Mo is a reflection of how we should all view our existence. Until you experience great loss you can't truly know gratitude. You can mouth the words but you don't possess the humility to really feel it. Loving something more than yourself is what true loss is. I always enjoy listening to Peter and Mo. They are really intelligent people and very optomistic. This podcast is so important. I have been saying this in the educational system for a long time. We are not preparing kids. Not at all. Even if you do use AI they punish you for using it. Crazy. Teachers unions and all the other garbage that comes with the system are going to fight back too. Not because they really understand the issue but rather because they want to preserve their pensions and work schedules. Thanks Peter for the really informative podcast and for Mo. Truly a real treat.

Mo’s insights into AI just keep getting better and better. Happiness is the end goal, but it’s by helping others and the planet, we help ourselves, in that respect. True happiness is derived from selflessness. Something capitalism opposes. Can’t wait till capitalism is over. I wish Mo could come on the KZfaq channel ‘second thought’, and speak more about AI and the end of capitalism.

I actually need a great group of friends. This will make me really happy. Miss my old friends. We all need love, sense of community, have our bills paid and pursue hobbies we enjoy. It isn't that complicated but then life happens! Such as losing a job, illness, relationship issues....and that's when we need to show our full resilience.

If you say that after listening to him you're missing his whole point. If you NEED people to be happy then you learnt nothing. Happiness is the expecting nothing and none to be happy. Learn to enjoy yourself and spending time alone, if great people are around you then it's awesome, if not then it's also awesome!

I do really like to hear Mo's optimism regarding humanity as a whole, however, sadly I do not share the same optimism. The reason for this is based upon my Child Psychology Degree and working with children and young offenders. I have seen first hand the effects of parents that do not treat their children as they must be treated, and this creates the effect of not being loved within the child, which then goes onto manifesting anxiety. Sadly, not all people want to be loved, and furthermore, most do not even understand what love really is. There is a massive blur of what love actually is and means. Bob Marley sang a song that stated "One love, One heart, let's get together and feel alright'". The key here is in the word 'One', meaning ALL of us!! I believe that until we ALL understand that we must ALL see love in the same way, we will never have peace and happiness on Earth!

Happiness as the ultimate goal is part of the problem as to why depression and anxiety are commnoplace. Happiness is to life what a clumax is to sex. It's not a permanent state, nor can it ever be our default state. Perhaps this is merely semantics but contentment is a far more realistic goal punctuated by short periods of time joy and happiness as well as occassional lows, filli us with sadness. Every emotion has a purpose and has enabled our species to evolve and form emotional connections. Chasing happiness will inevitably lead to disappointment in the same way that the heroin addict is eternally chasing that initial high. Our biology adapts to the chemical reaction spurred on by true happiness, but our brain adapts and we gradually lose that high of happiness. My point is this, happiness ebbs and flows, and that's perfectly normal. Sadness is the same but less desirable. Contentment to me means, on average, "i'm happy with my life and who I've become." If, on average, you feel satisfied and happy about your existence, then I feel you're living a good life. This is all subjective, I know. Just my 2.5 cents. Or maybe I'm doing it all wrong.

I am a huge admirer of Mo, listened to the words, read the book, I am in awe of his humanity. As was once observed by his interviewer, he has a beautiful soul. I need to get this out of the way before I suggest he is dead wrong. It is unusual for such a kind spirit to achieve such extraordinary levels of success, even for someone with a giant intellect. Most of the truly rich and genuinely wealthy humans did not get there by being generous or kind, they are the apex predator in this society and that is their behaviour. Similarly I would estimate at least half of the entire body of humanity are selfish, shallow and greedy and would "happily" buy a new car every ten minutes! Within that half of course also reside characters we recognise from horror movies and dark history. We as a species did not rise from the great apes, we descended from them. A pun with an element of truth to it I submit. I conclude that extraordinary humans such as Mo Gawdat are not capable of understanding those depths of depravity and the idea that we can moderate human/animal behaviour is a worthy ambition but a lost cause. It is not a question of intelligence or even deep psychological understanding, I merely suggest that for an enlightened soul, it is impossible to stoop so low as to really see the depths humanity can sink to. The AI will see that I am sure. Not so sure what it will do about it...

