"Most Americans don't set foot on greyhound busses or amtrak trains. Which is really kind of a pity; Amtrak isn't the cheapest or fastest way to get where you're going (generally), but if you can afford the time, I personally think the experience is worth it.

And yet, many of us keep getting back on those trains. It’s unfortunate that many of the cars are old and need to be replaced, but I personally would never fly again if Amtrak goes where I need to travel. Also, I have never before seen the Accessible Bedroom given to someone who didn’t need it. You noticed there’s room for a wheelchair? It must have been a sold-out train and it was the only sleeping room or roomette left. The roomettes and bedrooms upstairs have much better views, but I’m told that the lower deck is better for people who suffer from motion sickness. If you make reservations way ahead of time, you can reserve a regular bedroom, and they are all upstairs. Also, the further ahead of time you make reservations, the less expensive the fare is. Sign up for “Amtrak Rewards”; they occasionally have great specials, even BOGO fares. One other thing, let the attendant know of any problems. Really! On one trip, the roomette across from mine had a door problem that the conductor and attendant couldn’t fix. Meanwhile the passengers in the “Family Bedroom”, a much more spacious room, had already gotten off the train and that room was offered to the people in the roomette. They got a more comfortable sleeping room for the remainder of their trip, and this might have been the case for this passenger if he asked (and another room became vacant). For those who can’t, or don’t wish to climb stairs, the attendant will bring your food. Also, the attendant will make up your bed if you ask. I always tip waiters and attendants (although I suppose there might be a rare lazy employee who doesn’t deserve a tip. My sister had that happen one time.)

The sad part is, your room was a wheelchair-accessible room, and likely cost more *because* of that. As a disabled person (non-wheelchair, but I do use a walker) that would be the best room for me but at the same time it's insanely expensive. But that's what it's like for a lot of accessible things like this in the US. There are government requirements for accessibility but the bare minimum is done to adhere to them while charging people that need those facilities extra for them.

@@nicefly1556 a train will never be faster than a plane, and won't even be cheaper at this point. Its copium. The length of Cali itself is already like traversing all of Japan. Lol "designed" for cars. Yep, God engineered the land itself deliberately for cars. It certainly has nothing to do with being the 3rd largest country by land mass
@kawaiidoggo
@kawaiidoggo Жыл бұрын
@@ericmckinley7985 You are wrong on everything. A plane ride itself is relatively short. But in US, most passengers spend an hour to 2 hours in airport for one flight. This is all without getting to final destination. So in simple terms, if you were to traverse from LAX to SF, the total time spent going from LAX and SF would be approximately hour 50 min to 2 hour 50 min. Now let's take HSR being built in California. That line will take 2 hr 40 min for passengers to traverse LA to SF. In simple terms, you aren't really losing any time when you are taking HSR or plane. Even more, a train is more fuel efficient. You cannot electrify airplanes. You can electrify trains. Instead of thousands of cars making countless journey, few train rides will do enough. That's simply too good of a return on fuel output. I think you fail to understand how big countries like China and Japan are. Japan from tip to tip is basically the length of Maine to Florida. Land mass doesn't fucking matter at all when trains, cars, and planes need to travel distances. Japan in length is pretty large. Now let's take a look at China which is the leader of HSR. That fucking country is almost big as US but they developed HSR and most Chinese would take HSR. Look i know you are a fucking fat American who likes their big car, big house, big yard, etc but that's unsustainable. If US keeps living like that, it will only drive itself into debt. Unless you are willing to pay for the entire cost of road you are using, utilities you are using, etc, then US will keep on diving itself into debt. There is a reason why many cities in US are tearing down highways. They destroy economic value in cities. Highways themselves disturb economic exchange. With more walkable cities being planned out and built, a lot of US cities are seeing more revenue growth in those districts. Suburbs are burden to US economies. We only have them because white people didn't want to live with black people anymore. Get your facts straight before spouting nonsense like God engineered the land itself deliberately for cars. Then why is that not the case in China? For fucking thousands of years, China has been fine without cars. Fuck your god and your religion. You are sole reason why US is fucked.

