Here is an idea for perpetual awkwardness in the fim: The parents are divorced due to an affair , but one of the kids is dying and wishes to go to Disneyland as possibly his last vacation, being a kid he doesn't understand the full ramifications of this and asks the parents to come together. They agree to make him happy , but they loathe each other. Then it adds an heir of awkwardness as tensions rise as they try and fail to not ruin the dying child's trip with constant bickering.

To fill in what Tony started before he cut himself off, The Sweatbox is a behind-the-scenes documentary on the rather hellish conditions of the making of The Emperor’s New Groove. Basically, it describes how bad the conditions were, the animators having to work in hot rooms, which is where the title “Sweatbox” comes from, more or less.

I’ve said it once. I’ll say it again. Tony, you and your crew are inspiration to the highest. I’ve been creating content for 8 years on multiple channels and none even compare to your worst stuff. As someone who grew up with more than my fair share of struggles and only having Disneyland (either going to the parks, looking at pictures/books or eventually watching videos on KZfaq) as that one way to truly escape (from tomorrow?) it makes me feel so great to see other people who see these parks as overpriced children’s play lands. You continue to inspire and entertain each time you upload and I am really excited to see what comes next, even though I am eternally grateful for the content you’ve already made.

I think my favorite line in this review, which you never mention, is “I’m not gonna curse the darkness. I am going to turn on a light.” Just, that idea, of not getting angry and irrational like the movie, and instead, staying calm and revealing everything wrong, is so important to everything, both in the review and in reviewing in general. I love it.
@HBarnill

Here’s the thing about Randy Moore’s stance on “fake is bad”. You’ve covered this already, but yes, art is inherently fake. Even The Wire, quite possibly the single most realistic piece of fiction possible, is still ultimately that: fiction. The job of the artist is like all good magicians: you make the audience believe. His own film is a horror fantasy that eschews anything in the real world by having a hug be deadly. Don’t get me wrong, living in escapism isn’t a good idea and it’s nice to have fiction that’s closer to the truth but to utterly dismiss escapism is a bitter, ignorant insult to anyone who enjoys them or those who put all their hard work making them. C. S. Lewis once said that those who insult escapism are only jailers and he couldn’t be more right (thanks Dave, for the quote). I’m not mad at Randy Moore for this. Much like you, I do respect him. There are some really good ideas in here and there are some parts of it that are genuinely competent. If he worked out his execution, he would’ve made a much more meaningful work on the dangers of fake art. Instead, he wounded up being an indie Zack Snyder, pardon the weird comparison. Thank you, Tony. This video is a testament to why I enjoy what you do. You have passion for what you like, enough to mock it and to analyze its core. Keep on doing what you love.

One thing that you didn't do that I love is, when you drop the disc and DVD case in the sand, you don't pan down to it or cut to it laying in the sand. That's a powerful moment, saying that you are done with this movie and done giving it any more credibility.
@TonyGoldmark
@TonyGoldmark 6 жыл бұрын
I'll be honest - we tried to get a shot of it landing on the sand, but the disc was so lightweight the wind kept blowing it out of shot and we could never predict where it would land exactly. We tried for about five minutes, then gave up. And I wasn't interested in a shot of it just laying in the sand. Not enough movement.

My favorite line is this "Escape From Tomorrow is such a turkey, it would mistake itself for an emu if it had a leg to stand on!" It connects to this so damn well. For all its inane conspiracy theroies, it somehow manages to work out perfectly. This movie is so inept that its own logic was used as an insult against it.

A part of me kinda wishes you went with the "Disneyland" song from "Smile" for the ending. Partly cuz the trivia of it having been cowritten by the late great Howard Ashman & sung by Jodi Benson in the original cast. But also I was was in a high school production of "Smile" nearly (holy crap!) 20 years ago, so I have some modicum of nostalgia to it, even if it was kind of a mid musical. That said, though I still like the ending song you went with instead. Really illustrates the themes this film failed to effectively convey.

