This is a small mod I worked on this week that allows Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Amy to use their mouths more in-game, rather than mind projecting their screams at you.

I always though it looks strange when I was a kid but then when I notice his teeth are shape more like an animal's so I thought that maybe he talks like that because he is supposed to be an animal who often communicate with their ears and eyebrows. But nowadays I think Sega really want to show off their new facial expressive features which come off really excessive and uncannily off

The fact that they put separate dialogues in for _every area in the game_ amazes me. Like, who's gonna wait around to hear what Sonic has to say about the snowboarding segment ahead? Nobody. No one's got that patience. But they did it anyway. Legendary game.

@Sonic Jesus man, their just idle lines, it's not that deep. Who's to say the developers didn't just add these in for fun and nothing more? I'm pretty sure 1998 Sonic Team was already aware players wasn't gonna stand around for 3 minutes just to hear Sonic talk about how cold Ice Cap is or how high Sky Deck is, it's just harmless fun the developers decided to add in. It's no different from Sonic killing himself in Sonic CD if you stand around for 3 minutes doing nothing.

@Sonic THAT'S why Sonic games have had a shaky history with 3D gameplay. Idle voice lines! Thanks for solving this mystery and telling Sega how it is! It's not that deep and I highly doubt anyone with any kind of control over the games will see this. Just enjoy the work put into this mod that gives love to a nice small detail.

@Sonic SA1 was not made in 10 months. That's misinformation I've seen with not a lot of evidence to back it up. Sonic Adventure's development began after NiGHTS into Dreams was finished (late 1996), as a Saturn game. So at latest it began development in early 1997. Admittedly rushing games isn't just a Sonic Team problem, a lot of beloved games were rushed.

I'm pretty sure that was actually a translation error. In the Japanese version, he says “Is this Angel Island?” It context, he's confused on whether or not he was on Angel Island, which crashed into the Mystic Ruins.

Probably because it looks a lot different from when he last visited, mainly due to it somewhat merging with the Mystic Ruins area. The line reading is wrong, though. It should be: "Sooo... *this* is Angel Island?" Rather than: "So _this_ is Angel Island!"

I like these idle dialogues, shows details about the stages and characters in the game, and makes the game feel "more alive". Also, that animation it's pretty good, it was strange to see them talking without using their mouth, now it actually makes sense.

It amazes me how every character have lines for every type of situation, every area, including areas you don't expect them to have any idle dialogue, etc., Sonic Team must've had a lot of time on their hands or were already blowing their load on the game that they decided to get as much out of the voice actors than realistically was needed.

@@Slipperyslab To be fair, unleashed looks cleaner, has (mostly) better lighting, better audio, and the animation is way less janky. But sa1 cutscenes can look good too. Honestly, I'd prefer sa1 over unleashed if the models and animation were bumped to 2021 standards, because I think they're pretty good on their own.
