I think most girls’ issue with shrinkage is cause they want their length to show. ☺️ My hair thrives with heavy butters and oils. Layering helps weigh my strands, keeps friction and knots in check, and helps keep my hair stretched via twists and plaits. Deanna East’s products are amazing!! Her Coils Curl cream is a staple of mine since Dec 2023. It’s plant based so free of unnecessary chemicals, other than the minimum needed to preserve them. A good way to seal your ends is with Shea butter, flaxseed gel, Deanna’s end sealant, and her original concoction with beeswax, castor oil and a few other ingredients. But yeah, finding out what works for you is key. I only heat stretch now once a year to trim my ends. I’m all about the plaits to stretch, and wrapping my plaits and twists at night…game changer! Love your content Ashling! 🥰💕 And your hair is growing, I love it!!

I was wondering if you could do a video on having fine natural hair. It was one of the main reasons I clicked on your channel to begin with. I saw that you had fine hair strands like me. Hair density/thickness is another reason many Black women do not like their hair. I remember being confused growing up because I was constantly being told all Black people have thick voluminous hair only to have a see-through afro that made me feel like there was something wrong internally with me. Don’t get me started on all the “only white people have thin hair!” jokes that many so-called “woke” people like to say. Put some respect on us fine haired naturals! Ironically, I find using “white people shampoos” and getting hair tips from fine haired white women helps me more than listening to popular natural hair youtubers because they tend to have coarse hair and do not understand the complex issues that come with having fine afro-textured hair. We’re sort of like our own lone wolf group that is caught in between two worlds. We may share a hair texture with other Black people but we also share a similar hair density with nonBlack people. It’s a weird experience.

I also have fine natural hair (4A/4B medium density) and I hate when people suggest products to me to "thicken" up my hair; not realizing that the diameter of my hair strands and my density is GENETIC. No product will enlargen my individual strands or add more follicles to my scalp lol and there's nothing wrong with fine haired naturals. We're definitely SIGNIFICANTLY invisible in almost every natural hair space; not to mention, most black people don't seem to understand that having fine hair has nothing to do with texture and rarely understand the difference between coarse, medium, and fine. I'm sitting here wearing my scalpy mini braids with large sections relating to you! ❤️

I feel you! It took me at least half a decade to figure out why my twists were anemic, my twist outs had parts showing (or lacked definition due to too much separation in an attempt to get volume), my afros were see-through, and my silk presses were flat. I don't have hair that would look visually impressive in updos or half-up, half-down styles, and the braids with added hair that I loved so much growing up broke my hair off. Having natural hair was pretty disappointing until I figured out that I have fine and low-density hair, and adjusted my expectations based on that.

Omg thank you for this! I’m from the US and I’ve felt the same way about the Afro, it’s simply one of the many styles that our versatile hair can do. It’s not the absolute epitome of being natural. I’ve heard people saying stretching and wearing braids aren’t natural and it’s strange to me. I think they are very beautiful Afro centric styles, they help our hair thrive, and they’ve been worn by people of African decent for centuries. I’ve been natural since 2011 and my hair has never thrived like it has when I keep it stretched. Less tangled, matting, knots, breakage. But when I first went natural and started trying braid outs and Afro puff, I had more breakage and damage than I ever had in my life, even with relaxers and silk presses.

I did so much, bought so much only to have the best results with water and grease. I have used the same method that you do for @10yrs or so. Also, that first image of the statute can you provide more details on it?

The sculpture is courtesy of the talented sculptor Mark Newman -- and yes, it's stunning! He's done a variety of subjects but the ones he did of African women are so beautiful. I'll try to include more of his sculptures in the future 😊

Do I have the time and energy to fight tangles or not? That's what helps me determine if I'll let my hair fully shrink. (Even an afro usually isn't fully shrunken, since we often use heat or a pick to elongate and shape it.) Braids (with my own hair) are a go-to style for me. My shrinkage is so strong that a braid that started out at upper MBL when wet will just about sit on my shoulders when fully dry, but despite that, they stretch my hair just enough to keep my ends from knotting up. Shrinkage does allow me to create faux hawks and huge looking buns with minimal effort, so I'll take it. 😊

I recently discovered the best oil sealant for my hair: Moroccan Oil. Yes! The one in the blue bottle. The one that smells good. The one is golden in color. Can't believe that I just tried it on a whim and voila! It is the BEST sealant for my fine, 4bc strands. I apply it to damp hair. I hope this helps someone.

What non harsh shampoo can i use? And what heavy sealant can i use , i also has similar issues with oil causing so many single strand knots. My hair gets so easily tangled and i have fine strands. Im based in the UK too.
