We are sure many of you have recorded underwater video, with this camera, and don’t understand why the colors can be off or completely wrong. It turns out Sony’s industry leading A7Siii camera has a major design flaw with its Custom White Balance setting affecting underwater film making. Sony is actually changing your manual custom white balance setting, while filming, and frequently doing it incorrectly. The flaw is so egregious it has complicated our underwater filmmaking and destroyed countless recordings we could have used to produce our KZfaq channel. Sony has confirmed that they are changing your manual custom white balance during filming, often switching to color reproduction suitable for land and not underwater, often making some colors completely wrong. It makes no difference what color profile you use. In this video we will show you clips from our and a channel subscriber's Sony A7siii of the abrupt, flawed, color switching that occurs. We will also show you an alternative camera feature, in action, that we now rely on to adjust white balance. Without this setting we would have had to sell thousands of dollars worth of Sony based camera equipment. Watch the video and find out what that feature is and see it in action. If you have purchased this camera we urge you to use this feature.
This was our first experience with Sony support. We went to extremes to help Sony including: sending recordings, suggesting firmware changes, getting other underwater film makers to help test a potential firmware update. Despite our efforts, Sony's lack of response made us feel like they were giving us busy work to go away while at the same time harming our ability to produce content. Based on our experience, should we continue to use Sony? We would love to hear your comments.
What is most important is that these tech videos help you and so until Sony fixes their custom white balance problem we recommend that you use this alternative Sony A7Siii feature to get better underwater recordings with this camera. It helped us tremendously.

I used the automatic underwater white balance setting and the colors are correct. The white balance is close with minor tweaks in post. All the night footage were filmed using the Sony A7s3 with this white balance setting. Out of the gate it is has gotten the most views of any video we released. Some of the day clips were shot with the Sony and I saw one with the purple to blue color switch on a sponge where custom white balance was used. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rMCeo8-B3uCYZ58.html

Hi, Thanks for the video! I'm using the A7s iii underwater since late 2020. The custom white balance (and unevenly saturated color channels) is in general a big issue on this system, however, I get good results when putting lot's of effort in post (filming in XAVC HS 4k, Slog3). The issue you described bothered me for a couple of times at the beginning, only with wide angle tho. But it didn't happened again for a long time! Any chance that it might have already been fixed with one of the firmware updates?

Hey there, thank you for the video, you re basically the only one on the internet talking about this. I have a question for you or anyone willing to answer: I have recently purchased a Sony A7siii and have dived with it my last trip, I have only experienced the switch in WB during video once out of 1000 or so clips but my problem is in photos. Randomly a lot of my photos have drastically different white balance in the ARW raw file compared to the jpg file. I have also noted two different problems, sometimes all blues are changed to purples, other times when WB is set manually and the file is imported into Lightroom the app only allows -150,+150 range in the tint slider and cannot match the difficult underwater WB conditions. Both these result in barely editable images Have you encountered this problem? If so, have you found a solution? I am willing to share the files if you are interested, let me know Cheers

I have not but I shoot exclusively video. I think one of the issues in Bonaire is we have lots of purple tube sponges so when they turn blue you notice. Now I did experience a ferry basslet come out as blue and yellow instead of purple and yellow. I was shooting macro. To add only a marginal improvement I added a red curve with the highest mid tone at the center (a red tint) using underwater auto WB. I think it is because I was close and the lights were out farther. It looks like the Sony uses the light source to detect how to adjust the white balance. I had not seen this before I shot in macro. Blue/ purple seems to be a challenge for their algorithm. You will see the ferry basslet in our next video. This was the first time I shot macro with this camera so I have to play with it and the lighting more.

Thank you so much. I have been using Sony for many years, primarily for underwater photography and started on the A7siii, Ninja V in early 2021 for video. Been manual white balancing, using manual mode and getting all kinds of strange colours to the point of loosing patience with the system. At least I now know it’s not just me. Thanks for putting this video together and hope Sony addresses the problem.. I’ll try underwater auto WB next time {usually in 2-5m vis, using strong Keldan lights, would it make sense to keep the red filter on the lens, or deal with colour correction in post if using the underwater auto WB setting?)
@ADiversLife
@ADiversLife 2 жыл бұрын
You are most welcome. I have 15000 lumen big blue lights. So, like you I have strong lighting. My recommendation is that you add a red filter only in post. If you are up close with lights you don’t need a red filter. Also red filters reduce the amount of light that hits the sensor. In post you have finer control of your red filter. I use the Premier Pro fast color corrector followed by white balance fine tuning. This is how I work in post with underwater auto. Works great! - finally

Interesting. I can't see any reason why this would only happen underwater though, do you see the same thing happening with your camera when filming using custom white balance on land? One thing you might want to try is defining one of the buttons that you can operate in the enclosure to AWB Lock, that way you can tell the camera to not change WB until you're ready to do so when using AWB.

