5 жыл бұрынSonic Jam (Japanese: ソニックジャム) is a 1997 Sega Saturn game. Primarily it is a compilation containing the four Sega Mega Drive Sonic platform games - Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and Sonic & Knuckles, however it also contains bonus content in the form of Sonic World and a number of different gameplay options.
Sonic World is a 3D adventure world with many buildings containing art, history, music, movies and character profiles is contained within, plus the mission mode where you must complete certain missions in the quickest time. At the time of Sonic Jam's release this game was a selling point as gamers were eager to see Sonic in 3D for the first time.
Sonic World is said to have been the basis for Sonic Adventure.

This is super-nostalgic, I would've loved playing this. Imagine that: a free-roaming sort of Mario 64 style Classic Sonic 3D platformer where you run around and collect stuff, that would've ruled! It's the prototype of Sonic Adventure, and that's OK. Still, in Sonic Jam, running around in this colorful space, where you can enter the buildings and look at all the cool concept art and commercials and trailers makes this one of the best Sonic the Hedgehog compilations ever released to date.

Indeed! I would love to visit all the locations from the classic games in this style, and some others too! South Island and West Side Island, Little Planet, Angel Island, Neutrogic High Zone (still think it should've been Neutronic, but whatever), imagine the possibilities!

If you think about it, they had all the pieces to make a great Sonic 3d game on the Saturn. Imagine hub levels like this and Sonic in Christmas Nights with 3D Blast bonus stages and a multiplayer mode like Sonic R all in one title using the Nights/Xtreme engine for boss battles... 😇

@@gumi6751 Most Sonic fans already know this, I think what James Bartley meant is that if only they could have completed this game on the Saturn so we fans of the Saturn back then could have had a full 3D version of a Sonic game on the Saturn rather than having to wait years for the dreamcast, a lot of fans tend to believe that one of the main reasons the Saturn failed is that it did not have a full fledged 3D Sonic game upon launch and continued not to have one through its life cycle which hurt the legitimacy of it for that having a full fledged Sonic game on a Sega system.

@@NewToCool74 I think it's better that it didn't. Remember Earthworm Jim and Bubsy failed to transition to 3D that generation and they haven't had any new non-remake games since (well except Bubsy) So I think Sonic would likely have suffered the same fate. Dreamcast and its power allowed Sonic to get praise back then. Sonic Adventure gets trashed now for not holding up well, but it was well-received at the time it originally released.

@@gumi6751 You're so wrong. Sonic World is just a prototype of what Sonic Team had as a game by that time. But they left the project and moved to Dreamcast to work on Sonic Adventure.

@@ChrisTheChocobo He isn't wrong; he is only half correct. This game was an experiment of Sonic in 3D, and then the team decided to move on to the Dreamcast but did not want all of their efforts on this to be wasted. As such, they decided to port some of its features, such as gameplay physics ideas, over to the Dreamcast Sonic Adventure game, but then SEGA, due to wanting to rebrand itself somewhat, fit in with the idea that 3D games meant more realistic and serious tones and because they wanted Sonic to appeal to a new generation and bring back fans who left for Mario and what-not, they choose to give Sonic and Co a more modern look and put him in more realistic environments to create a new sonic "wow" factor that attracted people and ultimately increased sells.

Actually, all Sonic games on the SEGA Saturn used the same Sonic model. So Sonic Jam, Sonic 3D Blast, and Sonic R all shared models.

Qwerp interesting fact about the Saturn, it could render triangles so all triangles are actually 4 vertex rectangles with 2 vertices sharing a position.

For the longest time, in my innocent young brain when I first got Sonic Jam I thought if you did all the work to complete the time trials. Someone told me at school you'd unlock the full 3D game they put in there, so for many summers I'd sit there trying to collect all the rings and beat the times. The last part was so tedious and hard for me, you make it look easy. So many years it eluded me, when the internet started to become what it is, I'd go on forums and people would make stupid jokes like "That secret you get is well worth it". I got older and sold off my Saturn and games like a dummy, it was until recently I got an itch to replay Sonic Jam. My dreams were shattered at the ridiculous prices the game goes for. So I came here...to finally see the secret broke me. So I'm typing this with heavy tears rolling down my eyes. There was never a secret 3D full game it was just credits.

The aesthetic is so cute, I honestly like it much better than the semi-realism the series ended up going with. The world here feels so much more coherent.

Super Mario 64 already beat Sonic Jam, but it has a nasty consequence of being personalized. Oh, and Sonic Adventure followed that game on Dreamcast, thankfully.

What is the secret or method to jump through that ring by the water fall? I spent 30 minutes jumping off that floating platform and could never get Sonic to jump through it. I tried jumping when it was at it's highest point and it still did not work, Sonic just falls into the water.
