shorts, but looking for something to fend off stinging nettle. Are those socks effective against that? If so, are they liner socks? What brand and where to buy? I can’t find them in any stores
@ChrisGoesOutdoors
@ChrisGoesOutdoors 2 жыл бұрын
Not sure if they would work for stinging nettle but possibly. I would think it may get through the socks cuz they are kind of sorts meshy but not positive. I mainly used them as a happy medium instead of pants to try to block out the bugs a bit. I spray everything with permethrin to avoid ticks. I have been trying to find a pair of pants that would work for me but to no avail. I tried the sockwell long socks on the Appalachian Trail and Colorado Trail but the durability was pretty poor. I have been using SB compression socks from Amazon now since the Colorado trail in 2019 and really like them. They are mostly nylon, no wool, so they stink much quicker, but they have been pretty great durability wise and you can get a 3 pair pack for like $14
