Last year I was leaving trail and summit names out of many of my videos due to issues with massive overcrowding caused by the pandemic, as well as, issues in regards to what I would consider uneducated or irresponsible hiker behavior. The most notable of which was trash, and human waste / toilet paper I was finding directly on, or just off, trail. I kept some of the trail and location names in this video.If you are using this video for planning purposes, please use the trail responsibly and try to follow leave no trace principles. It only takes one person not doing so to ruin it for everyone. If you are a newer hiker please watch this video before heading out on trail: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ms6Uaqhl162tp3U.html Here is an article about the issue with trash and human waste specifically in the Whites www.nhpr.org/post/trouble-trails-forest-service-grapples-crowds-trash-and-human-waste#stream/0 Another article about Max Patch (an iconic part of the Appalachian Trail) and the issues occurring there www.citizen-times.com/story/news/local/2020/09/23/max-patch-residents-campers-creating-safety-hazards-mountain/5858936002/ Here you can learn about leave no trace (LNT) principles lnt.org/why/7-principles/ www.nps.gov/articles/leave-no-trace-seven-principles.htm

I was reading a trail running forum and was horrified to see people basically bragging about pooping directly on the trail in the name of setting FKTs. I wonder if this is really a backpacking problem or not.

@ChrisGoesOutdoors
@ChrisGoesOutdoors 3 жыл бұрын
I keep the bug net with me if there is any chance of major bugs. The wind pants are always with me now for every season and do an excellent job at protecting the legs. I believe the net and pants combined weigh like 3oz or so, which for me is a no brainer trade of for the bug protection they offer

The hut I believe is opening soon. They were actually doing stock runs up there when I got there. I went inside to fill up water and they were getting things ready. Ya I have been having problems getting rid of the solplex. I have too much history with the tent. I just actually patched the tent up as the corners were starting to show a lot of wear. I used an entire 5x13 sheet of repair patching to reinforce the corners and cover up a bunch of other tiny little pin holes.

I appreciate that Crag! I am quite fond of the area too. For some reason when I started hiking in the Whites I was drawn to the Carter Range. My conversation with a thru hiker on my way over the Wildcats, heading toward Carter Dome, was one of the major deciding factors of me saying I was going to do it. Also, got a free last minute stay at the Carter hut around that same time. Someone whose group bailed and they had a whole room that they gave me, my GF, and my buddy. Still remember sitting on the porch of the dorm looking up at the stars. Great memories in this area. As well as most all the rest of the Whites too I suppose haha

Hight is great. I probably should have just gone and done it again while I was over there but I had a tentative plan and just stuck with it. I at some point have to go do the other side of the imp, north carter, and carter dome trails so will probably hit hight again then

Great video! Check out the Simms Solar Flex Fishing hoody for a sun hoody with 50 spf. I used it for kayaking and now it’s my go to for any hot weather activity. Keeps you real cool. Better than the OR echo hoody. Best part is treat it with permethrin and you have great bug defense as well. Bought it at Runnings last summer.

I think I tried on one of those simms ones last year. I think REI was carrying them? I could be wrong though haha. I have this one (REI Sahara Shade) but I also have a Patagonia Capilene Cool Daily im going to test out too. Will keep an eye out for the Simms ones

Thanks for posting this! I’ve done that similar loop in the past and forgot how much I liked it. Rainbow Trail was hard to follow in spots 10 years ago from overgrown raspberry bushes. I probably hiked it later in season. I remember fearing a bear was napping under the huge berry bushes with a full tummy.
@ChrisGoesOutdoors
@ChrisGoesOutdoors 3 жыл бұрын
The Rainbow trail definitely had a bit of overgrowth in some areas, and in some the trail is super thin too but overall was pretty easy to follow. Maybe some better maintenance of recent haha. If I had spotted any raspberry bushes I would have been snacking away with the bear 😂

Looked like a nice trip…great calming video 👍 The OR Echo hoodies are nice too…i especially like them during black fly season. Curious if your working on redlining considering all the miles you’ve done in the White Mountains.
@ChrisGoesOutdoors
@ChrisGoesOutdoors 3 жыл бұрын
I recently started filling out the spreadsheet to see where I am at as far as redlining goes and at this point I am working towards it. I have been up to most of the peaks already in one way shape or form so hitting the more obscure stuff has been great and a welcome change of pace. Actually debated(ing) leaving my job and hiking around daily all summer and fall and living out of the van

Love your videos. Curious where your mind wanders as you hike? Are you focused on finding the right shots for these short films or are you solving world problems while you hike as well? You have so many transitions you must hike at least 1.5 times what is documented. Keep them coming.

Im all over the place. I try not to over think the video aspect. If I think it would look cool I just aim for it and roll. I am always looking around while I am out there, taking in everything. I would bet I probably hiked around an extra mile with the footage on this one haha. But my mind is literally all over the place out there. While I was on the AT I had an ongoing list of thoughts I was keeping but I cant for the life of me find it.

Just living vicariously! We were utterly assaulted by the bugs last week/end, not sure if I can hike early June after that experience. Do you hood or bandana up? Spray? (Just not a fan of spray)
@ChrisGoesOutdoors
@ChrisGoesOutdoors 3 жыл бұрын
Bug head net is crucial for me as well as my Enlightened Equipment wind pants. Pants and a long sleeve are a massive help. OFF Deep woods spray is probably the most effective spray I have used though. As long as you are covered completely the spray isnt really necessary

I’ve been thinking about transitioning to a sun hoody as well from the silver ridge lites for trips above treeline. Picked up the patagucci capilene cool hoody, but I was looking at the Sahara one and one from mountain hardwear online. Wish I knew which one was thinner, because I tend to overheat and that would probably be the difference maker for me.
