It also records 4ch audio. 2 Main that follow the dial and 2 more as backup. Channel 3 and 4 are omnidirectional with channel 4 being -20 dB.

I have the ECM-B1M and it’s great too. I do like the idea of an even smaller microphone tho. The best parts of these mics are no cables and auto levels.

I almost bought that mic but decided to keep my ECM-B1M….love no cables, but more than that…..the auto mode just makes it so easy! In the studio I use an ntg5 into the K3M with that auto mode…just so easy! Great video! The M1 was a fun mic

Fun fact, they also just released a RODE WIRELESS GO PRO competitor as well! Once again, plugs into the MIS, but then gives you a TX module to toss on talent or yourself when you need it. Yes the price is higher in comparison, and you probably get less stuff than the RODE Pro kit, but again, MIS compatible. Which is huuuuge.

Is the Sony ECM-M1 good for weddings or should I look for something else? I liked the unidirectional part in the religious part and omnidirectional in the hall where I can't always put an external recorder...

Great job on the video David! Thanks for making it. The smart money says you ordered an a6700, or it COULD be an A7CR, but I'm gonna go out on a limb and say the new Nikon Z F.

The m1 is awesome! In my video on it I have to say that the noise cancellation switch works but sounds awful. Definitely would do that in post for sure. When the mic goes into front and rear it does sound a bit more digital but is works well. If you want all the polar options this mic is great, if you want a slightly better sound then the B1M is the mic to go for. Both are great though

So that small mic can only be used on specific equipment as the cameras has to be able to communicate with it were the bigger wired mic works with a wider scope of cameras...

But now I would worried about how durable the hot shoe on my camera an the feet of the mic are. I would like they still inculde the 3.5mm option for analog. But since as you said it might be doing every trick digitally, the 3.5mm analog way might not work.
@DavidManningvlog
@DavidManningvlog 4 ай бұрын
It feels pretty solid and I beat the heck out of my gear and it's been fine so far. I think the mic would break though before it damaged your hotshoe. Of the two, the mic seems like the weaker point. I'm thinking you drop the camera on it's head and that mic goes first

How does it compare to the ECM-B1M in audio quality? The M1's got some bad reviews on the audio department, although it's a new item. I guess the market for this is the family vlog where you don't want to mic up 4-6 people and kids with individual Rode wireless units, but don't want a huge and complicated shotgun, either. If you're a one-man show, it's better to have a lav, and if you shoot events professionally, it's not versatile enough.

It's a good mic for vlogging, but only for vlogging. Rode NTG is more versatile in many situations. Also, it sounds much better
@DavidManningvlog
@DavidManningvlog 10 ай бұрын
Yeah, I think that's probably the case. Like I mentioned at the end, the NTG is doing less digital processing on board and for professional applications, you pretty much want your camera and mic doing as little processing as possible so you can control everything in post

Presumably this is only usable with Sony cameras, correct? I have the R8 and am pondering one of the wireless packages (Rode/DJI/Newer, etc.) for reasonably-priced solid audio - but I was VERY impressed with the Sony's quality. I know the R8 has a digital hot-shoe, but knowing Canon, there seems like a snowball's chance in hell that it's compatible with Sony, lol. Great stuff!

That’s not so much a fault of Canon but that Sony have their own proprietary hot shoe format though!

The speed of sound is roughly at 13,000 inches per second. If it's sampling audio at 48,000 sample per second that means that even though those two microphone next to each other are only 1 inch apart, it can tell it a sound reached one before the other. That is, a right sound would be recorded by the right microphone 3 samples before the left. Therefore, the computer in the microphone can figure out where sound is coming from and, like you said, digitally pick out which signal to use. The multiple mics would also help with noise cancellation. That technology is the future. Early days. Because of their distance to the subject, I don't believe either mic is good unless last resort. Better to boom or use a lav. By your priorities, I believe the Rode is Ebay bound ;)
