Today we review the Sony HT-A7000 home theater system paired with the Sony SW5 wireless subwoofer and SA-RS3S wireless surround speakers. We used the reavon UBR-X200 4k bluray player with the apple tv for dolby atmos and DTS-X demos. The Samsung LSP9 ultra short throw projector was our display device. Is it better than the Sony HT-A9 and LG or Samsung soundbars?

One thing I learned about the HT-A7000 that made a HUGE difference is going into advanced speaker settings - going into Levels - and raising the volume on the individual channels to +3 to +4db. You can play around with it - but it lifted this thing off the ground.

It also sounds better if you specify the speaker distance manually instead of using the built in mic to calibrate. You just have to enter in the feet from the main listening position for the center, side speakers and up firing speakers distance from the wall and ceiling. After that I put all the channels at +5db and left the center at the default. It does give a more immersive experience by cranking up the decibels on everything but the center. I only own the sound bar. Might not make as big a difference if you have the rear speakers.

I'm glad I didn't buy the original rears.. Sony announced a new set of rears for they A7000 and A5000. They are 180w (90w per speaker) battery powered A9's. They are a bit smaller but considering how good the A9's are based on reviews, these will really help with spatial sound. Sony is claiming 10 hours of battery life on a full charge and 90 minutes from. A 10 minute charge. They can also be plugged in at all times. Should make for some interesting speaker placement even though after a year or two the batteries will last 20 minutes on a full charge. I'm sure Sony has made some people upset over this. The original rears had no up firing speaker or side speakers so I decided not to get them for that specific reason and it was one thing every reviewer pointed out. Looks like Sony listened but they should offer some sort of trade in program for people who bought the original rears. They are almost double the coats of the current rear channel speakers but give. The price of the A9's are actually reasonably priced. Supposed to be available in June/July. electronics.sony.com/audio/soundbars/all-soundbars/p/sars5 Product highlights Optional rear speakers featuring 360 Spatial Sound Mapping for use with HT-A7000 or HT-A5000 Soundbar Direct wireless connection with HT-A7000 or HT-A5000 Soundbar Built-in battery with up to 10-hour battery life and quick charging Immersive audio from up-firing speakers Activate Sound Field Optimization with OPTIMIZE button Total 180W4 power output brings music and movies to life Flexible layout - no power outlet needed Omnidirectional Block Design with room-filling sound Wall mount-capable rear speakers

Me too. I originally got the Sonos ARC based on reviews and I was extremely underwhelmed. This was just the sound bar, no sub or rear speaker. With the Sony the bass is definitely better. Nothing earth shattering but the best bass I've heard from a sound bar but it is more expensive than the ARC. Another huge advantage is with the right equipment, you don't have to mess with ARC or eARC. I don't know if it's my Samsung Neo, which only has one 2.1 port and it's not the eARC port. The eARC port is 2.0b. With both the Sonos and the ARC it seemed like I was constantly having to power cycle things to get it working which is super annoying. Since I have an HDFury VRROOM,. I just run the dedicated HDMI output to one of the HDMI ports. The downside is you can't control the volume with a TV remote but another problem is even with eARC, it wouldn't bitstream DTS-X. I w read that with eARC there can be licensing issues so it won't even pass through DTS of any kind through eARC. At least I couldn't as the HDFury has 4 HDMI outputs. 2 2.1 video outputs for splitter or matrix mode, an eARC HDMI sound output like the Arcana, and a HDMI output to a receiver that sends a static image so it will play sound. It looks like that is what the reviewer did as the sound was on HDMI 1 and not TV (eARC mode). This just works although I don't get any sound from my TV but that doesn't matter to me as Tizen is a hot mess. Sony announced another set of rears with up firing speakers but they won't be out until this summer and they are 600 bucks. Sony claims they get 10 hours battery life and you can get 90 minutes of sound from a 30 minutes charge. This would be great for speaker placement as you do not have to run any wires. At the same time you have to recharge the speakers and they aren't cheap. Does eARC only passthrough the sound formats the display supports? It appears to be the case on my samsung. It's compatible with anything Dolby but with DTS of any kind, I would get PCM . I also own the ATV4K and I hate that it converts everything to PCM. People will say this doesn't matter but when bit streaming from my shield pro I notice a difference when playing the same content on the ATV4K. Letting the sound bar do the deciding just sounds better than the apple converting Dolby Atmos to PCM. My main reason for getting it was it was the only steaming box that can do LLDV for DV, HDR10 and SDR content. Since I have the HDFury I can get Dolby Vision on my Samsung display. If it didn't have a dedicated HDMI non ARC sound output then I might have returned the Sony. eARC seems to have no real standards and displays have different issues with different sound bars. Heck, the peeps who make up the HDMI standards now say HDMI 2.0/2.0b no longer exists and manufacturers are able to just slap HDMI 2.1 on there and then leave it up to the manufacturer to specify the capabilities FOR THE END USER TO DECIPHER.Not an issue for me but a lot of people do t read the fine print. There are already Chinese monitors that claim to be 2.1 but when you read the fine print no 40Gbps, no VRR, no ALLM, no QFT, no eARC and no QMS which are all part of the 2.1 spec. Anything marked as 2.1 is buyer beware at this point. If Samsung had just put eARC on the 2.1 port then it would be a non issue but they didn't on the US version. The European version has 4 2.1 ports.