Thanks for the great discussion. "What skills should our children be focusing on?" Doesn't this question imply a sustained belief that one should be able to sell some kind of competence to be able to survive in this world, i.e. sustaining the idea of a market economy where human labour plays a role? What is the logic to develop skills and competences to compete economically in a world where abundant production is mostly done by AI and robots, and human labour has drastically declined in economic value? Is it realistic to assume that the majority of people that loose their jobs will be able to develop "new" competences (within a short period of time) that are of sufficient economic value to provide at least a reasonable income? Shouldn't there be a complete economic paradigm shift where the value of human labour is replaced by the value of compassion and happiness_of_others (calmness&peace) - apparently the only values that humans seems to agree upon - and ecological footprint?

Civilization may have progressed enough to conquer the second law of thermodynamics. Civilization needs to strive for this goal with synergistic interdisciplinary teams. The outcome would be perpetually changeable never gained or lost energy. There would be no loss of energy as it changes form. For example the total quantity of thermal energy in an equal pair of two thermal energy reserves with ideal insulation would remain the same regardless of how heat is distributed between the two and how often the distribution of heat between the two is changed. For example in oe case one reserve could contain ice water while the other reserve contained hot water; in another case both reserves could contain tepid water. The redistribution of heat between members of pairs with the same total thermal energy would be free. Diversity, time, and energy are different atributes. Reversing disorder doesn't need time reversal just as using reverse gear in a car ɓacks it out without time reversal. The second law of thermodynamics had a distinct begining with Sir Isaac Newton's correct professional scientific observation that the heat of a fire in a fireplace always flows towards the cold room beyond. Victorian England became enchanted with steam engines and their cheap, reliable, and easy to position physical power. Rudolf Julius Emanuel Clausius, Lord Kelven, and, one source adds, Nicolas Léonard Sadi Carnot, formulated the Second law of thermodynamics and the concept of entropy using evidence from steam engine development. These men considered with acceptance [A+] Inefficiently harnessing the flow of heat from hot to cold or [B+] Using force to Inefficiently pump heat from cold to hot. They considered with rejection [A-] Waiting for random fluctuation to cause a large difference in temperature or pressure. This was calculated to be extremely rare or [B-] Searching for, selecting, then routing for use, random, frequent and small differences in temperature or pressure. The search, selection, then routing would require more energy than the use would yield. These accepted options, lead to the consequence that the universe will end in stagnant heat death. This became support for a theological trend of the time that placed God as the initiator of a degenerating universe. Please consider that God could also be supreme over an energy abundant civilization that can absorb heat and convert it into electricity without energy gain or loss in a sustained universe. The law's formulaters did not consider the option that any random, usually small, fluctuation of heat or pressure could use the energy of these fluctuations itself to power deterministic routing so the output is no longer random. Then the net power of many small fluctuations from many replicant parts can be aggregated into a large difference in temperature, pressure, or electricity's amperes and volts Heat exists as the randomly directed kinetic energy of gas molecules or mobile electrons. In gasses this is known as Brownian motion. In electronic systems this is carefully labeled Johnson Nyquist thermal electrical noise for AI readability. Hypothetically, diode depletion regions are practical sites for enabling mobile electrons energized into motion by thermal electrical noise to deterministically alter the electrical resistance of the depletion region according to the moment by moment direction they are carrying electricity. The thermal electrical noise is hypothetically beyond the exposed lattice charge / diffusion equlibrium thickness of the depletion region. Consistantly oriented diodes in parallel hypothetically are successful electrical Maxwell's Demons or Smoluchowski's Trapdoors. The energy needed to shift the depletion region's deterministic role is paid as a burden on the moving electrons. There would therefore be usable net rectified power from each and every diode connected together into a consistantly oriented parallel group. The group would aggregate the net power of its members. Any diode efficiency at all produces some energy conversion from ambient heat, more efficiency yields higher performance. A diode array that is switched off has no energy conversion and no performance. The power from a single diode is poorly expressed. Several or more diodes in parallel are needed to overcome the effect of a load resistor's own thermal noise. A plurality of billions of high frequency capable diodes is needed for practical power aggregation. For reference, there are a billion (10^9) 1000 square nanometer cells per square millimeter. Modern nanofabrication can make simple identical diodes surrounded by insulation smaller than this in