Sonos and Google Home Setup and Working Together
The newest integration between Sonos and IFTTT gives us an incredible ability to control Sonos with our Google Home, Google Home Mini, Google Home Hub, or really, any Google Assistant device.
Sonos and Google Home can now completely work together because the IFTTT.com integration gives your Google Home the ability to wake Sonos, play sonos (including any favorite), pause, next song, previous, change the volume, and a few other controls.
Finally, we no longer have to ask if #GoogleHome can play Sonos speakers! It's honestly been forever coming, but now you can play any of the #Sonos Play:1, Play:3, Play:5, or really any other speakers.

Not sure if someone had already asked, but will this setup work with the S2 Sonos App using playbar and woofer? S1 no longer works and keeps asking me to use S2, but I noticed Google home can only add S1 on Google Home App. Thanks!

Have you been able to make both speaker work in conjunction? Basically make Google home emulate a Sonos speaker for multiroom sound without buying more Sonos speakers?

Definitely a great video - nice job. I will reluctantly say as a Google Home user though, practically all of this is done natively with Alexa. All you need to do is add the Alexa skill, search for new devices, and then all your sonos speakers work with Alexa voice control. Sonos and Google have a long way to go to catch up to this!

Great information! I was very disappointed at how Sonos worked with the Google Assistant, even after buying a voice controlled Sonos product. Your video changed that. Thanks very much. Now if only there was some way to group different Sonos speakers using voice control, it would be perfect.

If I want Google Assistant to control a few different things like Volume Up, Volume Down, Pause ect..... do I have to do separate Applets?

Hey Richard - Yeah, you do. Unfortunately.... This is as close as we get with Sonos right now. We know Google Assistant integration is coming and I've been watching Alexa get better and better integration. It's just a matter of time, I'd say.

Got a problem with my google home , there's no power going through. It fell off the counter and stop working. I even change outlets. Is there something Ivan do ?

It let me follow your instructions all the way to the Google Assistant part :- "Say a Simple Phrase...... and when I typed in "Play Jazz FM", the UK Jazz Radio station, I got the error "! This phrase is reserved by the Google Assistant. Please rephrase." Any Idea what I am doing wrong?

Yep! So you have to use a term that isn’t already being used by Google as part of their base commands. You could ask that before and it would have played on your GH.

Great question. Honestly, it's trial by fire. For the most part, what I can tell you is that if you ask it to play a radio station or music of any kind, that's being reserved. I usually use commands like "start my (sonos name) jazz"

when I try to setup an aplet, all I get is "options unavailable" on the Sonos side of things. Am I doing something wrong? I tried to reconnect the service already

Hi just got myself a sonos 1 having problems Alexa is answering questions ok but when I ask to play a radio station all I get is Alexa saying undefined

Honestly, I can't really advise you much here. I didn't see it happen and so I can't say if it just popped something inside a little and there's no real damage, or if the device would be unsafe to plug in. I really have 0 capability of helping here. Sorry Charles!

Is this still accurate?. Thinking of purchasing a G Nest Hub Max and want to make sure it talks to Sonos as I have 3 Sonos speakers.

Hey Jacob, sadly no. There’s not a true connection between the two devices themselves. Just a control connection.

Sadly no...those two companies have been having fights. You could try something like IFTTT and that should work. Or connect it to the SmartThings app and that should do it. :)

i bought a google home mini and was happy as a kid when i was installing my hue and turn off and on with my voice. Than i installed my sonos and found out that it is not working in my langue (Dutch), so... what the hell!!! I will try this route! Thanks!

You can't Airplay with anything that isn't Apple :) You used to be able to cast and do other kinds of audio playing through Google's speakers, but not any longer.

After having the link between IFTTT and Google home - Shouldn't it be shown on the the list of controlling application of the assistant? Since IFTTT did not work I've tried the Yonomi (which is on the list) and it works

Automate Your Life am I missing something? I don't see any commands to start playing Sonos. I just want to be able to say "play my imagine dragons station on Pandora in the family room" and it start play on the Sonos. Is this possible? Can you guide me please?

So you have to set that favorite up in the Sonos app. Do that and then come back into IFTTT and you can write your requested command into the applet like I did in the video here.

