Күн бұрын

In this episode I visit Bermuda after deciding I need to make critical repairs to the autopilot & refuel midway through my solo trimaran voyage between Antigua and New England.
This week I show a little of the downtown Saint George's area, talk through how to put a whipping on the end of a line with a loop so you can attach it to a messenger line.
If you wait around to the end you'll see the dramatic conclusion to my visit when departing the dock does not go well...
Please consider subscribing - it would be great to surpass 5000 subs with this video!

Chris - recently found your chanel, been working through & loving the back catalogue! Are you doing any training or ocean racing crewing oportunities for the keen but relatively inexperienced in the future?

Hi Chris, great to see these videos of you bringing Spirit back up from Antigua. I also stopped in Bermuda when I took her down to Antigua for the Caribbean 600 race you and I did together with AJ and Viv. I just want to give a sincere shoutout to Steve & Suzanne Hollis of Ocean Sails in St. George's. They are really wonderful people and Steve went way above & beyond in helping me source replacement batteries when the lithium iron phosphates became problematic (the BCU kept shutting everything down and dead-shipping the vessel). Steve also tidied-up the solent batten pockets and bolt-rope with which we had some issues. Anyone needing high quality work on sails and canvass whilst in Bermuda should call Ocean Sails. You might recall me telling you what a fast and furious time my mate Tony & I had sailing between Salem and Bermuda. Top speed was 23 knots and we covered 308nm in a 24 hour period. 560 in 48 hours. After all these years, as Spirit was built in 1990, she is still a fantastic boat to sail shorthanded and never felt out of control at higher speeds. But she is very wet and the saltwater firehose at those speeds made our eyes literally feel like they were bleeding. The little autopilot just couldn't handle the 25-35 kt broad reaching conditions, which was the other consideration (along with the battery problems) that made us want to diverted to St. George's. Thanks for reminding my how much fun we've had on Spirit. I look forward to sailing with you again soon! Cheers, Pete

The response to my casual question has been pretty positive so far! I have to say that would be my dream job- hanging out with sailors and exchanging my knowledge for a tour of their boat and a chat!

I'm immediately sensing that people would like to see more of that- seems like I need to find some folks with boats that want to chat!

My first two trips to Bermuda I spent a total of 3 hours before either sailing out or flying out after sailing in. On the 3rd trip I got to spend a few days enjoying the island and some of the sights. The cave tour is a fun thing to do that I would recommend.

It's the craziest thing- I visited Saint George's literally 12 times before I finally got out of the village and went across to the next beach which features thigh deep water for 100ft out to the reef.. and don't forget all the ex British colonial forts in between! I haven't been to the cave, I hear there's also a beach of coloured glass somewhere?

I would love to see you go and see how cruisers sail , how they set up their boat , their systems and crew training and compare it with your racing experience, is there anything you can learn and is there anything you can teach to cruisers.

I would really like to do this! I'm all about safety & sharing experiences so it would be a Yout Tube dream come true to visit other people's boats and share what I have learned so far, in exchange for a tour and an interview! Anyone up for this?

Hey Chris! I was just watching some of your older videos... i was just wondering about heaving to on a race boat. Or, what to do if you need a flat boat in rough weather???

What kind of questions would you pose? I'm thinking more than just the specifications of the boat right? I think people want to hear the story behind the people as well..

Mate I too am an x outward bound instructor and also a sailor at the other end of the spectrum then you I'm doing up and old 90s race boat for cruising if you ever wanted to make a podcast or a video where you talk to someone with less experience so that I could ask you questions maybe other people wouldn't think about I'd be in

Coming very soon... as you can tell I didn't make it to the GSC start, the price of putting the standing rigging on the Open 60 was 50% higher than expected, due to the tight time constraint and global Kevlar prices because of the Ukraine Conflict. So disappointing. Next major event, is the Newport Bermuda Race, in June. I already have 50% of a crew lined up for the Maxi 85 as part of my on-going pledge to pay back all the sailing events the clients of Spartan Ocean Racing missed out on due to the pandemic.
