Yes, the lens comes with a hood :-) Sony's venerable full-frame superzoom lens has never had a great reputation, but maybe it's better than people thought? Let's take a look.

I got this lens as my travel light lens with my new camera. Haven't used it for any videos yet, but where I've tried it out while getting used to a new brand of camera, it has been performing quite well! Good to know about these limitations, though. I'll definitely be getting a different lens for my typical stuff, and maybe a prime lens for my green screen room stuff. Great review!

Way back when I was looking to purchase my first new glass beyond just the kit lens, it was down to this lens and the 70-300G. I just could never shake the feeling something was off with this lens and went with the 70-300 instead. Two different zoom ranges, I kow... In the end the 70-300 wasn't the most spectacular lens in the world, and I've since upgraded to the 100-400GM, but this review makes me glad I got it instead of the 24-240.

I almost forgot I still have this lens. I have been using the Tamron 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 instead now, and never looked back.

Hi Chris, thanks! The Techart Pro adapter makes it possible to use this lens on a Nikon Z series camera as well! Like the other lenses with the Sony E mount. Is the new Nikon Z 24-200mm with VR image stabilization also a nice option for you? Best Ralf

Any plans to review the Voigtlander 50mm f2 APO Chris? It's meant to be immensely sharp at all apertures. It would be nice to see how it compares to the other 50mm's you've reviewed recently. . . . . . (as well as the upcoming Sigma 50mm f/1.2 DG DN 😉).

can i use this on my sony a6100?,.i want to try doing wildlife/bird photography and this lens is $200 cheaper than the aps-c lens sony 70-350mm oss,.

Hi, Christopher. Unbelievable how the reviews of this lens differs. I’ve had a look at almost all available reviews of this lens. They are going from very bad till very good. I don’t understand it and i’m wondering if it has to do with the firmware upgrade or the production period. Grts from Belgium.

The in-camera corrections on JPGs really make a difference in regard to vignetting, linear distortion and CA. Nothing can be done about the corners at 24mm. The bokeh in the telephoto range is very nice. This lens is actually quite good for video.

Is it as sharp as the 24-105 F4 en 70-200 F4 ? Now i got 2 lenses, both are heavy, is this a option?

To back up your conclusions, I compared two images taken on an A7IV with this and the 24-105mm G lens. I cropped the 24-105mm G lens result at 105mm to match the exact FOV from the 24-240MM at 240mm. The images were night and day different. The albeit now smaller image from the 24-105mm enlarged to appear the same size was far, far sharper than the untouched, full-frame image from the 24-240mm lens. Of course, the 33MP sensor helps. I am going to sell the 24-240mm lens now, it simply is not worth my time for its soft images in the higher zoom range. In fact, the APS-C 70-350mm G lens from Sony on the A7IV is far sharper, too and that yields a whopping 525mm equivalent image that is very sharp. I own the Sony 200-600mm, but for travel, the light weight APS-C lens is wonderful. It just shows that G really means something on Sony Glass.

What do you think about using A7R V with 61Mp? Will the quality of 24-105mm F4 lens at 105mm with a clear image zoom of 2x will be much better than the 24-240mm lens at 210mm? Thanks.

I've owned this lens for a few months. Absolutely love it. I've even tested it against my primes (50 and 85) on a tripod, and without pixel peeping (even WITH pixel peeping in some cases) I find it just as sharp. Just something I wouldn't use in low light unless I could do a longer exposure.

I’ve taken this lens to several countries 10 total & it’s the perfect walk around lens. Nothing’s perfect but if works well in sunny conditions & with a CP filter

I own the lens, it comes with a lens hood. Very good "always mounted" lens especially on travelling. Image quality of course is a compromise.

There’s no reason for a company as Sony to make a lens as bad as this lens. They sacrificed glass for price but if we have companies that produce great imaging with non world class quality glass (Tokina between many) Sony could very easily do the same to give a bit better image sharpness / quality. But it is what it is and like many súper zooms you don’t pay for quality but the convenience of reachability. Great review, as always!

Is not that bad lens in real life use. Picture quality is a compromise, as it is in all super zooms. When comes to distortion and corner darkness, this is what mirrorless world has to offer nowadays. I watched most of your lens reviews and most manufacturers don't bother with distortion correction. You need to buy top of the range lenses for that.

I own this lens and use it on my A6000. Despite the review, the center sharpness at 240 mm is terrible. Perhaps its a function of the APS C body, but I would not buy this lens again. My Panasonic pocket camera takes sharper pictures

What a huge shame, this lens had some amazing potential with that zoom range. Imagine they release a V2 with fixed f4 apeture and make the optics sharp. Would be a mighty lens for the versatility of the zoom range

I gave this lens to my brother to get him started with Sonys. I miss this lens a lot. It's not popular with the big egos, but for real photographers, this is the one to carry on short notice. Just erase the exif data and they will wonder what lens you were using.

Great review, you definitely convinced me not to buy this lens. I was considering it as a longer zoom option to pair with my FE PZ 28-135 for 4k video but since I record raw externally the severe distortion and aberrations would be too much of a headache to deal with, not even taking into consideration the edge sharpness issues. I'll wait for Sony to come out with a better superzoom since they seem to be releasing a lot of new lenses lately.

It's so annoying to see 'experts' test lenses against optical charts! Lenses are designed to shoot in the 3D world, if you want to shoot charts, get a lens like the Micro Nikkor 55mm, it was designed for copy work of FLAT art!

Optical charts are objective. If you want "3d" reviews, go watch Jared Polin, where essentially every lens reviewed is a "must buy". Or just pick a lens at random, you'll probably make as good of a choice then.