As far as I can tell you can't get it to play specific songs. Alexa is far easier and you can tell it to play any song you like, pause and turn up and turn down music without typing specific instructions.

You have to favorite a specific song in order to get it to play one. Obviously that’s not going to be great for lots of songs...just your actual favorites

is it possible to group the Sonos speaker in the google hope app, with other speakers ? to do multirom Music ? For example: you have on Sonos and one harman kardon citation one, can they play together ? i want to build my hole apartment with different systems

I tried this last month but it is very limiting and you need to recall the command exactly. Now that Chromecast Video allows audio groups my planned Sonos expansion is very much on hold as my TV CC AV amps have a new function which is great . They (Sonos) really have dropped a clanger with the delayed roll out of GA

It's all good functionality, but yes, ultimately you have to remember your commands so only a few are truly available.

Do I have to select Sonos separately or can it be lumped with my 3 google home units as part of "all speakers"? I don't want to buy any more google home speakers in case the time comes when I don't use Google Play. I want a speaker that I can use with my phone, accessories or another smart accessory. But I want the speaker to be part of all the speakers so when the Sonos is playing in the living room, the same song is broadcasting on the Google Home and Google mini's elsewhere in the house. Can this be done? Thank you.

Not yet, no. Sonos cannot be included in multi room audio unless it’s a Sonos one or Beam.

okay this is more up to date though i do not have any Sonos speakers as of yet i see a good buy are the pair of play ones from Costco,i know they have no mic but can be controlled via minis, can they be put into google speaker groups?thanks great vid as always

I for the life of me can't get this to work. I've tried everything 4 times. IFTT sees all my Sonos rooms but it will still only play on the google assistant and not on any of 7 sosnos speakers. Is there a timeframe it takes to set itself up? Any words of wisdom?

Hmmmm...I can't say I've struggled with it, nor have I heard many having issues with it. Sorry Kyle, not a lot of guidance I can give here...other than maybe try casting and seeing if you can get Sonos to play through the GH app?

Automate Your Life one thing i did notice in GH is that the sonos appears but i can’t play any of the speakers through the GH app. It recognizes all 7 speakers though.

I would say so. Yonomi doesn’t have the wake Sonos capability that IFTTT does.

You can create that. The action is there. Pause. Eventually from there Sonos goes to sleep.

It integrates direct into the app, but not in groups. You can make it the default speaker for one Google Home speaker though!

@@AutomateYourLife I have two recievers (1 indoor and 1 outdoor) and I'm trying to figure out the best way that I can get them to play synced playing the same music. One thought that comes to mind is using chromecast audio, this way I can play music on both of them and control it from Google Home and my phone. Not sure if I'm missing any other possibilities of making this work. Any thoughts?

I’d start by seeing if Sonos can be triggered by anything else. For example, you can create a button on your iPhone (if you have one) to turn on your speakers. From there, I’d test the Google connection. Same deal....

so Ive started with my google home by creating a simple response command ie "Hey Google, Who wears the trousers?" with the responce " I think you'll find that's your fiancé" and that doesn't work. what should I do next is there anything really basic I've missed in the set up?@@AutomateYourLife

If you have that custom routine setup, there should be no problem really. What i would suggest is to troubleshoot the words you’re using. So do something that you’re sure Google wouldn’t use as a keyword or interpret as an actual question. Try trouser routine and then go from there.

It should work just fine. Ifttt doesn’t normally have restrictions on where the applets work.

I'm trying to get my new Sonos One Gen 2 speaker to integrate with my existing Google Home speaker network, but one of two things happened. 1 - I have low IQ and haven't followed your instructions correctly or 2 - the video isn't intended to have a Sonos speaker and Google Home play as a group. Edit and update: After reading others' comments below, Sonos speakers and Google speakers don't play simultaneously. Basically, you can't mix and match :(

You need to take this video down, because it's wrong. Google Assistant doesn't work with ALL Sonos speakers, it only works with Sonos One and Beam. NOT Play:1s. I've checked with Sonos help. If I'm somehow mistaken on this, then please enlighten me, because I can't get it to work.

The video is fine. You’re trying to get Google Assistant on the Sonos? That’s only the two you mention. You’re trying to start and stop your speaker...this still works for me.
