A short preview of the newly announced Sony Bravia 7. This is the 65" model.
Location: 391 Orchard Rd Best Denki, #05-01/04, Singapore 238872, Takashimaya
Catch this display unit at the location above and look for their friendly staff if you're interested in any TVs from major brands! Not affiliated with anyone.
At the start of the video, the picture settings are configured to the following:
Mode: Standard
HDR Tone Mapping: Gradation Preferred
Brightness: Max
Peak Luminance: High
Local Dimming: Medium
1080p Test clips that were played in this video ranges from: Local Dimming Tests, Screen Uniformity Tests, Stress Sample Clips (Fireworks, OLED Clips), Gameplay Clips, & Movies.
Please note: Throughout the video, the exposure of the camera is increased and decreased manually multiple times via ISO and Shutter Speed to hunt for blooming while also trying to match what our eyes would see. (Tried my best to stick to 1/60 shutter speed as the video is captured at 30 FPS)
Was also moving from center, left and right positions to sample viewing angle and blooming.
[ First Impressions of the TV in a brightly lit store environment ]
Using the hockey dirty screen test clip, there doesn't seem to be the usual dark corners as commonly seen in previous Sony TVs such as the X90L and X90K. The screen of this display unit doesn't seem to exhibit extremely obvious uniformity issues.
During the Rocket League test clips (at 7:10) the 65" Bravia 7 seems to have a better local dimming system compared to the 65" X95L and X90L (more obvious on the X90), as the dimming zones doesn't behave crazily (brightening the entire car causing faint blooming) while attempting to illuminate the highlights of the car. This is an indication that there is likely an improvement due to the updated local dimming system.
Between the 65" Bravia 7 and 65" X95L (Both set to Vivid Mode), the Bravia 7 is noticeably brighter.
The colors on the Bravia 7 shifts earlier than the X95L while walking off angle.
More blooming was noticed on the Bravia 7 than the X95L, in scenes where it’s just a black background with text or objects e.g the Samsung Logo at the end of a demo video clip. However, in some test clips such as the Gameplay clip (Rocket League and Ark Survival Evolved), blooming seems to manifest around small highlights more on the X95L than on the Bravia 7. If these 2 TVs have the same amount of dimming zones, then I’m assuming it could be due to a different local dimming algorithm (how it reacts to fast moving objects and fast camera pans).
There seems to be differences in how the local dimming system behaves as explained above. At this moment, I’m leaning towards the Bravia 7 as the local dimming algorithm seems to behave better during the scenarios mentioned above and the fact that it is brighter than the X95L. (This might change as I continue to test both TVs in different stores)
Because of the stuff mentioned above, it is best I refrain from giving a definite answer on which is better between the Bravia 7 and X95L (blooming wise).
The Bravia 7 seems capable of intensely bright 10-40% window sized highlights with tolerable hazing/clouding, achieving dark scenes that look deep and contrasty (better than the X90L for sure). The overall image is more impactful on the Bravia 7 than on the X90L.
A semi-gloss coating is used on the Bravia 7 compared to the Bravia 9 and X95L's glossy coating. The semi-gloss coating is seen to be diffusing more reflected light, causing it to spread across a larger area of the screen than the glossy screen of the B9 and X95L.
To summarize this first impression, the Bravia 7 seems to be a good iteration (with trade-offs) to last year's Sony X95L. The Bravia 7 is noticeably brighter than the X95L. The Local Dimming behavior as explained above is different from the X95L. The X95L has better viewing angles, colors on the Bravia 7 begins to shift earlier than the x95L while walking off angle. It lacks the wide-angle filter, and it has a semi-gloss coating instead of a glossy coating on the X95L. Considering the lower price than the X95L and the fact that it looks better than the X90L, I'm tempted to get one!
Keep in mind these are first impressions (not a review) observed in a brightly lit store environment. Please wait for reviews from RTINGS, HDTVTest and DigitalTrends AND see it in person before making final judgement!
Additional Info related to Bravia 7 & 9:
It has been confirmed by the Sony Tech Department that the Bravia 7 will have the same Micro Circuit Backlight Drivers and Local Dimming algorithm as seen on the Bravia 9.

Most of the test clips streamed on the youtube app as seen in this footage were in 1080p unlike the Bravia 9 torture test where it was mostly 4K content throughout. This was due to the weaker internet connection/signal or the Bravia 7 being connected to a different router than the Bravia 9. It will look even better with a stronger wifi connection!

The Bravia 9 girl in the blue dress scene look 3d but in this not so much. How was the scene in real life? Coming from an LG C2 this tv look very good. Nice to see details in dark scene. Reminds me of my Sony LCD before the C2. Might not have the contrast (and screen uniformity) but there is something that the Sony did that the LG just does differently. Thank you very much for the video, mate.

Great point. Unfortunately, I'm unable to give an accurate enough impression of that particular girl scene due to the following reasons. It is likely because the same clips on this video were ran at 1080p instead of 4K on the Bravia 9 torture test video. I tried to play 4K videos on the Bravia 7 but the internet connection didn't seem great, causing the videos to buffer constantly if set to 4K. The Bravia 9 might've been connected to a different router or was placed in closer proximity to one. Additionally, the Bravia 7 here was set to Standard Mode instead of Vivid on the Bravia 9 torture test. But the Bravia 9 is noticeably brighter even when I viewed the Bravia 7 in vivid mode though not seen in this preview. In the event I get to run the same selection of torture clips on a Bravia 7 with better internet connection sufficient for 4K, I'll be sure to update and attempt to record another preview.

