That's a strategy: You underwhelm people at first then when you bring out the good stuff, no one knows if it actually does look good or if just looks good by comparison to what they showed you originally. Looking at how it looks recently - I wanna play it.

I absolutely LOVE the sonic adventure games and can’t wait to play this one. Some of the concepts look so interesting

The game is looking more and more promising. The animations look much better, the gameplay looks super cool and fun, the cyber space levels remind me of the best boost stages, and the open world is just staggering. Oh, and of course; The music so far is top tier!! Sky Sanctuary sounds super good!!

I don't know about that, Super syonic may be play a role in the boss fights, but also may have more freedom to use, like a cool down system, and getting into areas by flight.

Designing a world that you're intended to rush through, whilst being rich and worth exploring feels like a tough balance to strike. Hope they nail it but not convinced yet.

After everything I've seen so far, I think it's gonna be a good Sonic game! Whether or not it'll rival the likes of Unleashed, or Generations remains to be seen. But I'm so glad to see that the stuff they've been showing has majorly improved since June! There's definitely some Breath of the Wild influence, but I can't help but feeling like there's some Horizon & Shadow of the Colossus influence as well. Still looking forward to it, and I hope it can exceed expectations!

Something to note is that the first island can be beaten within 35 minutes, so it’s also like breath of the wild in that regard, you will be weaker when you get to the boss because no upgrades and no side content, but it is possible

As someone who really doesn't care about Sonic, I must admit this was a very comprehensive, fair and balanced assessment of this game. It intrigued me, not enough to get hyped for it but now I'm looking at it in a different light. Falcon makes a lot of fair points and I hope this does well.

I'm quite excited, never played a Sonic game but always had the little buddy in the back of my head, waiting for a great one to come along and this may just get me into the series.

Sonic nowadays gets comparisons from almost every game, be it a good comparison or a negative take, but I see Sonic Frontiers as it's own thing. The Gameinformer magazine really did go in depth about it, gets me more interested and invested in what Sega is trying to bring.

It’s worth considering how big the fanbase of this franchise is. Unfortunately, due to the lackluster titles we’ve experienced for over a decade it can feel like only the diehards still talk and care about it but at the moment there seems to be a light at the end of a tunnel, everyone comes out of the woodwork and you see the amazing impact this series has had on people and how much we’d all love for it to be good again. The fans haven’t given up on this series despite the rough journey and I think this game being good would be the turnaround we need so we have a good reason to be a part of it and for Sonic to be golden again. What game series could survive nearly 20 years of terrible games yet still be in vogue? It goes to show there is truly something special that we all can see that’s not merely blinded by nostalgia. We all need this one to be THE one and slowly but surely, more and more is pointing in this direction, and that the series could be done with its trial and error phase with 3D. If this formula can accomplish a feat of an 85+ Metacritic score then Sonic Team simply needs to continue pushing out titles with the same concept but with different plots and improved and expanded upon technical aspects with every sequel.

I don't get the hate at all. Sonic is going in a new direction and one can only praise a developer for pushing boundaries of their established franchises, otherwise their artistic medium will feel exhausted and people will stop playing the franchise. It just seems to be a popular choice to hate SEGA everytime they create a new Sonic title. Sure, there are certainly curiosities to the trailers - overt distasteful elements of Frontiers maybe - but for all we know, those elements will be the opposite of said woes, and will rather, hopefully, result in a brilliant game. Ambition is warranted, and ambition is often rewarded, even if said ambition isn't what everyone wants. I, for one, think this is a breath of fresh air; and, in the landscape of modern day gaming, that is precisely what we need.

You perfectly encapsulated my thoughts and expectations, and coming from another lifelong sonic fan from the beginning it’s clear you have an understanding of the ups and downs and what players have wanted sega to do with the greatest video game character ever(in a tie with a certain plumber)

Falcon, don't forget the Sonic Cycle before you go all in on this. I'm just going to wait until it launches to reserve my critical opinion for it (and just enjoy it for what they show now... but not really get my hopes up on it being as amazing as it should be).

Imo I feel that the early previews of Sonic Frontiers were intentionally made to look bad and as we slowly get more "leaks" of gameplay and cut scenes it ultimately shifts casual and experienced fans opinions from very critical to a hyped up expectation for what is appearing to be a actually good 3D open world RPGish sonic game.

Maybe a top 10 sonic games video ? Especially since falcon is a hardcore fan

Okay, you've convinced me to give it a chance when it comes out. One of the things I liked about Sonic Adventure 1 was to explore the different areas outside of the levels, including the ancient ruin, back then it wasn't much, but grounded the world a bit. So this is something the open world aspect might add. But I miss being able to play other characters, and this is something I hope they correct, it could offer replayability but also everybody has their favourite characters. And I miss 2 player Sonic too. If they were to add these to Frontiers, then even better, though it's very unlikely by this point. I guess one of the cool things about Adventure was collecting characters as you progress and you could play from their perspective and tell other parts of the story.

