When parts of a recorded track are too loud, the compressor effect can neatly bring down the loud parts without affecting the softer parts. This video shows how this works and gives some tips on the settings to use.

OMG THANK YOU! I've been trying to fix my audio for old videos I recorded since at the time I didn't separate my audio from my main recording so my voice was too quiet and would be overpowered by the other sounds in the clips. Now it's much better and I can finally finish this video I'm currently working on for my chanel. Thank you again
@WellBeSerious123 жыл бұрын
What most people don't realize is that you have to keep as much of the audio the same maximum level, as much as possible, rather than approximations. Always write down/remember the maximum level of peaks. Do the same with typical parts. Amplify non-peaked and peaked parts separately. EXPERIMENT with settings! USE Preview to analyze/observe each setting level! Each audio is different, in each part! Deal with Amplify before Compressor. Only use Compressor if the audio is too sporadic/out-of-control. Don't forget to try various tools to remove noise if present (like Noise Reduction, look up how to use). And only use Normalize as the final step, before lastly exporting to a lossless format.

Man, Thank you sooo much. I've been watching a really long KZfaq gaming series and the KZfaqr has the in game volume really quiet while he leaves his mic volume to the point of clipping (probably intentional for "effect") It gets really annoying and this tutorial has really helped! Now the in game volume is similar to his voice! (except for when his talking which you wouldn't be able to hear any sound from the game anyway).

In my recording I transition from a clean quiet guitar to a louder distorted guitar. But after bouncing the quiet part is a little louder than the distorted part on a speaker. It sounded fine when I was mixing. I want it to sort of explode into loudness but the quiet part just keeps getting louder and the more intense part keeps on level or just below it.

Hello Phil, This is great finding you here. HAPPY NEW YEAR. Thanks for your continuing work on Librvox. I hope you can help me with an Audacity problem. I have quite a number of Audio Books on Cassette tape. I've converted a few of them to digital. The problem is the tapes are very old and stretched, so the digitized recording changes. What happens is the narrators voice sounds as if he is moving away from the mike then getting closer. Or perhaps simply moving his head away from the mike. I have your EMail from when we discussed some of your Librivox work so I could send you a minute or two of recording so you can hear the problem. Thanks
@cajun54546 жыл бұрын
Sure Tom. Nice to hear from you too. Send 'em along and I will see what can be done. I'm no expert but what your describe is a fluctuation in pitch caused by the tape stretching; have no idea what to do right now but will listen.

Is there some indication that I'm just not seeing? I'm below a beginner at all this, so I'm still trying to claw my way through basic concepts and terms. Thank you :-)
@cajun54546 жыл бұрын
Hang in there, it sounds confusing ... well, actually it IS confusing but not too complex really. First I recommend this very basic video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jZqBo6di26eum40.html Audacity for the Completely BEwildered (or someting like that). next Basic Editing kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jZ9-qLamvL_Fh5s.html. OK< the 'negative 20'. Sound is measured in decibles; no sound is a flat track, very loud sound has those big peaks or spikes going up and down. I just estimated that -20 was the height of that spot on the track. But just ignore that for now and focus on learning what compressor does; the rest will come later. Have fun and ask lots of questions.

My question is in comparing the Compressor tool and the Normalize tool (or is it the Loudness Normalization tool, that would be comparable?) As far as I understand, the Compressor is best used when most of the audio is an even volume, but the occasional spikes need a little "squooshing down" so they can match; while the Normalizer is best used when the volume is all over the place, so the spikes are squooshed and the whispers are amplified simultaneously? Or is it just a matter of preference?
@cajun54543 жыл бұрын
You are correct about Compressor tool being best used to 'squoosh' down (love your technical terms) some or all of the high peaks that might keep us from amplifying that track. Spikes will do that to us. Normalization is really an amplification tool that lets you make the track louder up to the limit you set. I'm not an expert. I use compressor frequently and Normaliztion never. The help tool inside Audacity will lead you to much better explanations I promise. Are we having fun yet?