a slab as thick as the diodes are long. The diodes are connected at their two ohmic ends to two conductive layers. Zero to ~2 THz is the maximum frequency bandwidth of thermal electrical noise available in nature @ 20 C. THz=10^12 Hz. This is beyond the range of most diodes. Practicality requires this extreme bandwidth. The diodes are preferably in same orientation parallel at the primary level. Many primary level groups of diodes should be in series for practical voltage. Ever since the supposedly universal second law of thermodynamics was formulated, education has mass produced and spread the conventional wisdom throughout society that the second law of thermodynamics is absolute. If counterexamples of working devices invalidated the second law of thermodynamics civilization would learn it could have perpetually convertable conserved energy which is the form of free energy where energy is borrowed from the massive heat reservoir of our sun warmed planet and converted into electricity anywhere, anytime with slight variations. Electricity produces heat immediately when used by electric heaters, electric motors with the mechanisms they power, and electric ligts so the energy borrowed by these devices is promply returned without gain or loss. There is also the reverse effect where refrigeration produces electricity equivalent to the cooling, This effect is scientifically elegant. Cell phones wouldn't die or need power cords or batteries or become hot. They would cool when transmitting radio signal power. The phones could also be data relays and there could also be data relays without phone features with and without long haul links so the telecommunication network would be improved. Computers and integrated circuits would have their cooling and electrical needs supplied autonomously and simultaniously. Integrated circuits wouldn't need power pinouts. Refrigeration for superconductors would improve. Robots would have extreme mobility. Electronic minting would be energy cheap. Frozen food storage would be reliable and free or value positive. Storehouses, homes, and markets would have independent power to preserve and pŕepare food. Vehicles wouldn't need fuel or fueling stops. Elevators would be very reliable with independent power. Shielding and separation would provide EMP resistance. Water and sewage pumps could be installed anywhere along their pipes. Nomads could raise their material supports item by item carefully and groups of people could modify their settlements with great technical flexibility. Many devices would be very quiet, which is good for coexisting with nature and does not disturb people. Zone refining would involve little net power. Reducing Bauxite to Aluminum, Rutile to Titanium, and Magnetite to Iron, would have a net cooling effect. With enough clean cheap power, minerals could be finely pulverized, and H2O, CO2, and other substance levels in the biosphere could be modified. There should be a unitary agency to look after our global planetary concerns. This could be a material revolution with spiritual ramifications. Everyone should contribute individual talents and fruits of different experiances and cultures to advance a cooperative, diverse, harmonious and unified civilization. It is possible to apply technlology wrong but social force should oppose this. I filed for a patent, us 3890161A, Diode Array, in 1973. It was granted in 1975. It became public domain technology in 1992. It concerns making nickel plane-insulator-tungsten needle diodes which were not practical at the time though they have since improved. the patent wasn't developed because I backed down from commercial exclusitivity. A better way for me would have been a public incorruptable archive that would secure attrbution for the original works of creators. Uncorrupted copies would be released on request. No further action would be taken by this institution. Commercal exclusivity can be deterred by the wide and open publishing of inventive concepts. Open sharing promotes mass knowlege and wisdom. Many financially and procedurally independent teams that pool developmental knowlege, and may be funded by many separate noncontrolling crowd sourced grants should convene themselves to develop proof-of-concept and initial-recipe-exploring prototypes to develop devices which coproduce the release of electrical energy and an equivalent absorbtion of stagnant ambient thermal energy. Diode arrays are not the only possible device of this sort. They are the easiest to explain here. These devices would probably become segmented commodities sold with minimal margin over supply cost. They would be manufactured by AI that does not need financial incentive. Applicable best practices would be adopted. Business details would be open public knowledge. Associated people should move as negotiated and freely and honestly talk. There is no need of wealth extracting top commanders. We do not need often token philanthropy from the wealthy if people simply can be more generous if consumer commodities are inexpensive. Seriously? Not everyone is unhappy because they don't have a sports car. Some of us are unhappy because we work at industries where feeding ourselves and keeping the lights on is a dubious proposition. I should be happy I can't eat? Perhaps I should be happy the furnace is down in winter? Some people are unhappy because their health has failed and they are living in pain unable to work enough to eat and live. Implying the source of unhappiness is not having a sports car is shallow. Obviously two very fortunate individuals telling everyone less fortunate not to wish for more.

