Sonny Liston: A man who grew up as an illegally kept slave on a plantation, A man who was a homeless child who went onto become a juvenile felon just to survive while sleeping on park benches, A man who had no formal education, A man who had to fight and claw his way through over 5,000 men boxing to the death as a teenager just to have a chance to have a second chance at life, A man went through life with devote faith inside of the Catholic religion, A man who dedicated his remaining portion of his life to make a positive example for troubled youths through philanthropy, A man who was employed by the mob as a legbreaker, A man who was once thought of invincible, A man who's life cam crashing down with realization of defeat, A man who turned back to crime with it being his own undoing, A man who was in the end left broken and alone, A man who's life and legacy is largely unknown and forgotten, Sonny Liston, "A man"

@flowrepins6663 had his moments? The dude spent 2-3 years calling out Floyd Patterson after steamrolling literally everyone in the heavyweight division so that no one could debate whether or not he really deserved a title shot, just to get booed everytime the fight announcer said his name to spectators. He didn't know how to read so he memorized a speech he had planned on giving to the people of his hometown when he got home after finally beating Patterson for the heavyweight title, just to exit his plane to 0 people welcoming him home. He had a hard life from beginning to end. He tried to be a good person, but when people ignored that and called him a monster, he finally decided to give them what they wanted.

Liston was a star because most people thought before Ali, that he was exalted to eventually become the Greatest Heavyweight Champion of All Time. He was feared due to his punching power, and with Sonny's mob ties and naturally intimidating appearance, ordinary people and fighters a like cried in their dressing rooms after meeting Liston because they where that afraid of his strength. But Liston's image in the public was often one of a duel nature, Liston was also known worldwide for his philanthropy. He worked by day as a philanthropist who was a troubled youth mentor who funded children's hospitals and orphanages and the next minute he was running with the mob. I've read in numerous boxing biographies that fighters such as George Foreman, Cleveland Williams, Sonny Liston, Joe Louis, Earnie Shavers,Jersey Joe Walcott, Ken Norton and Joe Frazier would seclude themselves on remote farms preferably near a lake where they would run the trails in the morning in heavy boots, chop wood, throw bales of hay and row around a lake to supplement their training which was very simplistic but taken to the absolute limit of rope skipping, heavy bag, speed bag, sparring and calisthenics and yet they all had some of the best speed, punching power, stamina and physiques the heavyweight division has ever seen.

I recently went back to school in hopes to being a chemical dependency counselor, and for my public speaking class I'm doing a short speech on Sonny Liston. I'm nervous as hell in large part because I've got less than six minutes to cover his childhood, criminal career and prison, discovering boxing and his career, Ali fights and mysterious death. Tough task, I just want him to be remembered and for people to understand he was a victim of circumstances. Part of the reason for his dislike of the media was the fact that he was made to look mean and dumb. Being someone of average intelligence like I believe he was, his lack of education made it to where he wasn't able to defend himself verbally as well as he'd have liked

Mike Tyson referenced Liston and Jack Dempsey as the fighters he represents. Cold merciless killers with their hands. Ray Arcel said :When Jack Dempsey approached the ring it was the sense that a tiger had been released. Hungry men with no chance in life but what they could do with their fists. One of the greatests of all times. A pity he chose to lose against Ali. One of the most underestimated champion.

If I could choose 1 iconic fight that never happened it would have to be THE TITAN AGAINST THE WARHEAD SONNY LISTON VS MIKE TYSON The punching power would be enough to settle the debate of who the hardest puncher was