Thanks for making this video. I will have my A7SIII system in hand in a week or so here in Fiji and I will share my findings here as well. Question - are you using auto ISO or changing the iso while filming? I previously shot with the Sony A7SII and it would shift the white balance if the iso changed while filming and looked very similar to what you are seeing. Cheers

Hi, thank you for commenting. No, I always use manual ISO. I exclusively shoot in manual mode with the exception of the underwater auto water white balance out of necessity. For the most part it gets me in close enough where I can do tweaks in post. That includes night and day fillming and for both wide angle and macro. I hope that helps and thank you for that information on automatic ISO.

@@ADiversLife Very excited to try the new A7SIII system. I have been digging online to try and figure out what is happening with the white balance and from what I can source it sure seems like the camera is changing some exposure setting and thus shifting the white balance. If you are in Full Manual Mode I would think the camera would not be able to do this. I would be interested to see if setting up one of the Custom buttons to create an AEL (Auto Exposure Lock) toggle would stop the change. This way you can set the white balance before recording, then you turn on the toggle and that should lock all settings, then you start recording. This way if say a bright light enters the image during the recording your overall balance should remain constant. There is also an AWB Lock, (Auto White Balance Lock) feature available for your custom buttons as well that should lock the white balance while filming but that requires you to use auto white balance. Hope you can get this sorted and get back to making some beautiful underwater videos. Cheers

Thanks Rich for these great video's on the 7SIII. Do you have recent news on the white balance problems ? I'm close to buying the whole set-up (Nauticam, S7III, domes, lenses), but this whole topic of custom white balance problems (at that price/ investment) makes me doubt the whole thing. Out of curiosity : when you're not using the lights and shooting with ambient light, do you use a red filter in front of the lens (this was something I always did : custom white balance & red filter in front of the lens (in a gates housing) for best results).
@ADiversLife
@ADiversLife Жыл бұрын
Hi Joe, Sony made a firmware update where they appear to have fixed the white balance auto switching. I was still finding the custom white balance off so I continue to use their underwater auto white balance. It gets me close enough that I make a correction in post. I have yet to see situations, where using the white balance correction on the camera gets you spot on and I always do final corrections in post. I have only had one incident where auto white balance was a problem and that was shooting up at an eagle ray as the sun was setting and it got a red tint where I could not get it out all the way. As for red filters in the camera I never use them ever. The fact is the amount of red you have in your filter is seldom perfect and if you have one that is too dark you lose quality. I am also changing depth quite often and having the right red filter for the depth is unreliable. I add the red in post followed by white balance correction.

@@Joeri2K3 you are welcome Joe. Keep in mind this camera is a low light beast. So it does really good even with a bit less light. Pretty much everyone on Bonaire shoots video without physical red filters. The thing to learn is how to do post editing and use continuous autofocus on wide and shots only when you have really clear water or if you are shooting macro and you know you can keep the subject in front of the camera. Sony’s caf is very good but too good at times. If there is stuff in the water it can hunt to it quickly. Give serious consideration to buying that ninja display as the Sony display is small and subject to sun glare and you can’t tell if you are in focus at times during the day.

@@Joeri2K3 Hi Joe, I am shooting all the time and I need to put out super high quality content. My take on this is that you should do the following first. - start with an IPhone (they take great video) - buy a good housing and powerful lights - get a good video editing package and learn how to do post production editing Your video quality will go through the roof and the iPhone shoots hdr video. If you do all that, which is many thousands less expensive than my rig, and then want to upgrade your rig then you will have the end to end tool skills to make incredible content that a more expensive rig will only make better. Also the bigger rig is a lot to carry.

Hi Pablo, Sony issued a firmware update that seems to fix the switching but the white balance is off. I was getting yellow sponges to come out orange. I have had to resort to underwater auto white balance and that has been working fine even though, as I stated in the video, I prefer to shoot all manual. When I switched to underwater auto the colors came out correctly. Canon has better color science but they need to work on low light. Yes, I was out on Bonaire’s second reef, at 110 ft, and there were 2 sleeping nurse sharks. They did not like lights. I shut them off. Squid don’t like lights either. :-)

I hate to use any AUTO setting while working on professional jobs. I don't know why. Apparently in the latest firmware fix they repaired the WB switching but I set the white balance underwater, filmed a yellow sponge, and it came out orange. I understand. I tossed my white fins. Somebody told me that you had to redo it 3-4 times on the A7s3, using white fins to set the WB, but I did not see that. For the A7S3 there is an underwater auto white balance. I use that. It is not perfect, by any stretch, but it gets me close enough to fix the white balance in Adobe Premier Pro. Another observation is that if I am filming really shallow like near the surface (less than a meter) switch to auto white balance. I have been filming box jellies and it works much better. The problem with Sony is they try to apply white balance above water to below water in their white balance mode. A mess. The only thing I got their engineers to do was stop their custom white balance from switching while recording when in custom white balance mode. Their engineering team is basically unapproachable and they don't even follow up to tell you if they changed their firmware. They are very slow to update any firmware as well. I am looking for either Canon to get their act together in low light or Sony to fix these problems in an A7S4. There are filmmakers that want to see an ND filter installed but I have not had a need for one underwater. What lights are you using? It was mentioned to me that using lights with a higher CRI value could be required but that is a lot of money to drop if it makes no difference.
