The original master of this LP in 1983 was done by the legend that is Robert Ludwig.
Yes' 90125 has been heralded as one of the great mastering accomplishments in the mid-1980's before the onslaught of the CD format.
But now, with a 2 LP at 45RPM alternative, mastered by Kevin Gray the question becomes whether or not the "RL" can be beat.
That's what I was excited to discover. Join me for an in depth analysis.

AP is king. I've never been more consistently knocked out by a label. It's really making me question my prior thought of well I'm in love with my Japanese Fragile and Mofi Close so I'll pass on those. It's just about to the point if it's an album I love and AP does it I buy it. AP is about the only guarantee in life!

99% of the time anyway... There is an occasional "dud", once in a blue moon, ie. Pretzel Logic UHQR, where the OG is still superior. Otherwise, they have a stellar track record! 🙂

The album was recorded at levels so high, early copies had a warning about it. It is a major analog recording. Now, can someone do BIG GENERATOR and DRAMA this well? Thanks!

My copy is via a 3rd party seller in Canada so I will have to wait another couple weeks! When Chad announced the Atlantic 75 series, 90125 was the first album that I was an automatic buy because I love this record. I can't wait! Cheers

Another outstanding job David. Although I enjoy this band immensely I think I will stay with my OG. I hope Fragile and The Yes album receive a minimum of what this record received! If I favored this LP as much as the other two I would splurge. Thanks again sir.

Thanks so much for sharing! Have loved 90125 for 40 years!!! And unlike a lot of 80s albums that sound "thin", the production on 90125 is stellar! It's big, bassy, punchy, cinematic. Just a joy to listen to(and the songs ain't too shabby either 😉).

Nice review! I am still waiting for my copy to arrive and I have an original RL as well. It just goes to show the 45 RPM has a little more room to breathe and I am guilty of liking KG's mastering chain. That said, I do like how RL did his originals.

Your "OG" pressing was pressed on the West Coast by Allied Records(AR on the label). They did use either lacquers cut at Specialty(SRC) or maybe the metal parts provided by Masterdisk or Specialty. I have an original promotional copy, which was indeed pressed by Specialty(SP on the label). So, this is the absolute "OG". In the runout, Side 1: 1-1 (SRC logo) ST-C-835337-B Side 2: 2 ST-C-835338-A (SRC logo) MASTERDISK RL I also have a CRC Club copy which was pressed at Columbia's Carrolton, GA pressing plant. There are no markings in the runout indicating anything other than the pressing plant mark, G-1. So, they obviously did the cutting and plating there. Who knows what their source was. Although the RL copy has a little higher definition of the grooves, which may be indicative to a Specialty pressing, they both sound pretty close to me. I will be interested in hearing the new AP release. Thank you for another great review!

I have a Japanese pressing with US Matrix numbers including MASTERDISK RL! Sounds fabulous! I also have a German original with MASTERDISK RL! Neither cost me more than $25! It is a no brainer for me!

The Thumbnail refers to this release as a UHQR release. Acoustic Productions did not list the Atlantic 75 releases as UHQR releases.

I'm assuming of course that with your two synchronized turntables (excellent way to do it, BTW!) that you have identical phono sections, amplification, cartridges, AND interconnects, right...? Have you tried briefly switching which pressing you are playing on which turntable just to ensure that both setups are indeed rendering the EXACT same result? Thanks!
@SafeAndSoundTXAudioExcursion
@SafeAndSoundTXAudioExcursion 2 ай бұрын
This is an excellent detailed question. Yes the setups are identical and flow through the same phono stage. I will update the description with the equipment list. I do, for good measure, swap the LPs across the turntables as well to confirm the outcome. I also record each LP to digital file and look for any deviations when the audible difference is close. I did a video on my process and will update it in the near future with the digital file comparison aspect. Lastly, I do a l comparison via headphones and speakers for some “close in” sound evaluation. Thanks for asking.

It seems to me it would better to get a regular ATCO RL pressing than the more expensive AP. I had expected the 75th anniversary, pressed on higher quality vinyl, would be quieter than the ordinary early 80's record. Chad should had cut the new version from the Ludwig plates(if available) onto new vinyl.
@SafeAndSoundTXAudioExcursion
@SafeAndSoundTXAudioExcursion 2 ай бұрын
That would make it a UHQR in the AP world and well out of the reach of many $ wise. Who knows if the RL Plates even exist? The Kevin Gray improvement makes it a moot point IMO.
@R3TR0R4V3
@R3TR0R4V3 2 ай бұрын
Heck, by the time you find a nice minty copy, you'd probably be better off getting the AP. I guarantee you it's more quiet than an 80's pressing, as confirmed in his summary at the end. 🤷🏻

@@SafeAndSoundTXAudioExcursion $60 is a lot of money to pay for 2 LP's cut at 45rpm from a half-inch master tape copy. I had that Leave It acapella track along with 3 other dance remixes that appeared on cassette tape title Twelve Inches On Tape.

@@SafeAndSoundTXAudioExcursion Still, if the basic premise of your channel is that you have such sophisticated ears, you're qualified to give reliable, nuanced opinions of vinyl pressings, etc., it probably wouldn't hurt to put a little more effort into your videos. There's no shame in doing a second take if you accidentally misread "strucking of the pluck," especially when you're commending the meticulous quality and precision of a release.