As soon as they clarified that what they showed was just the overworld and not the full extent of the game people should have chilled out but of course raging is more fun

I'm hype for this game. I LOVED Sonic Adventure 2 Battle. Played hundreds of hours on my GameCube all those years ago. The head of the "Sonic Team" at Sega Takashi Iizuka was also a developer on Sonic Adventure 1 and 2. He said that he wants Frontiers to set a new template for Sonic games to follow, similar to Sonic Adventure 1. If this game is similar to Adventure 2 Battle, then I'm deff all in.

I have never played a sonic game but this seems cool and I hope the sonic fans get a game they deserve

I really hope there are cool combos you can perform as Sonic in combat. Like I want some Devil May Cry combos and then cool ways to finish off the enemies. Also, I want to be able to go super fast for like 20 seconds by maybe charge dashing, and then Sonic just literally runs through cannon fodder enemies. I also hope there's multiple ways from going to point A to point B in cool stylistic ways, like the typical Sonic parkour, but then also just blitzing through and even running on water. I saw the game has puzzles which is really cool. Nice way to break up the monotony of combat and running. And also, hopefully we can get multiplayer, and even multiple characters with different ways they play like.

With the titan bosses I got some shadow of the colossus vibes.

The running in a circle to do things is a very Platinum thing. Wonderful 101 has you do it to convert civilians and stunned enemies into allies, Astral Chain has you to do it with your Legion to bind enemies with the chain itself, from which you can use a special move which varies depending on what Legion and weapon you currently have equipped.

I have a feeling that this game will be a success, the initial gameplay and reveal was made to build up hype and show us the structure of the game, they still have a lot of work ahead but I see promise

Hey Falcon, nice thoughts, I really hope you're right, this game could be great - for me the most important thing would be to really get into and leverage the potential with the movement mechanics the thing that excited me most about sonic games in the past was the really fast and fluid movement mechanics - tbh, something that I really like in this regard is rumbleverse - say what you will about that game, the movement mechanics are great for running, jumping, bouncing, and then when you add in the dodge mechanics to add depth to the common movement mechanics... as well as ways to interact with the environment (maybe something like pathway also) ... your combos and ways of moving around become much much deeper, then add some tasty grapple mechanics like Sekiro... borrowing from the greats like the mario games triple jumps, long jumps wall jumps etc, and even stuff like hollow knight air dash/air combos... *DAMN A GAME THAT INTEGRATED THESE PAST SUCCESS would be a truly marvelous environment to interact with* I can see that the sonic universe would compliment mechanics like this super well - I would hope that any game designer would be wanting to learn from the best games in terms of movement mechanics - good luck, innovation like this imo would be a welcome addition to the brilliant articulation that has been Mario/BOTW/Sekiro/Hollow Knight etc

Definitely intriguing. Some of it looks so weird to me. The enemies look almost randomly generated, pixels thrown together, but unlike anything I've seen. The huge combat options and skill trees is another cool element that could work. We'll see!

I hope so much that this is the Sonic game that revives this sinking franchise. The original 3 sonics and both sonic adventures were such a huge part of my childhood, I want to see this succeed.

I keep seeing jokes and memes and stuff about this game but I'm with you that this game looks awesome and refreshing. I've only played 1 sonic game back on the genesis (don't remember which one it was) but this looks like what I want from an open world, running around as fast as possible lol. I'm optimistic on this

I feel what is most important for this game is the ability to control sonic's speed. In the 2d areas what we normally see is sonic on a track going super fast, but in the boss fights that speed that should be his secret weapon is lost and he becomes just this slow moving jumping bowling ball. If they give you normal movement speed but holding the trigger gives you access to you super speed will instantly give this great feeling of power and agility that would be so fun against a boss like bayonettas witch time just at your disposal, put it on a guage in a boss fight and give us infinite sprint in open world areas and half the fun will just be playing with that power, then you can work in bosses and courses around that

Looks like i'll get the OG Sonic Adventure feeling from this game but that'd also be expecting other characters to be playable. If frontiers can get the classic cast back in the open world, my hype levels will go up. Thu having Super Sonic in the open world is a great start.

I wish they called the cyber spaces zones it would tie all the classic games together, and in the comics they explain zones are basically mini pocket dimensions Eggman conquered that connect to each other which explained the insanity that is sonics world

Far too many times I've passed on playing a 3d Sonic because I cared far too much for the reviews instead of coming to my own conclusion. Not saying the reviews were wrong about many of the recent Sonic games but I'm not touching a review for this one. As long as the game isn't broken I'm buying it and playing it without influence

I've been saying this for the better part of two decades now as an OG Sonic fan, give us back the MOMENTUM or any sense of physics that the 2D games had, and Adventure semi had. To just be able to roll into a ball and coast down a hill would add hours of fun for idiots like me and kids. Also, the thing that has made Mario fun to just run around as is the sense of weight and control the player has in his subtle movements, Sonic lost that around Sonic '06 where he's practically full tilt or full stop in all his movements and actions.

It looks "promising". If it does well, they can achieve the potential they're going for. Otherwise, it looks empty and very "beta".

i liked the werehog gameplay from unleashed and i loved the regular sonic gameplay so fusing the two sounds really fun having combos while being fast is like if unleashed did everything right