It seems that the screen is very reflective, correct ?

It seems to be diffusing light on a much larger surface area of the screen compared to the Bravia 9. This is in a worst-case scenario environment with light bouncing off all over the place in that brightly lit store.

Looking really good. Minimal to no blooming at all. Even when you exposed higher. Only from an angle could it be seen. Head on it looks like basically no blooming. Too bad with reflections in the store. Not your fault with that. I guess next time bring a whole screen to put around you to block out the other lights and TVs shining onto the screen, ha ha.
@Emptrix
@Emptrix 13 күн бұрын
Agreed! The reflection caused by the brightly lit store made it difficult to perform a torture test. I had my full-frame Sony A7IV camera with an F2.8 lens in my backpack but wasn't sure if the staff would raise any concerns hence went with the lower profile camera instead. I think they will be more likely to allow the larger camera than a whole screen to block light 😂

Ahh disappointed to see Semi-matte being used. Guess I’ll buy to last years X95L with Full glossy panel. Also what panel does the Bravia 8 & 9 use?
@Emptrix
@Emptrix 11 күн бұрын
The Bravia 8 uses a WOLED panel while the Bravia 9 uses a VA LCD panel with mini leds. It has also been claimed that the Bravia 9 and 7 are using quantum dots instead of PFS phosphor. Both the 8 and 9 are glossy panels.

@@Emptrix Cheers mate. I was told the Bravia 9 uses a semi-matte panel because of the X-Wide Angle. Makes sense since as Sony tend to use Glossy screens for their 95 series. It just sucks 65” B9 isn’t available here.

@@starlightx8686 Cheers. Semi-matte? I've seen the Bravia 9 in person and it's very similar to the X95L which also has an X-Wide Angle Filter and a Glossy coating. There is a possibility that the person that informed you might've been mistaken.

@@starlightx8686 Exactly the same situation as you! B9 65" isn't available at my location. I'm heavily deciding between the X95L and B7 but the X95L doesn't support 4:4:4 full chroma subsampling at 4K 120hz with HDR Enabled. This is quite a dealbreaker for me as I'll be using the TV as a PC monitor. The B7 is likely to support this as it has the new Mediatek Pentonic 1000 SoC which has been seen to solve this issue. I will lose the x-wide angle filter if I go with the Bravia 7 though, which is also a deal breaker but not as severe as the chroma sub sampling capabilities. Not having that will mean I would have to constantly toggle between HDR and non HDR just to get the optimal experience on PC based on activity. Could become a hassle real quick 😒 If you're not planning to use it for PC, I doubt this will affect you if you choose the X95L and if so, indeed it is the better option especially if you can get it on a clearance sale!

I see too much reflection, not good, The Bravia 7 comes with "X-Anti Reflection" technology??? Anyone can comment on this issue???
@Emptrix
@Emptrix 2 күн бұрын
The Bravia 7 does not come with X-Anti Reflection nor does it come with X-Wide Angle Filter. It is using a semi-gloss coating. Please keep in mind that the footage was captured in a brightly lit store environment where light is bouncing all over the place. I've visited another store with better lighting condition and the reflection wasn't as bad as what was seen here. Unfortunately, filming was not allowed at that other store (it was a Sony Store), so I am unable to share any footage of it. From what I saw, the X95L and Bravia 9 has better reflection handling as they come with glossy screens and X-Anti Reflection coating. But they come with another set of reflection issues (light streaks and rainbow artifacts when light hits the screen from an angle). If you're concerned about reflection handling, its best to see these models in person, shine a flashlight at different angles and see which screen coating suits you best. @@Emptrix What a dissapointment.. .. I thought Bravia 7 was gon be the X95L equivalent. I also noticed that the 85" X95L is more expensive than the 85" Bravia 7 even though the X95L is an older model.
@Emptrix
@Emptrix 13 күн бұрын
@@FenixPajarito I have the same opinion as you when it comes to the screen coating, I prefer a glossy screen compared to semi-gloss. But the Mediatek Pentonic 1000 SoC in the Bravia 7 is another deciding factor as it is likely to finally allow full 4:4:4 chroma subsampling at 4K 120hz with HDR and VRR enabled. X95L/X90L which lacks the new SoC doesn't seem to be able to achieve this based off Vincent in his HDTVTest review videos of the X95L and X90L.

@@Emptrix Most AAA game scant even be played at 4K @120hs anyways well at least on console. Games with demanding graphics can't achieve 4K 120hz. So this is not big deal at least for me. Plus Sony tvs doesn't offer the best input latency even hisense and tcl have lower input lag than the Sony tvs so for competitive gaming I would get a Samsung or an LG. Anyways there's still a chance I get the Bravia 7 I'm deciding between that or the New TCL QM851. To be honest I like Semi Gloss panels but still it would have been better if the Bravia 7 had a Glossy panel.
@Emptrix
@Emptrix 12 күн бұрын
@@FenixPajarito Glad that you have an additional choice of the QM851. In asia and eu, there isn't a QM851, it's the TCL C8 series which are typically nerfed/downgraded versions of the QM series in the states. It is the same for Hisense, they run the VIDA OS instead of Android as seen in the U.S. They also usually switch the panels from VA to IPS in the EU and Asian regions. So at my location, Hisense and TCL are not an option unfortunately. It's either Samsung or Sony Mini leds.
