@@vb8428 TV is still amazing. I wish I could compare it to other OLEDs that people say are brighter or LGC3 or C4 but A80L is plenty bright to me. No regrets and love gaming and watching movies on this TV.

This is a great idea. We all understand the newer televisions will be better, but are the differences significant enough to upgrade?

My first oled tv was c9 and I loved it but when I upgraded to S95B the brightness is day and night even gaming felt smoother with 144hz

Right? I l never calibrated my sony a80j. I just put it on the stand, plugged it in and fired it up with minor tweaks in picture settings just like the average consumer would do.

My 77" A80j pooped out after 15 months.

Hey, how are you liking your A80L? I’m literally struggling right now between the A80L and the Bravia 8. Costco still has some 65-inch models like yours. I can’t seem to see much difference between the two, except the Bravia 8 being a bit brighter. My room is not bright, so I’m not sure the extra brightness is worth the $600 difference. How do you like yours? What do you think?

@@kandoundou23 I love my A80L, and agree with you that it isn't worth the extra money for a little bit more brightness. If your room is as bright as my living room, you won't have any issues at all. It's PLENTY bright. The semi-gloss screen handles reflections from indirect lighting well. I either use the Dolby Vision Dark mode on my Apple TV 4K or the Custom mode on my Panasonic UB420 4k Blu ray player, and it just looks incredible. Motion handling is great, colors are vibrant, HDR highlights are so bright it makes me squint at times. Save the $600 and go with the A80L is my recommendation.

Sony have a film studio bro it's in Hollywood. They also develop the best Cameras for movies. It goes a little deeper than games which they know they may lose footing over with unique to console titles in other machines.. Most gamers who need frames would never consider a TV, and casual gamers need just fairly decent refresh rates and the HDR aspect.

I know your reply is 6 months old but HDR OLED gaming on TVs that support 4K/120hz refresh rate has exploded lately. It was already becoming a thing before COVID and now you won't even find a TV brand that doesn't support it. That's very true but you can't have 500 nit highlights and 2 HDMI 2.1 ports in 2023. I'm the biggest Sony fan but the iPAD does 500 nits as well. Granted, Sony can control the brightness better and it can attempt to make highlights bright but it's still going to be massively limited. The C3 is pulling ahead by quite a margin in the EOTF chart and the S95B and S95C are in a different league.

I went through two G2's with severe uniformity and tinting issues before finally landing on the A95K. Couldn't be happier with the choice.

@@zxbc1 Yea...in most cases, absolutely not. I've been driving my AW3423DW hard as my main work, play and everything in between monitor, max brightness, no hidden UI, 8+ hours a day 7 days a week for 14 months now. Still has better uniformity than my LG E8 did out of the box, and no burn in. Not even so much as a shadow where the windows icon has sat in the bottom left corner of the display for like 90% of the monitors life. RTings test was ridiculous and potentially quite flawed, don't take it as gospel.

@@PedroPereira-pg6nq remember that s95b was great. Sony a95k was better but waaay more expensive. Especially that Samsung gives some cash backs discounts etc. Lg c2 costed the same so the choice was obvious until Samsung ruined their tv.

qdoled have more burnin issue, and tizen is slower than webos, with more bug. lg have better motion, and no pink tint. qdoled have a bit of pink tint.

XR makes the image sharper compared to other tvs but after comparing to a reference monitor Vincent found out it was actually closer to reference

I agree on the 590 nits. I had the c2 but it was faulty and had an opportunity to buy this model (A84L at curry’s) on Saturday and for me it feels brighter than the c2 . I sure it’s brighter the 590.

guys brightness measurements on 10% etc screens is on Sonys not whole story in fact on no TV it is; due processor in content measured brightness is very good guide. But believe me for instance my parents C2 is brighter in HDR then my a80j 65" which was measured on 15% window 650 nits in d65 after calibration and is prettyyy veery very bright in HDR in a dark room. I believe for HDR is C3 better pick then A80L or A80K from Sony. Honestly C2 is a hell a great TV and if C3 is a bit better then great TV. Best for me is still G3 so far; great value and jump in performance this year. Enjoy your TVs 🙂

