Sonic Team was going to make a game called 'Sonic Xtreme' for the Saturn..but they cancelled it. I think 'Sonic Xtreme' was supposed to be a 'test' for Sonic Adventure and what it could end up being. Then the DreamCast showed up and Sonic Adventure came out.

This game allowed me to play Knuckles in Sonic 2 as well as Sonic 3 and Knuckles for the first time back then. I will always remember it for that.

With how active the modding scene in general is, you'd think... maybe we should make a topic about it on one of these modding website's forums? EDIT: Seriously, find out what forums I need to post in and I will go do it myself. This would be amazing, then we could try to get James and Mike to play it one day or something even. Who knows, all we have to do is ask though right?

Try posting on the Sonic Retro forums, there’s a large, active community of people there, and I bet someone would be willing to carry out the task.

Actually I went to the forum and looked around to see if I could post as a Guest OR create an account but I couldn't figure out how to do that. I am still very much interested/willing to do that though if it was possible. Like I said I can't believe nobody has already done it before if the modding community is that strong for Sonic titles but then again maybe Sega Saturn is one of those things that's difficult to emulate for like N64 used to be, etc. But anyway the short answer is no, however if I could've figured out how to make an account on the forum I would have lol.

My brother actually had a Sega Saturn with a handful of games and I remember this was one of them. I used to stay up all night running around the 3D world cause at the time I remember I think the N64 was brand new and I didn't have one as of yet, so the idea that we could play Sonic in 3D blew me away. It's a real shame that the Saturn was as much of a flop as it was. They almost shouldn't have released it and instead have just gone to the Dreamcast next, if that was the case SEGA may have actually survived the early 2000's.

Generations established this Sonic as his childhood form, whereas modern Sonic was his late teenage years. Then Forces retconned this and made classic Sonic from another dimension. Honestly, I prefer the former, as from a storytelling perspective, it helps us to relate to the character better as Sonic’s design has clearly changed significantly over the years, and we could see things from that perspective. For instance, we like to describe our childhood as colorful and bright and happy, as it is a place of innocence, and classic Sonic and his visual aesthetic from the first few games fit that perspective(Sonic still has baby fat!) Modern Sonic, we could describe as more of our teenage/adult years, as the art design shifts from colorful to more realistic with realistic textures, less geometric patterns and more serious problems beyond stop the bad guy(the string of awkward 3D games are proof of that!). That’s why I hated it when SEGA made classic Sonic be from another world altogether, rather than be a Sonic in his childhood years.

Technically speaking it's Sonic 32 as Saturn was a 32-bit machine. Pretty impressive for them to get the 3D graphics they did get from this and other games on such a weaker machine by comparison. Sonic 64 finally truly came to be a few years later on Dreamcast though. Sonic Adventures and Sonic Adventures 2 which are considered by many still to be the greatest Sonic games ever made.

If only SEGA of America had done their job properly, then Sonic Team could have put their efforts into creating an internationally successful Sonic game for their 32-bit system. Saturn had a huge number of great titles in Japan. But for a mascot based game, considering the "hardcore" gaming demographic the Saturn had in Japan, it wouldn't have made so much sense, unless they could push the title internationally. From a business perspective, it was understandable that they switched development to the Saturn's successor. It gave the Dreamcast a really good start in life...

⁢⁢⁢ ⁢⁢⁢ SEGA of America failed. The direction they went with the Saturn failed. hey launched the console when there were few games available. They failed to perceive the way video games were going in North America. Localising a lot of the games people wanted, that remained Japan only, would have gone a long way to solving that issue. And let's not forget they publicly stated that the Saturn was history when they had nothing to replace it. They did not "do their best". If they had, it wouldn't have been such a big failure in North America.
