Yes, I can definitely see a difference. Tldr: I believe that the Canon has a more muted, classic look. The Sony has slightly more clarity, more global contrast, very slightly cleaner bokeh, perhaps a bit more color saturation, lower vignetting and perhaps very slightly more sharpness. The deciding factor in choosing between them will however obviously be determined by what camera system you have or want to have. The biggest differences in your pictures when using these lenses, especially in regards to sharpness results, will come from the camera body you use them with: the color science differences are definitely visible and is up to personal taste, but the autofocus performance of the A1 is objectively more accurate and reliable for portraits than any Canon camera. However, the R5 would probably be closer to the performance of the A1 than the R6 used in this video. The most visible differences between the lenses themselves is the vignetting, but when zoomed in I could easily see differences in clarity (local/detail contrast) and global contrast. Again, the Canon overall renders more like a classic lens, while the Sony is more "perfect". The least obvious aspect of the "classical look" is that the Canon has a very slight swirly rendering towards the edges (as seen with the cat's eye problem) while the Sony bokeh looks marginally "cleaner" (almost imperceptibly so). More importantly, the Sony seems to have more clarity and perhaps also more sharpness, which points towards a more modern"look. While sharpness of the lenses might be very close, the Canon camera missed focus more often: the eye lashes and critical areas are sharper in basically every picture on the Sony. The Sony lens also looks like it has more contrast, unless of course there was a difference in editing, and it seems to me like both colors and contrast looks more muted in the Canon pictures (look at the saturation of the flowers in every picture), which again adds to the modern vs classic differences. Furthermore, the Canon has more vignetting, which is most visible in the first picture comparison: the chair and table area in the right corner and the flowers in the left corner is much darker on the Canon, which obviously increases contrast in the corners and could fool you into believing that Canon is more contrasty overall, but even though the image corners on the Sony is brighter and less contrasty there is definitely more contrast in the mid-section on the Sony (look at the hair of the bride). If you would correct the vignetting on the Canon I believe the corners would have more contrast on the Sony, and this is obvious if you look at the other images. One more note about bokeh: while the Sony might be cleaner, its higher clarity, color saturation might make out of focus objects pop more and be more distracting (as with the flowers in the first image comparison) and less vignetting might(!) also make the image corners more visible and lead attention away from centered subjects in some instances. I was also surprised to see that the Sony camera had a more warm orange rendering than the Canon, since in my experience with a7riii and a7iii Sony leans more towards a colder look.

This is a much appreciated effort. And like you said no one's cross shopping these two lenses, but comparisons like this help us visualise how premium lenses with complex optical designs tackle optical corrections while not sacrificing tonal performances, a.k.a. micro contrast, it's an enjoyable competition.

Cameras are crazy good these days!! Only smaller or bigger nuances for specific users makes them different. A1 is a beast of a camera and shooting it feels superior to R6 in any way, but when it comes to an image itself, both produce beautiful photos paired with lenses like 50/1.2.

I like the way the colors render more on the Canon (although this may be due to the body more than the lens). That said, it's not as sharp as the Sony (although it's actually very flattering for this type of photography I must say), has more longitudinal chromatic aberration, has pretty bad onion-ringing in the bokeh. Pretty impressive what Sony did in a smaller, lighter, quieter, and cheaper lens.

Don't minimize the necessity of videos comparing lenses with the same focal lengths from different manufacturers. It is not automatic, that people are going to go with one or the other because they are already a Canon or Sony photographer. Me personally, I was solely a Canon fanboy until it was a requirement for my concert photography to have a camera with a silent shutter. Canon was dragging its feet and would not come-out with any new truly professional level mirrorless cameras. So, for concert photography I jumped ship to the Sony a9, when it first came out. I still used my Canon 70-200 f2.8 with a metabones adapter because at that time there were not many Sony lenses. I continue to be extremely impressed by Sony's progress and I am gradually switching over to Sony. It takes time. It's not like you can just use a DSLR lens (natively) on a mirrorless camera anyway. That transition alone made me re-evaluate whether I wanted to continue to stay with Canon or not. But Sony's lenses are consistently faster, quieter and with a higher number of aperture blades for (in my opinion) better sharpness at lower f-stops and better bokeh. So, videos like yours just solidify the decision to keep on the path of switching to Sony. I am looking-out for the new Sony a9 III (or whatever it will be called). I decided not to go for the a9 II but wait for the a9 III, as I didn't feel the upgrades in the a9 II warranted putting-out the extra cash. ...My understanding, however, is that the Sony 50mm f1.2 is actually a 47mm lens. Why did they do that?