I agree on a few things, I have a 55” A80J, without the EVO panel, and I still absolutely love it, I also own the 65” A95K, S95B, and now a new 77” S95C, for gaming I prefer my 48”C1 for its size, and after I calibrated it, the picture is simply jaw dropping, even by today’s standards… I never use the built in UI on any of my sets, I have 4 Apple TV4K’s, and 2 surround sound systems, and a sound bar, I never use the built in junk sound on these sets, even if some are decent…

I have a 55 inch A80K myself. If you watch Tech Therapy he had Rob Brennan on from Sony. Rob essentially said the A80K caught up to the A90J and that the A80L is suppose to be brighter then A80K. I’m still personally looking at a 65 A90J or 83 especially if price drops. Or an A95K or 95L. Only LG I’d consider C3 and G3.,

Yep but only one thing annoying me , my calibrator omitted Dolby Vision- 20 points colour cal , claiming that it affects calibrations in SDR ? A90J has common SDR/DV 20p interface ? WTF and i believed him 😢 so what is the true with this model ?

@@spookyman9994 i'm using X90J on PC and PS5. Just got the TV (SONY replaced my faulty X90F for X90J) and now i'm curious about what vince said for A80L and since both use same processor and chipset it got me confused since he said on X90J it does resolve full 444 chroma...

@@sermerlin1 sadly the ps5 doesnt support full 444 because its hdmi 2.1 is caped at 32gb while the xbox series x/s support 40gb which does in fact support full 444 . hope it helps .

G3 being so bright now appears to have lost its 3D tonality , something about the image just looks *off to me. As of right now the best looking image 2023 is any tv using QD-Oled and secondly I really like the way these Sony tvs look, except a few things. I do not like this matter like screen, prefer the glossy like the A80J 77” had, also the bezel on screen is too wide, where as Samsung/LG go almost all the way to the edge. Overall I’m really close to buying this tv, like the motion and superior processing that is leagues better than Samsung and slightly better than LG

Get the older model instead, it is using the same exact mediatek processor with same exact ports and the improvements in brightness are not even significant compared to the last year model. Here in US, the prices are crazy for Sony TVs.

If you watch last year's A80K review it's virtually identical to to this one except for the gaming features which seems like a very minor difference.

He did say that this year's model adds Dolby Atmos support. But that shouldn't be a problem if you stream with an Apple Tv 4K 2nd-gen. or newer.

This video already demonstrates that the A80L is a small incremental upgrade vs last year's model. You already have your answer. Buy last year's model if it has received a big enough price drop since launch.

Processing and motion is more important than brightness to me. Especially if you are watching the TV in a dedicated dark room, the brightness is more than enough unless you want your retinas fried

Actually, I would try to get the A90J in 55 inch. It is even better than A80J and has the heatsink and around 100 nits brighter in HDR. I've seen it advertise for $1399 on Best Buy.

I believe my only options right now are the A80j 55, LG G3 55 and C2 55 and 65, as those are the ones that the store here has in stock, and im able to get them with a significan discount and financing. I believe I can get the G3 for an equivalent to $1200 US, which I think its pretty good!

Yeah I’m in the same boat. I have multiple devices that use 2.1 now and I don’t want to keep switching. Probably gonna get the G3 which will be awesome.

Just see them in person and decide. A TV is about the image, and ports are secondary. I'm not too fat or lazy to pull a plug out the back of my paper-thin TV but some might be. I've been an LG fanboy for many years but noticed something has changed with the Sony picture and it's damn exciting and un-ignorable in person. Things POP unlike other brands. Bravia Core is dope idea too

I am curious about this too. I am looking to buy an 83" OLED. I was leaning toward the LG C3 for it's brightness. However, I've read that the 83" Sony A80L has the heatsink. Would that mean that the 83" is potentially brighter than the 77" or 65"?

Nothing fishy at all, there is a lot at play here that you apparently don't understand. All of what you're referencing can be explained by the logarithmic perception of brightness, the fact that most HDR content doesn't take full advantage of QD OLED's color strengths yet, and efficiency differences, heat management and the amount of pixels being lit at different test patches. If there was anything amiss with all of that, Vincent and others would have pointed it out ages ago. If you have even a moderate amount of knowledge about this stuff though, it's not fishy at all.

It's this way, to make hdr better. There is no oled that can push more than 250 nits on all screen! Even the mini led can't push 1500 nits full screen, probably more like half, around 750!

