Great reaction. The whole record this is off, as well as the one preceding it (Perfect From Now On), are arguably two of the best rock records of the 90s.

Doug Martsch, the singer of Built to Spill, was in the semi-successful 90's band Treepeople which consisted of ex-members of a Boise Idaho hardcore punk band called State of Confusion, and Doug who played in a punk band called Farm Days out of Twin Falls Idaho. Martsch has stated, though, that he was influenced heavily by Dinosaur Jr.

Same when I lived in NYC, do you ever bomb the hill northside near the skating rink in Central Park?

You should definitely react to their album "Perfect From Now On". One of the best indie records of the 90s. (RYM 4.01/5 Pitchfork 9.2)

But you should totally check out the Green Mind album by Dinosaur, Jr (which is actually just J Mascis playing all the instruments) and if you want a deep dive, also check out Sebadoh’s Bake Sale album. Lou Barlow of Sebadoh was part of original Dino jr prior to the whole band collapsing due to personality issues with J Mascis. Sorry, geeking out a little.

not the same guy as dinosaur jr! similar but very different bands. dinosaur started in the early 80s and built to spill are a 90s band. neither one is what i would think of as grunge, more indie rock. j mascis used to decribe dinsaur jr as "ear bleeding country".that's how i've always thought of it. my bloody valentine kinda modeled there sound off dino, so there kinda proto-shoegaze too. built to spill are a little more college rock and a lot less punk influenced. i'd say they had more in common with bands like weezer and pavement then grunge. pearl jam, alice in chains, and soundgarden are more like what grunge is. it's 70s classic rock with heavier punk and metal influenced guitars. blues rooted riffs, and kinda soaring big chested vocals. you can still hear the ghost of the 80s in it, the way you can hear the ghost of punk in post punk.

Dinosaur Jr., to me, was a punk band... but I'm old and I remember them from their early releases, and we didn't have have the plethora of labels to describe our music that the younger generations came up with. We did invent Emo, but that label went from defining kick-ass DC punk bands like Gray Matter to whatever the hell that music was in the late 90s early 2000s... but if you saw Dinosaur Jr. in the mid-80s it was at a punk show without a doubt. I digress, I saw the singer of Built to Spill play with his early punk band, Farm Days, in Twin Falls Idaho (visiting from my home in Las Vegas because my grandparents lived there).. I loved his stuff back then. Doug's never been played hardcore punk... even his first band was more alternative sounding than hardcore punk.....but he was definitely influenced by punk... even his stuff in Treepeople is punk (to me at least)... I'm sure there's a better label for it, but punk's the umbrella term imo... But, Martsch band Treepeople, although not a typical grunge band, did get big while they were living in Seattle Washington. Even though they were all from Idaho, they moved to Washington to be a part of that whole emerging Sub-Pop scene... that some call "grunge" but to me was just Northwest punk... it was certainly birthed from the legitimate punk scene.

Great song. Thanks for the react! Constructive criticism, try to jump into the reaction slightly quicker. A lot of people will not stick around for 4 min waiting to hear it. Again, thanks for the react, not a lot of Built to Spill out there.
