Built to Spill is a great band. I'm glad you did this one. I just found out recently that Doug was in another band I knew about. Built to Spill are more than this poppy song. Anyway, Doug was in Halo Benders. They have a fun song called Don't Touch My Bikini.

I’ve been listening to this album since it was released, but the one track I consistently return to is “You Were Right”. It’s not so jangly as this one. It’s more riffy and dynamic, with a greater variety of guitar tones, more intense drumming, and memorable lyrics.

Just a small comment on a change you made. I thought it would work, but I cannot understand a word you are saying while the music is playing. A smile or a thumbs up, or playing an air instrument pretty much conveys satisfaction. I had never heard of this group. I was expecting art rocky too, but the indie sound is quite cool.

Built to Spill, Modest Mouse, Pavement and Neutral Milk Hotel all made up the crux of the 90s indie rock scene. Just my personal opinion, but I believe Modest Mouse were the most captivating artist out of the four. Their first 3 records are very worth your while and make for a very deep and compelling listen…

I was just listening to the Built to Spill album this song comes from ("Keep It Like A Secret") and I thought to myself "JustJP would LOVE this album!" So I searched to see if you had ever reacted to any of their songs - and found this. Although this is a great song, I know your tastes and I wouldn't suggest it to you as a first Built to Spill song to hear. But now I'll watch the video to see what you think... By the way, Keep It Like A Secret is one of my FAVORITE albums of all time. Cheers!

Guit-armada is how I describe this album ... most of their songs have 2-4 guitar parts weaving together, complementing each other and creating a mesmerizing tapestry of sound. Their songs usually have more "parts" and a little more intricate. This song is probably their most popular, probably because they stick to the same chords over and over again, which is (as you say) pretty typically indie. Try "Time Trap" or "Temporarily Blind" from this album, as they are much more interesting (IMO).

Great find. I've never heard of them before either but this is a real good one. Here's a band and song for the comments if it ever needs to be looked up. The band is 'John & Mary'. The song is "The Azalea Festival". It's a real gem, from 1993, if I recall the year correctly. It's a band not many know. They're Canadian. Still want to push for the band Wolf People and their song "Castle Keep". I keep asking only because I think you'll dig it.

Hard to judge on one track but not bad at all. Better than some on the channel that some gush over, which can be said of some I love. What are you gonna do… Name reminds me of Built For Speed, Stray Cats… she’s a rockabilly philly with her top down, running that rod all over the town. Ahem…

More to the point, that cover has a distinctly "Guided by Voices" look to it. (I forget the name of that type of art - where you cut out and paste together things from different images to make a new one ... ah ... collage. The cover is a collage, which is how Bob Pollard of GBV improvised their first covers, and then kept on doing so even after they had money to pay for something more industry-standard.) It's possible that they're inspired by a certain Robert Pollard. If you have 1:05 to spare, you can treat yourself, secretly, to *Kicker of Elves* if you like. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jpaUi9yKkryqo3U.html

From their lo-fi years (first due to cash shortages, and then, for a while, as an aesthetic - Bob saying he was good at effing things up ) *The Hard Way*. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fctlm7SHtd2Zgmw.html (I think I prefer GBV, but if Built to Spill really were inspired by them, they'd probably say "of course!").
@sicko_the_ew
@sicko_the_ew Жыл бұрын
There isn't one fixed GBV recipe. Sometimes they hit, sometimes they miss. When they hit, it flies; when they miss, well they miss, wait a bit and they'll hit the spot again. Like when *The Batman Sees the Ball* . kzfaq.info/get/bejne/e8mToatpz5zFoIU.html (The young Bob Pollard was a pretty good baseball player - whatever that is. Someone said he "pitched a no hitter against Penn State", whatever that means. But he spent most of his youth as a fourth grade teacher, so must have been just short of professional level, by the sound of it. Doesn't matter. He probably would've spent that time dreaming of rock 'n roll, either way. Actually sometimes you get people on their videos saying he was their teacher. Used to sing to them!)

Fairly standard jangly, indie pop... Not unpleasant, when you're in the mood for such, but nothing really standout. I imagine it'd make pretty safe background music if you were holding a party for friends of varied musical tastes. I don't see this offending anybody. Course it's not exactly gonna bring the house down either...
