You should check out the Sony 70-350, a great light, compact lens with great image quality. It's made for APS-C. I love it. It ridiculously portable.

Thank you for the tip!!! I really like as much reach as I can get in a lens for wildlife for the most part - 600 or 800mm is what makes me most happy. I have hiked with some heavy lenses in the past - uncomfortable but the images were worth it. I do have to say though that the Sony glass and quality is exceptional so I will have to give that a try!!! 🙏💖🤗

I do need to shoot more macro. My only true macro lens is manual everything but it has nice optics. I know a lot of people compare the RF100-500 with the Sony 100-600 but I don’t think that is the best comparison. The Canon RF100-500 is kind of an odd duck. A little shorter, 1/3 stop slower, much lighter, and an amazing close focus ability. To me the Sony is more in line with the 150-600 Sigma and Tamron lenses. Probably better optically but still has a longer minimum focus distance. When I was using the Sigma I would miss shots because the bird was too close. In any case, it is good to know their are options out there for people to choose from that they will happy with. They can pick their favorite brand and find something within their budget.
@JonnyPink65

Exactly. I get questions/comments all the time about weight or cost. If someone is looking for reach with considerations of weight and cost - the RF 100-400 is an amazing option. So is Canons F11 lenses (the RF 800 F11 just blew my mind at how sharp it is even with its limitations.. and super light). Other ask about reach and faster lenses - the Tamron and Sigma are great options but don't adapt to the RF system as well as the native EF glass - so the RF 100-400 or F11 lenses are still a better option. I did not care for the Sony lens on the Sony body I had in the past, but I really LOVED it on the A6700. The RF 100-500 is an odd beast - you are correct, but it is expensive for most of the folks that get into photography. Sharp as can be, the minimum focus distance makes it an absolute winner.... but again, the price. There is truly something for everyone and every budget!!! 🙏💖🤗

Thanks for this video! I own both the a6700 and the r7. I can tell you for what I shoot and my experience tells me the AF performance with the a6700 and the 200-600 Sony lens is very hard to beat. That said I only have the 100-400 and 800mm for the R7 because they don't have a 200-600 currently. I hope Canon releases one soon. The video features of the a6700 puts it miles above the r7 in my eyes. Either way you can't go wrong though really. Cheers.
@JonnyPink65
@JonnyPink65 8 ай бұрын
You can't go wrong with either for sure. The Sony set up is a little less expensive, but for video I prefer the Canon color. For photos I think I actually like what Sony has done to the raw file color science. I have the V1 EF 100-400 and the 800 F11. I also have my Canon 600 F4 but really did not compare that to the Sony as I did not think it would be a fair comparison. I also like the price of the Sony set up as well. To get the Canon RF 100-500 that is super expensive on its own also puts it a little out of reach for some. The only thing I found was the exposure inconsistency shooting birds in flight using the Sony. It could have been a setting that I missed and since I only had it for a couple of days, I can not blame the camera - it is my inexperience with the Sony system. Both are really awesome!!! 🙏🤗💖

@@PhotoGearFun 100% The wedding I just shot, I had my R and a rented R5. I had my EF 70-200 III on one body and the 24-70 on the other. I shot 90% with the 70-200 and the video is just as creamy dreamy as can be. For my style of fading into the background and being invisible, it works. I had a 24mm and an 85 with my just in case but those sat in the bag. For my bugs and such that I shoot - the R7 and eventually the A6700 too, but pro stuff - R5, eventually eh R5II when it comes out or the R1 depending on specs. But bugs and birds - hard to go wrong with either set up! 🤗

Great video, would you recommend the a6700 and then tamron 150-500mm (Sony 200-600mm out of budget) over the canon r7 and the rf 100-400mm?
@JonnyPink65
@JonnyPink65 5 ай бұрын
Wow, that is a tough question. I am personally a fan of native lenses over third party such as Tamron or Sigma and I have use both - other have a different opinion. As far as Canon over Sony.... both are fantastic crop sensor bodies. I personally as a Canon shooter, prefer the R7 and think it has more capabilities but is a little more expensive. On the other hand, Canon has the RF 100-400 that is a light lens, inexpensive and takes great shots. -Sony has nothing in that range that competes. I can not tell you which is better or which to buy. What are you looking for - weight, cost, mind-blowing clarity? The pro lenses that are super sharp are super expensive for a reason, but you can always build up to those. I will say that the magic of an amazing photo comes from the passion of the person behind the camera. The camera is just a tool that allows you to share your vision!! 🙏💖🤗