I bought this and put it in my bedroom (12x12) and it sounds great. I watched Halloween (2018) DTS-X, there’s the scene at night with the crickets and I tell you it sounded like speakers were above me. It’s more suited for a small bedroom like mine. I’ve also been told by an installer who purchased the HT-A9 that it’s not exactly what Sony is advertising, he mentioned that you should put the rear firing speakers about 5 ft behind you to get more of the mapped out speakers above you effect (HT-A9) what I don’t like about the Samsung is that a lot of my customers complain about not enough low bass and some concerns over the woofer making popping sounds.

My problem, and I didn't find this out until my fin adventure with eARC which the more I think about it is stupid. Maybe it's my Samsung QN90A but for one, it won't passthrough DTS of any kind. It converts it to PCM. I confirmed this from my JDFury VRROOM webserver. Anything Dolby would bitstream, anything DTS would convert to PCM 7.1. From what I have read it comes down to licensing and since Dolby Atmos boa DD+ won the streaming services not many display makers pay for DTS licensing. A 50 dollar HDMI switch can pass through and bitstream any format granted it is capable spec wise yet by eARC port on my Samsung is limited because Samsung didn't pay DTS? What in the flying jebus crust is that all about? Luckily my VRROOM has a dedicated HDMI audio output that puts out the audio and a static image so I just plug that into the HT-A7000 HDMI 1 input. ARC just seemed to work because it used leftover CEC bandwidth to get lossly codecs, especially Atmos embedded in a DD+ audio stream. Atmos isn't a sound format, it's metadata embedded in a DD+ or Dolby TrueHD (lossless) audio signal. TrueHD is what you find on disks, at least for the most part. DTS-X is the same thing although it's almost always embedded in a DTS-MA signal which is lossless like TrueHD as it's typically only on disks. Yet with eARC I've had nothing but issues. I honestly think it's because the US QN90A only has one 2.1 port (port 4), while the eARC port is port 3, which is 2.0b, at least when HDMI 2.0 existed. According to the genius's who make up the HDMI speak have said going forward, everything can be labeled as 2.1 and all 2.1 features I. The SPEC set in 2017 are all now optional. It's up to the hardware maker to list the capabilities. Alright, now I understand why eARC is a mess, these people are idiots. A port can now be labeled as 2.1 but not do FRL5 (40Gbps), which is the norm right now even though the spec is 48. VRR, QMS, ALLM, and QFT are now all optional. There are already Chinese manufacturers making 2.1 gaming monitors that only support ALLM and nothing else so read the fine print. Luckily I don't need arc of any kind and this is why I think eARC is stupid. The entire point of ARC is to get sound from the display to the surround sound system. That means internal apps and TV sounds like menu sounds. How many people here use internal apps? If so, they are limited to streaming services that do Atmos over DD+ which is possible over ARC. No streaming services use lossless formats that I'm aware of and certain displays do t work well with certain sound bars. I had the ARC but returned it. To many dropouts and finding that I was limited by the displays licensing drove me to the Sony. Dedicated HDMI audio.from VRROOM to HDMI 1, nothing from Sony eARC output to the display. All audio/video devices are external as I hate Tizen. So. I don't get menu sounds, that is the only thing I am missing. Ok get DTS-X passthrough, my VRROOMs main HDMI 2.1 video output is plugged into input 4, which is the only 2.1 port. EVERYTHING just works. If you think you are getting DTS-X then google your displays eARC capabilities. It's shocking how many displays don't pass through DTS of any kind via eARC even though any HDMI switch/matrix can. It's so stupid that I will avoid eARC at all costs. Here's a list, it's surprising that the LG C1 and Samsung QN90A do t passthrough DTS of any kind, not even over optical. The sad thing is optical.could.have been updated to handle lossless formats but no copyright protection. Heck, most professional gear uses SDI which is a copper cable that can do 4K HDR 60hz.over 50 meters. Why can't we use SDI? People will say price but it would be dirt cheap if they did t make you but a 5K+ moded 4K Blu-Ray player plus a video capture card that has an SDI input and that's not exactly a "normal" setup. Honestly, what does HDCP stop? HDFurys products can bypass all HDCP by faking the EDID, similar to how they can get Dolby Vision to a non.Dolby Vision display like my Samsung via a capable LLDV source (low latency Dolby Vision, Google it). Warner sued and lost. Every product they come out with can bypass all HDCP by simply faking the EDID of a display saying it's compliant with whatever version. www.rtings.com/tv/tests/inputs/5-1-surround-audio-passthrough