@@Petrakeas yeah game motion plus is such a underrated feature, makes bfi obsolete in my opinion. Frustrating why Sony and LG can’t implement a feature like this game mode, bfi kills brightness and hdr unfortunately.

I work with the A9H every day and I've spent a lot of time watching all kinds of content on it in a bright environment, if you want I could answer any questions you have about it? Here is a summary: The gradation handling is not great, the opposite of Sony really, so poor sources will have undefeatable banding (you can use noise reduction but it scrubs away detail). Motion handling is A LOT better than last years A9G but still has issues with keeping up with scene-changes, if you don't plan to use motion interpolation then thats less relevant ofc. The upscaling is good but not even great, let alone close to Sony. The tonemapping isn't as good as Sony and requires you to dial contrast down a lot to stop clipping highlights too much, this means you will lose brightness for accuracy, or have to accept a bit of clipping to keep it really bright and popping. The reasons I would buy it over a Sony A80K/A90J (It probably won't be around by the time this A80L turns up) are for audio quality, its a bit thinner (49mm vs 53mm) and I believe it supports better VRR than the Sony. The sound system has 2x upfiring speakers, 4x forward firing drivers, a subwoofer and even a clone of Acoustic Surface called Sonic Screen. Sonic Screen works very well to improve dialogue clarity and give that enhanced connection of sound and picture. The Dolby Atmos and DTS Virtual X upmixing of audio sources seems to illicit positive responses from 90% of people I demo it to and it gives a good fake surround sound experience and excellent feeling of height in the audio. The subwoofer is 20W but it has a toggleable psychoacoustic effect called "Waves" which is very impressive at improving bass and its very loud and clear if combine it with the "Theatre" audio preset (which is recommended if you want to increase dialogue clarity and bass), though I would recommend actually turning the bass slider down to -2 or even lower to stop the subwoofer overextending itself in ultra heavy bass scenes/music. You could also just turn off Theatre for those times as well and its not that often it happens, its a specific frequency thats being heavily boosted by "Waves" and "Theatre" and it goes far too far, most content is bassy, clear and not farty so though its not a massive concern anyway. Note: Sonic Screen contains only 1x 10w actuator vs the 2x in the Sony A80K/A90J (The A80J actually has 3x, like the AF9 had, which is nice if you can still get it) so it doesn't quite have as good effect of panning of sound within the screen, though the speakers are the top and bottom (when virtual upmixing is on) will pan the sound so it kind of tricks your brain into thinking the screen speakers are doing the same. Really its all about the sound quality, 4mm thickness difference and gaming stuff so if you don't plan to game on it, aren't wall mounting it and most importantly are going to use an external sound system then I would personally buy an A90J, A80J or A80K instead, in that order. I can sell A9H confidently to most people as the best option, because I think differences in image quality over a Sony OLED and especially LG OLED are definitely worth it to get the more impressive sound system for most people. This is because your average joe doesn't want a soundbar/systems, they want a clean setup on the wall with nothing else. Let me know if there is anything else you are curious about.

I follow the TV industry very closely. If the Hisense a9h isn't a big leap in improvement to my Panasonic. I am interested in the Samsung s95c QD-OLED. I hear picture quality is a step up from regular oled. Thanks again

​ @Adrian Davies Your FZ952B has a better picture than the A9H imo, I would wait for possible Pana QD-OLED or get Sony A95K/L. I think the S95B has an amazing panel but build quality is rubbish and I'm generally not really a big Samsung fan due to them doing weird stuff which makes it hard to make the picture accurate, game mode being particularly weird. It remains to be seen if S95C will fix the build issues, but I reckon the sound quality will be really bad since its 11mm thick. If you don't want to pay the price for the A95K/L then I would keep your Pana than upgrade to QD-OLED via Samsung, just wait until the technology is more mature and cheaper.

@@Kuranghi thank you for the advice. I wish plasma panels hadn't been discontinued. I understand the high energy it used and cost of production. But it was the best TV for motion I've ever seen.

@@asafblasbergvideographer Possibly to increase the life of the panel and prevent image retention. The "master series" oleds often come with a heatsink so they can be pushed harder. e.g A90J, A95K, A95L
