After Graduating from High School in 1993 I was lost. Being unmistakably gay in South Texas was a nightmare my entire life, but Bjork made me feel like I was just living in the wrong time and plane of existence. When I saw the cover of the Homogenic album I knew it was going to be epic. The veritable sound explosions and sensual rhythm pulled me into a dream world. She was feeling what I was feeling. She loved how I loved and was unapologetically giving everyone the finger of vulnerability. I am now 47 years old and cannot go a day without listening to something by Bjork. If I want to immerse myself in the entire story I sit back and play her music videos. They are just as powerful as her music. All in all Bjork is a gift to us all. She goes beyond storytelling by creating her own instruments and even stripping them away to make way for the harmonic diatribe of choral voices in the background. I'm so lucky to have discovered her early in life in the Sugar Cubes and hung around for her sonic journey as we both aged with love and loss. Thank you for your reaction videos on Bjork. Your commentary and discovery brought me much joy.

Homogenic is literally the most consistent masterclass of an album I’ve ever heard. Every song is incredible, and complements the other songs. Like All Is Full Of Love wouldn’t be as peaceful as it is, without Pluto placing it into context, and Pluto wouldn’t be as fun as it is without Alarm Call bringing in the dance beat. Every song has unique elements that make it stand out, but all of them still sound like they’re from the same area. THIS is how you make a consistent album.

Def listen to Post and Vespertine! Biophilia is a bit weaker, but it’s sonic palette is basically unrivaled from the rest of her albums. Björk literally made new instruments like the “singing Tesla coil” that plays on Thunderbolt.

@@Benheartsart She didn't make them, or even invent them. She's a musician lmao She either took an existing idea that wasn't in use or asked for a way to pull off a concept but she likely comissioned all the 'new' instruments she used

At the time Homogenic came out, Barnes and Noble had listening stations, and this was one of their featured albums. Bachelorette was the first song it played and it completely blew my mind. I'm pretty sure I had my parents buy me the CD that day. I was pre-internet pre-teen with typical pop and rock music leanings, and Homogenic was one of the most transformative moments in my musical tastes.

I think it is best to listen to her albums chronologically. Her albums are a diary of her life, like watching a cell divide and expand till it is fully realized. The album she makes at the end of her life is likely to be unlike anything else she has ever made or maybe she will come back to the beginning and in a way complete the cycle like a rebirth.

I may have mentioned this in an earlier video , Bjork is One of the few artists who's Discography is Best Absorbed & Appreciated when listening in Chronological Order. Her Artistic Evolution is Truly Magical a thing of Wonderment. - Debut - Post - Homogenic✅ - Vespertine - Medulla - Volta - Biophilia - Vulnicura - Utopia

I love your thoughtful takes on Bjork. I've been a fan for 36 years and have rarely had conversations about her music. Being a 50 year old male in the US south there aren't a lot of fans in my peer group lol. There's very little traditional structure so it takes a willingness to give in to the soundscapes she creates. On Bachelorette, It's funny you kept mentioning theater vibes because that's exactly how the video is designed. I never know how to introduce Bjork to people so I usually don't. It's a very personal and intimate type of music and you either get it or you don't. I went alone to see her at Red Rocks in 2003 and it was everything.

You absolutely have to do Vespertine, which is a sequel to this album. All is full of love was supposed to belong to the next album. Each subsequent album is even more specific. As Homogenic focused on beats and strings, Vespertine is microbeats and intimacy. Medulla is made only of human voices, and Volta has Japanese and Asian influences. Biophilia is a complete concept album for iPad with an app for each song where you can influence the melodies yourself. Overall, Bjork's songs work much better for the album as a whole.

I really enjoyed watching your reactions to an album I have enjoyed for many years. It takes me back to when I first moved to London. This album was part of the soundtrack to my life at that time - although I still listen to it regularly! I was about your age and living on the Sunshine Coast in Australia when Debut first came out and have loved Bjork ever since - following her through all her strange twists and turns. The remixes of Human Behaviour are a fav of mine too. I like how you came at the songs fresh and open without reading interpretations from others or from Bjork herself. It’s really refreshing to just hear your take of the lyrics, sounds, beats and textures in the music. It was great to see your appreciation and openness to this powerful album…

It's amazing how some can reason out different meanings from art than what was originally intended. Not to take value away from your interesting interpretation, but if I recall correctly from an old Bjork interview, the title "Homogenic," was in reference to the homogeneity of the sound of the album, in contrast to that of her previous album, Post, where the sonic landscape feels schizophrenic, due to the sonically diverse, albeit still wonderful, collection of album tracks.

Fun fact about the album cover. Alexander McQueen was the designer that came up with the cover look. At the time, and still today, he’s one of the most individualistic designers to come into the scene. He truly is unique in every way that he designs. Her using him as the designer makes the concept even more meaningful. Also, he was super inspired by the icy, yet vibrant, environment that the album created and was able to capture the music in a beyond perfect way. In addition, this album is the beginning of concept albums, so each album henceforth is summed up by the album name, and fleshed out in a beautiful order to further paint the picture of the album title.

Then I discovered Hunter via LimeWire after getting into Volta, not sure how much I heard throughout high school. Then I specifically remember I was waiting in the airport going from home back to college, waiting to check my luggage- and I heard 5 years. and I just loved it. Idk if that was the first time listening or what but that’s a pretty clear memory. Then I also remember getting into Pluto around that time at my home kitchen around the pencil sharpener and it was really clicking that climax at the end. Then idk how many years later I was at a baseball game with my family and I listened to Immature and it FINALLLY clicked with me. It’s got layers and a groove I never really realized. this album is one of my favs!!! 5 years is the best!!! but like all the songs are so great. The interesting thing about the lyrics in the last track is that the phrase forces you to say 'love' twice. All Is Full Of Love/All is full love love, like you are getting a double dose of love surrounding you whether you know it or not. I decided to check out Homogenic and other albums by her and fell in love (for the most part). Her vocals towards the end of Pluto are NOT for me. I feel like cringing 😩 I just can't handle it lol. I also prefer Howie's version of All Is Full of Love. Overall it's a great album and I'm glad you ended up getting it.

I read many years ago that her full use of vocal range was developed very young from when she would take walks and explore outside in the Iceland landscape. She liked to sing but sometimes the wind would blow so hard she had to scream to hear herself.

Vespertine HAS TO BE NEXT!! Bjork took everything she explored on Homogenic and Perfected it on Vespertine! But not only that, she created one of the best albums ever period. Imo, her Masterwork 🙂❤️

I think Bachelorette is a tango so the accordion is a reference to that.

Maybe someone has already written this but there is a making of "Homogenic" in which she explains how it was important for her to only use 1. drums 2. strings 3. vocals. So, yes, the strings are indeed very important here :-) but I would say they are also very present on her other albums.

I fell in love with Bjork as a teen in the 90s. Been following her since, and was incredibly lucky to see her live in Toronto for the Vespertine tour in 2001. Best concert ever! While watching your reaction to Homogenic, I recalled watching a documentary about the making of the album. I did a search, and voila, I found it on KZfaq. I highly recommend watching it! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rrp2Y9hlzN7KoaM.htmlsi=zY4DfHy63qVYlGlI
