Today, we discuss the Sony A95L QD-OLED Master series with none other than Sony's very own Rob Brennan. Rob is the project manager for Home Entertainment and Sound. Rob breaks down the A95L, its win at the Value Electronics King of TV'S shootout . We will also discuss the timing of the release, the price, and the overall journey of bringing the A95L to market. Rob will address the Sony Tax , Hdmi 2.1 , upcoming gaming features, XR clear, and much more.
I'll time stamp this video after it premieres.
Special thanks to Rob Brennan for taking the time to talk with me and our community.

@@BRIANSTECHTHERAPY hi Brian on the avs forum we have found that many owners of a95k and A95l including me have scratches and abrasions on the panel due to the foam sheet used by sony for packaging... I myself am waiting for a replacement from sony... I wonder How is it possible that Sony doesn't notice this problem... given your various live shows with Rob Brennan why don't you ask him if he knows anything about this problem!? Thank you

480 hz oled is out next year, monitor side. Or it's 240hz, but I think it goes up to 480hz if you use a lower resolution than 4k. It could happen very soon, but within 3 years, since monitors are normally behind tvs for oled.

Love the A95L, but honestly I would never upgrade to it if you already have the A95K, unless you need the bigger size. It’s only slightly better than the A95K, side by side, same settings, A95L is a little brighter, and exhibits a little more definition, not major amounts like a lot of people are pretending…

I appreciate Robert's explanation that Sony doesn't completely eliminate blooming from their LCD displays in order to preserve shadow detail. I think of the slightly elevated black levels on good LCD panels the same way I think of the soft hiss on good analog audio recordings. One issue I have with OLED technology is the automatic brightness limiting which greatly reduces brightness at full screen. For me, when abrupt change is part of the plot of the movie or episode, this can decrease the dynamic range, and therefore decrease the impact. While turning off maximum brightness eliminates this, the display becomes so dim that I wouldn't even be able to get that impact at smaller image sizes. I know LCD backlighting still has this issue, but it's not nearly as aggressive as with OLED technology. Also, even if I circumvent ABL by either maxing out local dimming and turning down the backlight or turning off local dimming and maxing out the backlight, the full-screen brightness is much brighter than with OLED technology, preserving that dynamic range and impact. Based on Rting's measurements in many areas of performance, I am choosing the X90L full array local dimming display for my first 4K UHD display being that it beats the X93L and X95L in so many areas of performance which are of importance to me. I'll either leave local dimming on and turn down the backlight, or turn local dimming off, max out the backlight, and live with elevated black levels if shadow detail is lost with maximum local dimming and a lower backlight.

I was interested in the 93L, but the fact that the X93L didn't get the clear processor is criminal.. ok don't give it the "13%" extra dimming zones the X95L has but the X90L has it, there's literally no reason the 93L shouldn't have it either .. and maybe it just me butl when you asked him for a definitive yes or no if the 93L had the clear processor, if we couldn't get the X95L in the other sizes like the EU, at least give it the clear .

So glad to see Rob back, even though he's a Sony guy he's always very humble and balanced. Also glad to hear him actually recommend using the light sensor! I have always been a an advocate for that, since it only applies to SDR content. Personally I'm ok with Sony TV's costing more, cause I know they're putting more time and money into building a long-term higher quality product than their competitors. You know Sony is getting first dibs on LCD and OLED panels from AUO, CSOT, LG Display, Samsung Display ect.. cause they're more willing to fork over the $ for them. Sony still makes as much of the internal and external components as they possibly can and it's shown in the final product quality. As much as I'm happy to see how far Hisense and TCL have come, they are still miles away on picture processing abilities, out of the box accuracy and overall product polish.

If they’re really interested in using the screen size adjustment in useful ways for gaming purposes, it would be awesome if they’d allow some way to control the amount of scaling for different input resolutions from 240p to 1080p in order to land on perfect integer scales even if it doesn’t fill the whole screen

Not sure if it's a sony problem but what about fixing how some of the streaming apps run on the Sony A95L and Im sure other Sony tvs? For example, disney plus and Paramount are not outputting dolby atmos on this tv. Hulu is not outputting 4k quality. Netflix, Apple TV and MAX work perfect but what about the rest? So annoying. I shouldn't have to connect another streaming device to a flagship tv to receive 4K quality and sound when the apps are built in. When I connect my Google 4k streaming device, Hulu puts out 4k and disney plus puts out atmos, but it doesn't do any of this for netflix, or paramount etc. Frustrating. Again shouldn't have to buy a streaming device when apps work with tv. Any way you can ask for any info about this or if updates are coming so all streaming apps work correctly? Thanks!