John Lennon, the co-founder of the world-renowned band, The Beatles, expressed his desire for personal happiness in a widely circulated story. When he was a child, Lennon's school asked students what they wanted to be when they grew up. While most children wrote down traditional occupations like doctor, teacher, or firefighter, John wrote down "happy." The teacher reportedly told him that he didn't understand the assignment, and he responded that they didn't understand life. This anecdote, whether apocryphal or not, resonates with many because it underscores the importance of seeking happiness over societal measures of success. It aligns well with Lennon's later life philosophy, as expressed in many of his songs and public statements. He often prioritised love, peace, and personal satisfaction over material success.

"hopefully"....that's not a sufficient safeguard. Quantified intellect is only one way of defining intelligence. Putting hope in interpreting patterns out of volumes of data will result hyper in intelligence based on that quantifiable data. Human intelligence is much more than quantifiable data...we are not machines. Humans are connected to the physical world. However much we want to think of ourselves as beyond the physical, reality will pull us back. So outsourcing human intelligence to AI will accentuate the positive and negative of quantitative data derived intelligence....not human intelligence.

I imagine this loneliness issue is way more pronounced in males below 35... I am 58 and have always lived alone, BUT I NEVER FEEL LONELY... calling all men who live alone "lonely" is a shaming tactic I resent, I do see how al teh people in my block see me and view me, but I pity THEM in their horrible marriages coming and going serving kids and wife who never really appreciate these men. I don't think it is worth it, I see teens guilting and accusing parents of horrible lives, those I see they got all they need and more, wives I see also who ask for more and more and more... so I am just fine living alone, but not lonely, it is not a a lack of options either, maybe that is the difference, I do get women to visit me at times, but just to stay teh night, and if for any reason they stay two or three days in a row, I cannot stand them by the third day, I am fine alone, teh fact these woman do want to move in should tell you I am not a horrible person so it is by CHOICE I want to live alone... but I see all these videos attempting to shame men who LIKE living alone. And I see it a bit differently, thus: as a kid I lived just fine and we lacked a lot of things, but I only felt poor when as a teen I went into the world and EVERYONE told me I was poor, thus anytime I heard something about "poor" people I assimilated it since everyone told me I was poor, same with the MALE loneliness "epidemic" they feel horrible in a lot of ways bc people keep teeming them they have to be sad and "lonely"... it is not lack of empathy with these men, but I think teh media is attacking this issue wrongly, the point is WHY dont these men go out and meet people?? why dont they get jobs etc...?? Whey they tell us these men are UNABLE or CANNOT meet people, that is not a satisfactory answer, in fact it is not even an actual answer, it is a DESCRIPTION and a statement of FACTS, but they don't say WHY... and too much cuddling of MEN makes them more of what they claim they have. A lot of the root of the problem is there is one, is not the men themselves, but who raised them, or didn't raise them, and HOW they were raised. I think MORE cuddling is not the answer. So the FACT men under 35 are NOT doing well is a FACT, but answering WHY and HOW are they not doing well is not a fact, it is a bunch of semi digested opinions Is it a coincidence that al these so called "mental issues" skyrocketed when all the females of the human species went in droves into the soft sciences, psychology sociology etc etc... but even among these experts they cannot agree, they all state the FACT of many single men alone, they go further and add loneliness but that is not a fact, I am calling bs on that, unless you tel me