I can think of so many ways for this to work much better. For example, all 4 family members could see the weird stuff and Small World could push them over the edge. Then, they go to get a refund, they get it and are offered a ride back to their hotel. They get in and are trapped. The driver smiles evilly and they drive away to make room for the next family, their screaming sounding like cheering to the outside. "I sure hope we have as much fun as they did." the husband says. The driver smiles evilly. "I'm sure you will."

So I read Randy Moore’s bio on Wikipedia and it seems like he had unresolved issues with his Dad. And he seems to associate those issues with Disney because of the memories they sparked. and I even though I’ve only seen your review of the film, ( and honestly the footage you showed was almost too much for me) is it fair to say that maybe this could have been told from the point of view from the son? The Dad favors the sister, objectifies women, to a point where he fights with the mother, and is punished for it in horrible ways? As if the son is punishing him? And as a side effect Disney is vilified as well because it brought so much misery to this little boy? Only in the end the Dad is reborn into a new family while his old one mourns his lost? Just a thought...because I’m not convinced Randy thought about it that hard either. Speaking of movies that are shot at Disneyland have you ever seen the Universal movie called Forty Pounds of Trouble starring Tony Curtis? I found it in Walmart and it was literally advertised on the front as “shot at Disneyland!” Yeah the movie is really a remake of ‘Little Miss Marker’ and not a good one, but the climax does take place at Disneyland ( filmed with permission) and it’s just really neat to see vintage Disneyland .

Here are a couple of notes. That thing you mentioned with all corporations being evil is probably why we need government regulations. Specifically, regulations to make sure that workers (particularly VFX workers) can afford food and shelter, raising taxes to get rich people to pay their fair share, and ones that make the internet a utility so Cable/Internet companies can't throttle down small businesses and ordinary people. Don't diss Target. Target once sponsored Chip Ganassi race cars. He's one of the very few auto racing successes from Western Pennsylvania and I will almost always cheer for hometown heroes! Why couldn't Jim try to kiss his wife on Snow White's Scary Adventures? They could've nixed that Winnie the Pooh scene entirely. I had this idea to make Escape from Tomorrow an animated musical to make it look like a stereotypical Disney movie. If that was the case, Jim would talk to the French while he was with his son. The two would launch into a French Waltz musical number about globalization declaring their love for Disney while saying something like "Who cares what France has made?" Why was this Disney park not closed due to Cat Flu? It's a good thing that Escape from Tomorrow was made in 2013 because if it was made now, the SJWs would try to cancel this movie over the use of sombreros by white people. This would give it lots of attention in the process. I can't think of anything else to say right now.
@TonyGoldmark
@TonyGoldmark 3 жыл бұрын
I assure you, no one would give nearly enough of a shit about white people wearing sombreros in a bad indie movie. Please watch something other than right-wing grifters, they want you angry at an imaginary boogeyman like "SJWs" because your anger makes you easier to manipulate and control. Don't buy into it.

That's interesting, because I wasn't really going for a juxtaposition of any kind there. But that's the great thing about an ending like this, it's open to interpretation.

I know every corporation is evil, but disney is unique in the way it has a literal, physical place you can go to and see the facade. I love Disney parks but there is something nefarious about the capitalist hellscape that is genie plus and outrageous food prices and merchandise. The problem with escape from tomorrow is that it doesn't appreciate any of the hearts and souls of artists who made the parks so appealing in the first place

Well said. it can be okay to like the art and artists who make something, and express anger at the unchecked capitalistic misery that the company leadership can provide.

I feel bad for Roy. I'm sure he's been in some decent films, but there's at least one other atrocity he's had to be in. You wanna know what it is? Creepshow 3! What a piece of literal shit that was. It pretty much ate the Creepshow legacy and turned it into waste. And it soiled Roy's legacy even further.

This was amazing, thank you. And I wanted to say that this review made me realize about the nature of art itself (yes really). If you make anything, you have to if not a respect at least an outstanding of your audience. Randy Moore neither an outstanding of what audience this was for (which is why this film is so hard to understand) or a respect for his audience (your all are lemming, so buy my shit!).
