These videos are meant to inspire other DIYers. Working on cars can be dangerous, even life threatening, if the proper cautionary measurements aren't taken. You also run the risk of damaging your vehicle and or voiding your warranty. If for any reason you feel like the job is too big to handle, I would suggest consulting with a professional mechanic.

Hey Matt, love the video series as I got a 1.8 Cruze as well and thinking about a turbo as well. Mad props and keep it up! I have a feeling it's your catch can setup. There's excess oil that is coming out of the valve cover / PCV. It's meant for pressure release with vaporized oil. However, your current setup puts that air right back into the beginning of the intake. Try sending the catch can exit to somewhere further downstream like after the BOV.

You may need to look at your oil drain line, 1 its too small, 2 minimum an-12 but ideally larger ID the better. I also noticed the drain tap you made points upward into the pan? it may or may not cause some backing up to the turbo. Garrett says for their turbos an-16 is adequate for flow.

@@cmattdabrat I thought that oil return needed decent size, lots of kits sold for my cars are an-10 however the factory return line for my car is id= an-12 so I had a buddy contact garret and ask about mid size journal bearing turbo return lines and the engineer for Garrett said a -16an was recommended and no smaller than a -12 an. If turbo seals take a hit of too much oil pressure say at wot they can blow out and start pushing oil into the intake side. To reduce the likely hood of pressure build up you need more outlet flow for the turbo and in some cases restrictor for oil pressure. We want volume lots of it, but only up to certain pressures, too high psi can cause bearing failure. turbolabofamerica.com/category/turbo-blowing-oil/

@@CorruptInfinityOfficial Ian's take from turbo labs is what engineers have brought up, if your outlet flow dips below inlet flow you blow oil into the intake. You want as MUCH flow as possible especially under WOT for cooling and for bearing function, but more for cooling. Oil coming out of the turbo is foamed up. You can run a small ID oil drain and it will work, you are just doing a disservice to the bearings longevity. After pouring over specs I decided to keep the factory oil drain on my 16g, run no restrictor and keep my water cooling lines through the turbo. BONUS my car heats up faster in winter.

One indicator of a major issue is your boost/vac gauge. I noticed when you first installed it the gauge was slow to respond. When you come off engine braking the gauge should go to zero immediately, yet it doesn’t. It’s also slow to respond going into boost. This makes me question whether there’s a kink in the line. Additionally when you only see 10” Hg at idle you have a major problem. That says the engine can’t build vacuum properly which indicates a cracked piston/broken ring at the very least. Your boost gauge is a valuable tool in monitoring the health of your engine. I also noticed your oil drain is angled towards the ground, that is absolutely suboptimal. You should angle it up. The way it is now it has to overcome gravity and can cause oil to back up into the line. Things to consider. - Guy who built cars for a living before he started tuning for a living.

@cmattdabrat
@cmattdabrat 3 жыл бұрын
The turbo is fine. Only issue was not setting up the PCV properly, so the cold side of the turbo was ingesting oil and time boost cam on. Oil built up in the intake during one drive, and I limped it home because it was misfiring bad. I was logging the drive and it was constantly under boost, and pulling 10+ degrees of timing. At that point I had to put it apart and make sure the internals were okay. They were. Then that's when the rabbit hole started. "While the head is off, why not port it? While the pistons are out, why not get forged pistons, bigger rods.. while pistons are being made, why not have the cams reground, etc."

The oil feed kit was a separate purchase. If you look down into the oil feed, it has a restrictor built in. With journal bearing turbos, you want as much oil in, and out as possible.The issue here is the PCV system. In a nutshell, I was boosting the crankcase causing oil to blow into the intake in front of the turbo. Oil feed and drain was fine. I drove it 2k miles tuning. It wasn't until I started getting into boost that the oil issue with the PCV happened. A one way check valve would have solved this issue. However, I decided 8lbs of boost wasn't enough, so I'm currently doing a full build. Forged pistons, beefier rods, cams, springs, larger turbo. @@ichoozjc - Back in the day, my buddy purchased a non-turbo 300Z and tried to turn it into a turbo Z. The results were disastrous. I remember him saying that he thought his engine was the same as the factory turbo engine, minus the turbos of course. But it turns out the engines are very different and his non-turbo engine needed to be built to handle boost. Even the rods needed to be upgraded because the turbo engine rods were much more robust than what he had in his engine.

@@Japplesnap Many engines can handle a little boost. What was your buddy running? I have a na impala engine I supercharged and run 14-15 psi. Been solid for 6 years. Rods can handle moderate boost usually, but if you have a crap tune on it and get bad knock from too much timing or the wrong fuel then you're gonna chip pistons and bend rods. You just have to be smart about it.

It handled it just fine on the 8psi waste gate. I definitely studied up. Watched all of Goat Rope Garages videos, asked plenty of questions, hit up the HP Tuners forums. At some point, you gotta get out of the books, do some hands on tuning and learn from mistakes. I've definitely learned about more since then. Besides, the amount of enthusiasm you get from tuners when you say, "I need a tune for my 1.8 chevy cruze", isn't very high. lol Besides. I'm enjoying the learning process.

Id rather you called it a Ebay turbo cause it sounds like its a failed Chevy problem. But im enjoying your project and that you don't call it a buil and only add on a cold air pipe. Your on it is there a video of a good power run?
@cmattdabrat
@cmattdabrat 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Don! Not yet. I'm currently building up the engine to take as much power as I can throw at it safely. During this stage of the build, I was just going to install a turbo, run 8psi of boost and call it a day, but as you see I overlooked the PCV setup. So it had to come apart. Boost sure is addictive. I'll get some power runs, and drag times in the future once it's all finished.

Currently accepting Garrett GT35s. Nah. These days, the chinese turbos are just as good. Take a look at some comparison videos vs a real Garrett. It's not bad seals. Look up Tim's Turbos on YT. Hell, you can even run it without seals, and no leaks will happen, unless you're not getting proper drainage. That's not the case here. What you're looking at is my lack of knowledge at the time of setting up the PCV properly. The PCV goes from the cam cover straight to the back of the throttle body. I was under the impression the stock PCV would close like a one way check valve, which isn't the case. Therefor it was boosting the crankcase, and sending oil through the cold side. This was a $20 fix with a one way check valve. But I'm glad I'm going to the extent of tearing the engine part to get a better understanding of how it ticks, because this next round, it'll be putting down enough power to make some muscle cars look funny. I'd love it if you stuck around to see the results and the longevity of these "fake turbos".
