Yeah axolotls don’t really want or need much in their tank in terms of like decor, but they do still need filters and stuff for taking care of the tank and some hides! They don’t need much, but it’s not just like…. NOTHING. They still have SOME things they need!

If I’m speaking or past experience axolotl‘s seem to eat any kind of gravel or sand and choke on it. the only thing you can really use as mud or a blank surface. Though there should be good hiding places for that poor thing.

When I was looking into adopting an Axolotl years ago, I learned a lot of people in the community around them care about them, but many go to some extremes for both convenience and safety. I actually had a lady refuse to sell me her Axolotl she was trying to rehome because I didn't want him in an empty tank. I think he had a hide and a backdrop (outside on the backing) and that was it. Basically their logic/beliefs: 1. Their skin is sensitive and fragile, and they will cut or otherwise harm themselves on almost any decor. 2. They'll swallow rocks or sand unless they're significantly large enough to not fit in their mouth. (Also clean water is important, and en empty tank is easier to clean 🙃). I believe some of this is partial truths and genuine worries, while the rest is an excuse not to have to do more work and research. It was a very odd bunch I stumbled into. But at the end of the day, keep your Axolotls safe from rough edges and choking hazards, but also keep them enriched.

ok I have a story abt a bluegill. my friend and I were walking back to my house one day and some dude, no lie, THREW A LIVE FUCKING BLUEGILL out his car window at us. we ran that little guy all the way (nearly a quarter mile) back to my house. got him in a temporary tank and then set up a bigger one. he had been hurt pretty bad cuz he was coughing stuff up and had a large gash in his side. despite this, he lived nearly 2 years in the 70 gallon we set up for him. I feel like under different circumstances (like maybe not being thrown out of a moving car) he would have lived a much longer life cuz he was a fighter. we named him gilbert. rip buddy

I have African dwarf frogs. Ideally, they should be in at least a 3 gallon tank. They’re ideal candidates for a planted nano tank because they’re weak swimmers and have poor eyesight. That doesn’t mean you can shove them into a tiny tank, though. They still need enough room that the water doesn’t get full of poop.

In regards to the bluegill in the tank, I bet it was the Googan Squad that encouraged them to do that. They did that. They had a fairly large tank they put some bluegills and two largemouth bass in. The bass did not survive, of course. I don't watch em anymore so idk if they still have the tank or not. They're blowing up in the fishing industry, so it wouldn't surprise me if they've upgraded to a much larger tank and put a GT in it or some shit.

There was a Scotch whisky "aged" in an ex-herring cask, that they released as "Fishky". It apparently tasted like ass, what a surprise.

Oscars mess with me. Like, not the fish itself, but the fact that someone went "I'm just gonna call this fish a common male first name" and the english language just collectively accepted that. Like, at that point you might as well name fish species Bill or Larry or Frank. All I know is, in my language they're called Pfauenaugenbuntbarsch which is a very complicated looking word but it really just means Peacock-eye Cichlid because their pattern can look simular to the eyespots on a peacocks tail feathers.

I agree with the comments in the twitch chat that New Zealand has better laws protecting aquarium fish. Bowls are outright banned in the country. I'm also pretty sure most shops won't sell you a fish unless you can prove you have an aquarium at home.

In Australia, we have very strict laws around wild fish and other Mr sea animals, though I don’t know if it’s as strict with the fish in captivity

My family had a goldfish named Nessy it lived for nearly ten years before it died we kept it in a rain water barrel almost the whole time it survived - 20 degree cold snaps in Minnesota the thing grew massive overtime before I died of natural causes

Empty tanks are actually best kept in empty enclosures. They're basically a failure in evolution and theyre so fragile any super rough edges or any rocks will hurt or potentially kill them. Remember they live in damp caves and swamps.

aquarium shop here does not give fish to anyone who´s going to keep them in anything but a proper aquarium with filter (or a pond ofc) sometimes shops say it´s forbidden by law, but there is no such law to speak of , tho there should be.

Our animal protection laws are not perfect by any means, but you would not be allowed to sell fish in Vodka-bottles in Germany... I suspect, there could be people who do it anyways on etsy or something...

I got into a fight with a girl who insisted her betta fish in an unheated, unfiltered, critter carrier was perfectly happy and healthy and her evidence was that he made a bubble nest. That's not being happy, that's a fish acting out on its biological desire to mate. People need to stop spreading this myth because it's making people think bettas living a tortured existence in horrendous conditions are perfectly happy that way.