As someone who actually takes the Coast Starlight in economy quite often, allow me to shed some light on what economy is like! 1. If you book a ticket on coach, lower level seating - that is a lie. Lower level is for elderly, disabled, and pregnant - though it’s not clearly listed on the site unless you really look. If your young and look able to climb the stairs, they will move you up. (The one time I was allowed to sit lower level for a part of my trip, due to the train attendant seeing my ankle brace and taking some pity, it was much more roomy and quiet than the upstairs…) 2. They assign you seats when you get there - they can and probably will move you around throughout the trip. Especially if your solo. (Like myself) They do try to provide close together seating for groups, but no promises. 3. Bring earplugs or noise canceling headphones, and an eye mask if you plan to sleep. While they do ask people to remain quit past a certain point, people- just- aren’t. People talking full volume as they pass through to the lounge car at 1 am? More likely than you think. And then there’s the stops - doesn’t matter that you just nodded off, the lights come back on at every station so people can get off. And in some areas it stops a lot. 4. Don’t count on there being an outlet. I’ve only found them in the window seats, and the lounge. If you get stuck in an aisle seat, its up to you if you want to impede your seat mate by stretching a cord across their lap. That is - assuming they aren’t using both outlets for their laptop and phone. Just - don’t take the sleeper train in economy. If you can avoid it, take anything else. Since I usually travel NorCal to Bay Area, I try to take Capitol Corridor when It’s not to late at night. That train is SO MUCH BETTER (usually newer train as well!). Fun fact: a two hour car ride is a three hour train ride. Why not drive then, especially when gas in Cali is usually cheaper than a train ticket? (The usually is very important) the answer is simple - I don’t like driving, I don’t like toll roads, and the circus on California highways is much worse than the circus on Amtrack trains.

I and my wife just rode this train a few times. Once from LA to Seattle and again from Oakland to Seattle. The person making these vids is bang on. The 1980's Superliners are built from aluminum, and are falling apart. Republicans will ensure high speed rail as it exists in Japan will never happen in the US. The Solo Travel gut was apparently in a room, but also demonstrates a roomette. The lower level room he sleeps in is generally reserved for the handicapped or morbidly obese. The real way to go aboard Amtrak is to book early, and book an upper level room. Not only meals, delivered to your room if you like, you get a private shower and toilet, and unlike the lower level, it's not stinky. And in addition, there's enough room to swing a cat, should you happen to have one. A roomette, like the one this guy booked, is ok for one person or two people if one is highly athletic. You absolutely don't want to travel coach. Traveling coach puts you in with the 'great unwashed' and their hyperkinetic screaming offspring, plus you do NOT have access to the dining car. The dining car is reserved for people in sleepers only. The reason the solo traveler paid $1K for his roomette is because he did it at the last minute. $750 would be about right for those wise enough to book early. A full room would go for $1200 up. But what the hell. As Dr. Hunter S. Thompson once said, "Buy a ticket, take the ride!" Train is still the best way to travel, and in a •room•, unless you're solo, in which case a roomette will do. And, if you travel room or roomette having access to the dining car is worth its weight in gold; Amtrak food is very good. Otherwise you're stuck with hot dogs and overpriced booze in the Cafe, which opens erratically.

@@bsr6823 Americans know NOT to expect Amtrak to run on time outside the northeast corridor. Like airlines I have had flights and trains cancelled due to weather and derailment delays. I tell everyone to plan their Amtrak train journey to arrive at your destination a day early, if not sooner. Unlike airlines. On the overnight sleeper Amtrak sleeper trains, there is one train daily, or thrice weekly services. At any connecting city spend a day there and enjoy a layover. Every connecting city is worthy of a day's layover, if not more. Don't fret over late trains, plan accordingly. Fares are dynamic like all of the hospitality industry, the fuller the train. the higher the fare. Book early, and join Amtrak's rewards program, get notifications of special promotions which can save you a lot of money. After all, we are living in the twenty first century...

America is really lacking when it comes to public transport, so the prices are inflated as hard as they are because this sleeper train is considered a novelty to squeeze cash out of tourists more than anything. Same with the overpriced souvenirs. There's plenty of neat things to see and do there, but your only transportation options really are just "dude just drive" or "dude just take a plane."

You also have to consider the size of Japan compared to Canada or the US. Here in Canada, we have about 37 million people nationwide. Anything like Japan has would rarely be utilized to merit the update. We have so far to travel from one side to the other. With night stops, it would take 7-10 days to drive from one side to the other. It's 5 days from Toronto to Vancouver on a train, at $2500pp average, and it is moving most of the time. No one here ever needs to really go very far. The biggest and most profitable stretch here is between Windsor and Montreal, which is a day trip - 10 hours by car. We just do not have the population or demand to warrant a luxury-type train system like Japan.

@@mimiagain for sure. I have even watched some of the videos where it literally only takes a day or so to go from Japan end to end. Living in the US it can sometimes take a day just to get across a single medium sized state. Japan definitely has far less area to cover. However, I am in awe of even Japans everyday public transportation. Everything seems so well maintained and regulated in both buses and commuter trains. Not many major US cities seem to put that much care into their metro transportation systems.