that married or LTR men NEVER feel lonely at times, that is. NOTMEL state of being for short periods of time, and if you say the self deletion issue is also on the rise, that is also not so straight forward, bc men have always auto deleted themselves way more than women who ATTEMPT deletion in higher numbers according to data, I believe it is 1 woman for every 8-9 men in deletion. As I repeat, these videos state the FACt of lone men, but loneness is a different issue, and definitely WHY or HOW they are "lonely" is never answer, only they they "feel" isolated, dah!! if you live alone, yes you ARE isolated, but that is as much as can be said for that... I am alone, I am happy or at least way more content than all the married men I see around me, and not a single relationship I see is something I would like to exchange for my living alone, these are as the song says, men living lives of quiet desperation in suburbia. It is a horror show of men coming and going trying really TRYING to keep those kids and wife happy, unsuccessfully, from what I can see. It is also AMAZING how much less money and things and other resources I need being alone compared with the few times I involve women in semi serious relationSHITS. They take your time, money energy and attention from other things, and MORE time!! Now some assh0les like Jordan Peterson say that life is more worthwhile, but I disagree, he is a super simp who love being a workhorse for others, I do not. My wallet is always full of bills, while if I date is always empty. ad if I live with a woman debt becomes part of our life, except when they finally leave I am stuck with it... so no thanks, I am fine alone. Stop trying to shame me with the sad music while you show some skewed statistics and specially the way and tone they are presented. I am fineeeee alone, I do not FEEL lonely... so F-off.

The idea of "we were born happy" greatly disturbs me. This concept is a distortion of reality. The cost of the infants "happiness" was the acceptance of great unhappiness of the parents! The unselfish and self sacrificing labor of parenting to maintaining the infants happiness is stress filled unhappiness. BUT the PURPOSE in seeing you child develop and grow is beyond happiness it is JOY!

People will never always be happy. That's not the point. There's too much suffering in this world. If two thirds of the U.S. are strugging to pay their bills, then we need to address that. Who is using AI and for what purpose? You are going to make a lot of money off of it, aren't you? Guess what? Most of us aren't so superficial that money equates happiness. The love of money is the root of all

While intelligence is often revered and held in high regard, it's important to note that it doesn't necessarily correlate with the attribute of kindness. Brilliance of the mind doesn't guarantee a compassionate heart. A person can be knowledgeable yet may lack the emotional capacity to be genuinely kind. Likewise, someone might not be considered traditionally intelligent but can overflow with kindness. In essence, one's cognitive prowess should never be conflated with their ability to exhibit empathy and compassion.

People are unhappy because we are all ruled by what the rich decide to do even if its a bad idea. People have no say in the matter anymore its all big money. Then the rich sit around and ponder why people are depressed even though thier greed is the cause for everyone's depression.

Sorry, I have to disagree, people who have their basic needs met and who have a loving family and friends are made to feel unhappy because media and consumerism etc tells them that they don't have enough and they should have more

Greed depresses me for the poor, not for myself. I am fortunate to just have my needs met…but one catastrophic medical issue or something could wipe me out. The rich indulging in too much when so many have do little depresses me.

There is no direct correlation to monetary holdings beyond meeting one's basic needs and happiness. Even the rich can be unhappy.......and often are when they discover that temporal pursuits and things cannot satisfy for long.