Thank you for review! You choice very good fotos for comparison. What I could say - I really see the differences between two. Hey man, first of all ducking awesome photos! That has to be said, coz the lens or camera is irrelevant. Obviously you can’t go wrong with either, both are awesome I have eos r and 50RF. But honestly canon gear is so freaking expensive I’m considering going Sony. Is there any chance you share couple raw files, KZfaq compression kind of sucks. Also I’m very curious about something else, did you notice any difference in exposure values. Is the Sony T stop pretty much the same as canon. I really impressed with Sony pulling out this lens with their small mount. But was wondering if the T stop value matches the one on the canon. Btw I also see the cats eye and little bit of onion rings on the canon. Usually i notice on the R with electronic shutter I get more of then. Works noticeably better with mechanical shutter and honestly at 1.2 I never really seen this amount of cats eye and especially onion rings(they are not extreme but noticeable).

I own both set ups, never compared them one to one, but shot both at the same time. I prefer Sony because of it's lenses (small) and silent shutter. But if I compare RF50mm 1.2 and GM 50mm 1.2 I find RF has better 3d pop and it's pure magic, while Sony is stupidly good with fast autofocus and slightly lighter. This has been like that for years for all sony lenses. If you have big hands (fat fingers) it might create issues for you. I personally never had any issues with any sony lenses because my fingers are quite thin but it's something noteworthy to point out if you are not familiar with sony lenses. So for some people it's an issue, others like me don't even notice it at all. On this 50mm 1.2 they managed to make the gap bigger than on their older sony e mount lenses, so it probably won't be an issue for most people. Best would be to go into a shop and try a typical sony lense out yourself. Only this can answer the question for sure since everyone has different hands.

@MagicWeddingPhotographer
@MagicWeddingPhotographer 3 жыл бұрын
You might want to look at my 50GM review as I provide some samples (they’re linked in the first comment), but apart from that: - I’ve used 55 for the last three years, it’s sharp, accurate, fast and super compact. It has weird flare, like a stripe of light coming from the top of the screen and metal build is easily scratched; I’d say it’s a good choice for the price - 50GM, you gain quite a lot of light, and 1.2 vs 1.8 makes actually visible difference in the image, the background blur is nicer, and with its sharpness and the af speed you can actually use it at 1.2 for everything. I prefer GM design, the materials doesn’t seem to show wear that much, you get also aperture ring and two custom buttons and mf/af switch (55 has none). In my opinion - decision comes down wether you want to use that 1.2 a lot or not. It will definitely look nicer, more separation subject/background but question is - is that what you want/need? Hope that helps!

Not necessarily superior. A 20MP camera compared to a 50MP camera? You do realise the lens can resolve more detail than the sensor in this particular instance, so do the comparison using an R5 with 45MP.
@cooloox

@@MagicWeddingPhotographer Nope, unless you have a reference image, you won't necessarily get great colours. Irene Rudnyk did a 4 way comparison (RP, R, R6, R5) and edited each image individually (not side by side to match one camera to another). The EOS R had terrible colours compared to the other 3. Yes, she could have matched all 4 cameras by using one as a reference, but by honestly just editing each camera image individually, as though that was her only camera, the results are not even close.

I am surprised by the strong onion ring effect on the Canon at 8:30. Sony uses an extremely high precision process for their aperture blades (they state the new high precision numbers on their website for the lense if anyone is interested in all the technical numbers) which makes it very clean. I assumed that canon would do better here but actually the Sony one with their high precision process and XA elements produces that way cleaner.

@@iambeautiful8190 It's tough to note that with the youtube resolution and compression. But for some reason the tie looks very detailed on the sony and it's lost on the canon, maybe it has something to do with moire on the pattern. The sony has a very slight orange tint noteable on the faces and floweres (the orange and red on the flowers). The canon skin color here looks slightly better due to that shift here but the sony has slightly more color pop so to speak. Obviously both can be changed in post with raw files. But it's mostly with these lenses like this. Even if you put budget 1.8 options next to it, with the low resolution and compression on youtube the overall impression is mostly very similar until you really zoom in. However, at home you would look at the smaller details or if you print it out. If all you do is provide a low res version on instagram all of these lenses are mostly overkill. :-)

@@andreas7278 Yes Sony is sharper I can tell from this video, but I like the separation of people on RF50mm 1.2 more. Also I couldn't tell bokeh was bad on my RF even on a 34inch screen, like totally not important to me. Maybe the lens was focused a bit differently as with sony tie pops more and with Canon suit looks better. But anyway anyone who shot RF50mm can't complain about sharpness or I got a perfect copy and they got a shitty deal. I am sure Sony is a perfectly corrected lens, but I am still on hold with character compared to Canon and wonder if it's good enough to upgrade my zeiss 50mm 1.4 to 50mm 1.2 Sony.

@@iambeautiful8190 I totally agree, especially since it's youtube resolution and just one comparison shot. A different texture, color rendition etc on another foto might make another impression. I just tried to see if I can make out any differences since it's, both are playing at a high level. Mostly if you only look at the overal rendering from a distance further away they will look mostly the same and only if you watch more closely you see differences in handling of chromatic aberration, slight differences in bokeh rendering etc

It took them years to create such a lense and it’s the only of it’s kind. A 50mm is the easiest to create we will have to see if there ever will be more. But as it currently stands I feel like there is no competition in lenses.