It's kind of neat that they can run on batteries for 10 hours per Sony and get 90 minutes of audio after a 30 minute charge. It makes speaker placement super convenient. I do hope they charge via USB C. Nobody wants their rears going out half way through a movie. That and they are going to be 600 bucks and a lot might be due to the battery tech. @@wissamleo Thanks for confirming. From the article I read it mainly pointed out the up firing speakers on the upcoming rears which lasted 10 hours on a full charge and 90 minutes for a 30 minute charge. That certainly makes it more flexible. I just hope Sony uses USB C. It would just add to the flexibility because I got a 15 foot USB C cable and it can do a 100w with zero issues. With that said, the new rears could need more power than that to charge quicker considering the A7000 uses 500w just for the sound bar. I can look to see how the set of 4 speakers that Sony is selling are powered. Honestly I would like 2 of those for rears based on reviews but they only come in a pair of 4, require a dedicated sound box to run HDMI through and are difficult to get, at least they were a month or two ago. On a sidenote I'm really glad that I can use my HDFury VRROOM dedicated HDMI audio output (non ARC) to HDMI input one or two on the Sony and plug the dedicated video output directly to my Samsung Neo which I havee had nothing but issues with when trying to use eARC regardless if the Sony is hooked up through the HDFury as it also has a dedicated HDMI ARC/eARC audio output or hooked directly to the displays eARC port which is 2.0b on input 3 while the only 2.1 port is input 4. The US version was gimped as the European version has 4 HDMI 2.1 inputs. That and now that QD OLED displays are right around the.cormer I wish I had waited but that's always true for electronics and no prices have been announced so it could be pricey. That and first gen typically has some type of issue but QD OLED seems like it's going to be amazing but time will tell. That and I simply couldn't bitstream DTS of any kind. One article I read said the displays can only pass through formats the TV supports so no issues with Dolby of any kind but DTS was being converted to PCM when hooked directly to my Samsungs eARC input although I never confirmed that was the issue. I also had some audio cutouts but I'm 99 percent sure it's a Samsung issue. I had issues with the Sonos ARC with the Samsung also but since it didn't have a dedicated HDMI input I couldn't utilize this workaround. I don't use the TVs smart apps, everything is external so I could care less about the getting sound over eARC to the Sony that is only coming directly from the Samsung Neo. After that no dropouts and it' does bitstream DTS-X along with any other form of DTS, no audio dropouts and works perfectly. I've always hated ARC/eARC because its standards seem to be pretty non existent and different displays have different issues with certain sound bars or receivers with ARC. I would have preferred a dedicated non ARC/eARC HDMI audio out or they had updated fiber cables as they could easily be updated to get the bandwidth that any format needs but it doesn't have HDCP so they never did. If Google fiber can get speeds of 2Gbps down and 1Gbps up, there is no valid reason besides the lack of HDCP that HDMI has.

