The Sony 24-50mm f/2.8 G lens is incredibly sharp, has lightning fast autofocus, and is super compact and lightweight. "But David, what about the Sony 24-70 f/2.8 GM"? Well, compared to the mark 1, the 24-50mm is one-third the price, it's half the weight, and SHARPER!

At that price point I think that'd be a fantastic carry lens for traveling especially with how lightweight it is! I'm leaning towards giving that 24-50 a try!

I think you’d love it! The price point makes it so much more accessible than the 24-70 f/2.8 GM II, which would be my other consideration

Interesting focal length. And to be honest, I’m tempted to get it as a 1 lens kit for travel. However, I already have the 16-35 GMii cause I like the ultrawides 🙂 that extra reach to 50mm is tempting though…great review David!

I'd go 20-70 personally. I had that lens for a while and you can get nice bokeh at 70mm even at F4. I don't think this lens has much of an advantage over it.

Not sure if you decided yet, but I own both. The 24-50 is just that much little bit smaller and lighter making it a better match for the A7Cii. Plus it's 2.8 which makes a big difference in the real world. The 20-70 is a great lens for the FX3/A7Siii.

Right? I truly believe it’s going to become an underrated lens because the 24-70 is a common go-to, but I think it’s SO GOOD for travel/street/etc

I had the original 24-70mm GM lens. But, I sold it before the 24-70mm GM II was released. I got tired of the size and weight. I do now own the 24-70mm GM II. But, I'm thinking about buying the 24-50mm G or 20-70mm G to use as a travel lens.

The GM II weight difference really is noticeable! And the 24-50 is pretty fantastic, it’s a great choice if you don’t mind the lack of the 50-70 end of the focal range.

Tamron 20-40 is a great lens, but this is a better lens for more money. Tamron pros: - Has 20mm end which is perfect wideness for stuff like selfie vlogging - It’s a little smaller and a little lighter Sony pros: - The image quality is superior - It’s a first party lens meaning you’ll get better AF and Stabilization

I was too...but somebow the Tamron in my hand just doesn't have the great feel and look of the Sony g lenses, I will pair this with my Sony 20mm 1.8 so not worried about losing the 20mm on the Tamron at all, and with my 55mm 1.8 it's the perfect set for me

The 20-70 f4 probably makes more sense for many people. Because 20mm is much nicer for landscapes (where you don't use f2.8 anyways in most cases) and also for portraits 70mm f4 gives the nicer look than 50mm f2.8 in my opinion (much less background makes it appear more smooth). So the 24-50 only makes sense where low-light is priority. I'd rather crank up ISO one step and have the much more versatile lens which can create more interesting looks for landscapes and portraits.

I *mostly* agree, but I end up shooting indoors a LOT wherever I go, or in the evenings, so the f/2.8 for me is pretty necessary

I think I'm still leaning to the 20-70 F4 for travel. I'd like to sell my 24 1.4, 35 1.4 & 50 1.4 for this, but 1.4...LOL

Yeah… 1.4 > 2.8… Not even just for bokeh, but lowlight and getting bokeh when the subject is farther away so you can still get some subject separation. I think 20-70 (or even 20-50) is a perfect focal length but F4 is so limiting when shooting indoors or in the evenings when traveling (or when you want to blur out a distracting background)

@stkuj yeah not sure why they chose a 3-month gap between pre-order and shipping 😅 hopefully some more unique and interesting lenses! (Or gimme a 24 1.4 mk 2)