Hi Brian, I think Sony could do better in the game department, few key questions : Can the 2.1 hdmi arc port be move to an 2.0 port via firmware update, this will give us 1 more 2.1 hdmi port for gaming rather than 1 ? Is the 144hz refresh rate possible via firmware update ? The chips in the Sony is definitely capable looking at the description. Could we get input lag boost for fps for competitive gaming like the LG, 16ms is not great. When can we expect dolby vision gaming and the ability to reduce the screen size as advertised? In the UK we don't get free view or bbc app, when is that coming? The tv is amazing just missing the gaming feature.

Wow you didn't bother to watch the video did you, most of your questions are answered in the video. cliff notes: hdmi 2.1, cost more to add more, most people will not use, if you need more use a $20 2.1 switch problem solved. 144hz refresh, technology not there yet, not much source supporting it, largely it's unnecessary. DV gaming coming by end of year, rest no timeline. It has more than enough gaming features/modes even Brian is happy with its gaming features.

I see the value of the Sony brand as I currently own an A80J, X900F, HT-Z9F, and a 5.1 surround system with Sony AVR and speakers. But I can’t justify spending the 30% higher cost for the A95L for an out of box performance that per the shoot out scores is 4.6% better than its competitor. $1100 more at the 65” size than the S95C is stopping me from pulling the trigger. @BRIANSTECHTHERAPY Brian, hope all is well. I have went through 2 A95L’s now both with marks under the screen to a horrendous extent. Should not have to accept that on a 5k TV. I am lost in where to go from here. Raised this to Sony in every way possible to no avail. Was wondering with Rob as a contact/friend, you can raise this to him? Surely I’m not the only one affected. Aside from having to exchange my panel with no guarantee I’ll get a good one, there is CLEARLY a manufacturing issue with these and Sony needs to address it. It’s unacceptable on a $5,000 TV. How does Sony deem it ok to ship TVs in this condition? Please let me know if you can help. Really Enjoy your content and appreciate everything you’re doing. I can provide pics, or whatever’s needed for reference.

I'm so sorry that you are having this issue my friend. I will get in contact with Rob and ask him about this issue specifically. That said I'd still switch it out . It could be a bad palet of them. I'll let you know what I hear when I get a response.

@@BRIANSTECHTHERAPY Thanks Brian. In speaking with some others who experienced similar on forums etc many are adamant its the polysyltrene? (Or whatever they use to cover the screen). lnstead of using a peel off plastic film like LG and Samsung (neither of which has this issue)any seem to think it’s the vibrations during transport with this covering on the screen which are causing the marks. I can’t say if it’s that or under the screen itself, but both seem plausible. Anyhow - just wanted to make mention so you can let Rob/Sony know. As always - thank you, and a Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.

I could never get music and game sound, unless I used the console, but I like to use my phone or pc, to keep my play counts, and have a dedicated controls. Oh, if you can mix two sources.... You wild weirdos, I can't believe you want to do something I want.

The qd oleds have a triangular pixel structure,so it will show some color distortion, especially on white text where you can see green color on top and purple color on bottom of the text.also the screen itself is not black, its more gray,so it will show a lighter black levels than their woled counterpart, this is due to the lack of a polarizer filter in the screen.

Why is Sony's rep the only one being interviewed? Samsung released the S89c! LG has the B series! None of Sony's TVs have been truly overlooked. All of these panels deserve their time to shine or fall flat on their face. Just interviewing one brands representative makes your views seem bias no matter how much you beat the dead horse by saying you don't have any skin in the game. In fairness! Just interview other brands representatives to see their perspectives as well. Verily, I say unto you "You can never make everyone happy, but your actions speak louder than words."

@@profitfever The Tech Giant put the B2 against the C2 last year. You may believe that the panel on the B series is inferior. But how well does it perform with the feature set that it has? I will give you this that the B series don't get as bright as the C series. Yet, when watching the comparison of the two the C2 only beat it with brightness and color saturation. Have you watched hdr movies, Dolby vision content or hlg content on a B series oled? Can you speak from experience that the panel is truly inferior? LG states that the EVO panel benefits also from processing and not just the panel. The question is can that television manifest a picture quality that can compete with others at it's price point? I own a Sony A9s, LG C2, Sony A80k, Samsung S95b, Skyworth XC9300 and 2 LG A2 oleds. How do you think all of these televisions perform?

@@BRIANSTECHTHERAPY Thanks for the insight. I do think that there is a television technology for everyone. People see things differently from each other. What I call garbage or trash would be those items that don't or cannot function properly. I appreciate your efforts in trying to reach out to the other brands. Keep up the good work.
