Glad to see more of these small primes coming to market. I'm a big fan of the 40ish focal length. Never got along with 35 or 50

i love my Batis 40. tried the sony 35 1.8 and kept the Batis for the way more nicer colours and the better focal lenght

I want to give Sony credit for releasing the best aperture for the size instead of going for the typical 2.8

My thought was to compare this with the 2.8 zooms as it has a fairly similar aperture. I wonder- how does the quality compare to the 28-75 Tamron at 40 mm?

That's not a bad thought, though the main advantage of the prime is the size - which the Tamron is vastly larger than.

@@DustinAbbottTWI I share the same question. While yes, the primes are smaller, you still have to find a way to carry several to cover the same focal lengths as say a 24-70 f2.8 zoom. So I wonder how IQ compares between the two combos?

@@SilatShooter The idea of a prime is not to carry 10 of them un order to cover a zoom lens but to zoom with your feet

Hi Dustin. I love your review. I am looking at a new camera and had my eyes set on the Canon R6, but the Sony system has some really nice lens from 3rd parties like the Tamron 150 mm - 500 mm. Which system would you recommend for landscape photography? I know shouldn't be about the gear, but about the photographer. Thank you

I was in the same position as you a while back, only I was considering between the Sony and a Nikon ecosystems. I ended up going with Sony primarily for the third-party lens support. All three, Sony, Nikon and Canon, have strong lenses for their own ecosystems, but are often on the expensive side, while Sony is, for the time being at least, the only serious ecosystem that has extensive third-party lens support. While RF and Z mount support has been announced, it will take at least a year or two before we start seeing third-party auto-focus lenses for these mounts, and who knows how long before the auto-focus system is perfected for these ecosystems.

Sony's biggest advantage at this point is absolutely it's third party lens support.

Hi, Re 40mm f2.5; I agree the focal length is not ideal for astrophotography and milkyway. But being 'relatively' fast as less amount of vignetting (wide open/2.5), plus sharp. . .how us the lens for low light photography especially astrophotography and milyway? Sony 35mm f1.8 is said to be poor for above goals, otherwise is a recommended lens for all other photos I was wondering if worth buying to use on A7Riii body, without going for expensive or large lenses? Thanks.

There are better astro lenses. Consider something like the Samyang AF 24mm F1.8 instead.

@@DustinAbbottTWI Thank you. But is n't Samyang 24mm too plasticky? While, Sony is better built? Besides, my goal is to have one "small", light-weight (budget) lens that is an all-rounder (not specific for low light photography/astrophotography). I also raised my query on DP Review's forum under "Sony FE 40mm f/2.5 for Astrophotography and Milkyway (Low-light photos)" that explains (in detail) my requirements and limitations.

Purely from sharpness perspective and value proposition, would Sony 35 1.8 be a bettter choice overall

In some ways, yes, though is is a veyr nice little lens.

The Batis has more up close magnification, obviously, and a slightly larger maximum aperture, but the Sony is every bit as sharp.

Twice the price and twice the size. To quote Dustin, we're getting a "renaissance of compactness" and the point is to get solid performance and great features in a small package. I don't see it as state of the art, but it will improve the state of my shoulder bag.