To emphasize: these lenses are wonderful, but for me, so impractical, as an international traveler (I take off monthly to different countries). These lenses are simply too heavy and long for me to carry! Instead, I compromise with the Sony 70-350 apsc (full frame equivalent to 525mm). It's light and tiny (maybe 6 inches long), and cheap-$800-899.
@JonnyPink65
@JonnyPink65 8 ай бұрын
That makes perfect practical sense. I get asked questions about the different lenses and set ups I use - weight, sharpness, cost etc. My best response is always is that it is a personal choice based on how we each shoot and what we look for in a lens. If I were fortunate to travel - I hate how inconvenient it is these days. Too many rude people - I would probably choose a lens camera set up just like you. Because the places I shoot are all within driving distance, I take which ever I am in the mood for at that moment. - short or long. 🙏💖🤗

You a fan of pictures of birds from behind and what is with the exposure jumping around so much from image to image? I found the R7 AF way too unreliable.
@JonnyPink65
@JonnyPink65 8 ай бұрын
For me, what I find is my Canon R7, R5 are consistent throughout when I shoot a burst of a bird in flight - always. What I noticed is that the Sony is not but I can not stress enough that is most likely me and a setting that I missed. It is possible that the processing in the camera is slow, but more likely, it is is a setting. I did not have the camera long enough to get deep into the menus but I will when I buy one. For the most part, I loved this Sony set up for both macro and wildlife. it is sharp, has a ton of detail, beautiful color, and the tracking puts the Nikon Z9 to shame.... but I have said that about the R7 and how that out performed the Z9 as well. No set up is perfect, but for a relatively inexpensive set up for wildlife - I am impressed. I have had about 5 Differnt Sony cameras over the years and this is the first one that has impressed me. I want one!! Not perfect, but nothing is. 🙏💖🤗
@duncangroenewald
@duncangroenewald 8 ай бұрын
@@JonnyPink65 Certainly agree the tracking one either puts the Z9 to shame - but R7 electronic shutter has too much distortion for my liking and mechanical is not blackout free. R5 is also not great for things like swallows, distortion is also quite frequently evident. My main camera is the A1 so I guess I am a little spoilt with performance. It is certainly taking an awful long time for Canon to release a high resolution stacked sensor camera, I wonder why.
@JonnyPink65
@JonnyPink65 8 ай бұрын
@@duncangroenewald You are spot on!! I will have to try the "older" Sony A1 LOL! I shoot in mechanical as it minimizes the rolling shutter, and I deal with the black out. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Nikon color, and Canon comes in at a close second. In the past, I was not a fan of Sony raw processing but this A6700 just blew me away with the color depth in the raw files. For me, that sells me - I LOVE color depth.... and the tracking... and the clarity. I will rent the A1 when I own the 6700 and 200-600. Per your recommendation, I hope to be as impressed with the COLOR as I am with the A6700!! 💖🤗

What I experienced is that the Sony stabilization is no where near as good as I get from my Canon cameras., but then again, that is most likely me and my settings. I am not familiar with the Sony set up and only having it for a couple of days, I did not dig in as deep into the menus as I would/will if/when I own one. I stabilized that to minimize my shake. Adobe does OK with stabilization in most cases but. It did struggle as the background was also moving in the wind posing a challenge to the software. 🙏💖🤗 PS Overall - I LOVE the Sony set up!!

@JonnyPink65 7 ай бұрын
No worries at all. The answer is neither and both. They each have advantages and disadvantages - there is no system that is perfect. If you watch my videos, I will never say this is the lens or camera to buy and I dont think that any of the good reviewers would say that anything is the best. I can get some of the same results with an old DSLR and a pro-level prime 600mm, but the newer AF makes it so much easier. We each pick a set up based on weight, price or what system we have been using for a long time - it is expensive to change I have used Sony and owned a couple and always HATED the flat raw files - until the A6700. The depth in the raw files is more like the Nikon that has always been my favorite for color. I use Canon because the package as a whole is superior for ME even over the Nikon Z9 that I though as far as AF, lags far behind the the Canon R7, R5 AND the A6700. I only owned that for about 6 months - the biggest camera purchase regret I have ever had and that is from someone who was a die hard Nikon guy until the R5 came out. Others say I am wrong and that is OK - it is all personal. Both the R7 and A6700 have rolling shutter - I know that so I work around it. They Sony is smaller and may fit in one persons hand better than another's. The Sony as a package cost less, but the Canon has a superior AF and a bigger buffer. The choice as to which is better is really up to you, your wants, how you shoot and your budget. For me, I want both but holding off on buying the Sony to add to my collection until I see if Canon does announce the 200-800 or what comes up next. I LOVED shooting the A6700 and was impressed where I did not think I would be. I show what each can do and leave the decision to you!!! I do thank you for watching and commenting 🙏🤗💖
