I love these travelogues. At 80 years of age, my brain says let's do this; my body says, forget about it; my wallet says you gotta be kidding me. That said, thanks for the ride. Someone needs to provide access to passengers to a recording of what the landscape is all about; one that can be accessed at any time during the trip that gives immediate input to what is passing by; maybe some sort of app.

I live in the USA and this is one of the few rail trips that I really really want to take which wouldn't be utilitarian (not going to see family or friends, but traveling just to take the trip itself). It looks like it more than lives up to everything I've heard about it. The scenery = WOW. Interesting that I don't think of this rail line running parallel to the highways, which it looks like it did through some of Nevada/California. I'd love to drive out west as well, but obviously when you're driving you've got your eyes on the road and you can't appreciate the view like you would from a train. Glad to see that this rail trip seems to live up to everything I've heard about it... can't wait to do it. Thanks! Oh and P.S.: next time you see a Monte Cristo sandwich, get one. If you liked the french toast, you'd love it. It's like a grilled ham and cheese sandwich made on french toast. I put syrup on it and cut it up and eat it with a fork like french toast. Terrifically underrated lunch item.

6:04 prior to 2020, this train had up to ten cars (maybe even more) including the baggage car. Four sleepers (one with crew accommodations, usually with a downstairs door at one end) and three coaches. The superliners are starting to show their age and fewer are worthy of carrying passengers, as they're all from 1978-1996 but overhauls are underway. The California Zephyr route is an amazing one. For the people genuinely confused as to why Amtrak is so expensive: There’s actually a lot of factors at play. I mean A LOT. For one, the US is one of the largest countries on the planet (over 20x the size of Japan over to be exact). So Amtrak isn’t just charging for your trip, they’re charging for operating and maintenance costs of the railway and train system which spans across the entire country. Amtrak also doesn’t own the entire railway system, different parts of the railway systems are owned by different companies and when Amtrak travels on that part of the railway they have to pay whatever company owns that section of the rails. This can be included in your ticket depending on where you’re traveling to or where you’re traveling from. And lastly, train companies in the US base their ticket prices on the local economies. Goods and services are much more expensive in the West and North of the US because of how their economies are handled, things tend to be cheaper in the South and Midwest. Amtrak is still expensive in the South and Midwest of the country, but it’s still a noticeable difference in price.

@@kathleenevans1201 Yes and no. In theory, it is, but they don't receive much regular funding, and have to ask for approval pretty much anytime they need funding. They're also still expected to turn a profit despite their situation, which is another reason behind the ticket costs.

Oh beautiful! I used to visit Denver quite a lot, so the shots there made me homesick, especially when you were wandering downtown around Union Station. And it was fun seeing the Metro Lounge in Union Chicago again; in 2016 I had a Standard Roomette from Pittsburgh-Chicago and Chicago-Dallas, and while they didn't serve lunch, the snacks and the complimentary baggage check (and the showers!) were a lifesaver. THe views weren't NEARLY as stunning as all of those Rockies and deserts shots, though, and the farthest West I got going out of Denver was Rocky Mountain National Park, so it was great to see this.

Holy moly, you came back to the US?! Nani?! At least this time you got to see the Rockies and the Colorado plateau! You know how I first heard about Salt Lake City and Denver? It was from a movie where a guy wanted to destroy Denver... Using a train! Also, next time any of us are at that Emeryville station, Emeryville Public Market across the street with pretty good food.