The HT-A9 Home Theater System is supposed to give an amazing immersive effect but they are hard to ge right nowt and more expensive (not by much) than the HT-A7000.You also have to purchase the sub as the set just has the 4 speakers. I was personally disappointed in the Sonos ARC and returned it. It was just the sound bar, no sub or rears. The HT A7000 blows it away with just the sound bar in place. I'm waiting for the new battery powered up firing rears that Sony will be releasing this summer for the HT A7000 and the A5000 sound bar from Sony. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/m66TndmVrMjFkWQ.html

This is great channel but I dislike how he always compares any soundbar to his proper AVR Home Theater which any soundbar cannot compete with. The HT-A700 alone could be a price of 1 single Tower Speaker or Center channel or a Sub. Soundbars is a nice alternative for a home theater if you can’t have a full on AVR plus speakers plus wires.

I read that the sun has deeper bass with this than with the ht- 9. Even though the sub was the same, sw5. It was attributed to the fact that the circuit box that comes with the 7000 perhaps has different circuitry compared to the one that comes with the ht9. Did you notice this??? If so, is it possible to use the 7000 box with the ht 9?

No, but Sony announced 2 new rears for the HT-A7000/A-5000 that will be out this summer. They are pretty much 2 A9 but smaller and 90W. They also have a battery that Sony claims lasts ten hours on a full charge and 90.minutes on a ten minute charge. Sony also announced that they will be bringing the same 3d mapping software that the A9's use for the Ht-A7000/5000 this summer, which is when the new rears come out. It works out to be the same as the A9's once you add it all up. While I know the battery will lose charge over time it will make speaker placement fun and they can be plugged in at all times if you don't care. They have built in mics so it sounds like Sony is updating the HTA7/5 to be the control box for their 3d mapping software. Personally, I think this will work out better as the HT-A7000 does a great job of the phantom front right and left speakers. I can't speak for the sub, I'm going to get one eventually but I personally think people give Sony a hard time for calling the two rectangular speakers one sub but when doing a bass sweep from 100hz to 20hz with just the soundbar and an SPL meter it really didn't drop of until around 45 to 50hz which for just a Soundbar, is very impressive. They are kind of stepping on the toes of the people who bought the current rears but Sony does that from time to time. electronics.sony.com/audio/soundbars/all-soundbars/p/sars5 The SA-RS5 speakers work with our latest compatible soundbars using up-firing speakers and wide directivity woofers for 360 Spatial Sound Mapping to create multiple phantom speakers around your room. Not sure if it matters but Sony announced new rears for the HT-A7000/A5000. They are essentially a pair of mini A9's that are 90W but are also battery powered. Sony claims 10 hours on a full charge and 90 minutes on a 10 minute charge. They are also bringing the same 360 mapping technology to the A7000/A5000 when those are released this spring. I know the batteries will lose their charge over time but it will make some fun speaker placement. Like the A9'S, they have a dedicated mic and a button to recalibrate. Total cost works out to be the same as the A9's with no Sub so it's enough for me. I was honestly thinking of returning the HT-A7000 based on the A9 reviews but they were/are currently impossible to get and now that they announced the new rears, and bringing the same 360 technology to the A7000/A5000 I'm sticking with the A7000. The phantom left and right fronts are great and the upfiring speakers do a good job but it lacked that 360 effect and I didn't get the original rears as they were essentially any standard 5.1 rear speaker made in the last 20 years but wireless. No upfiring speakers or side speakers. electronics.sony.com/audio/soundbars/all-soundbars/p/sars5 Optional rear speakers featuring 360 Spatial Sound Mapping for use with HT-A7000 or HT-A5000 Soundbar² • Direct wireless connection with HT-A7000 or HT-A5000 Soundbar • Built-in battery with up to 10-hour battery life and quick charging • Immersive audio from up-firing speakers • Activate Sound Field Optimization with OPTIMIZE button • Total 180W4 power output brings music and movies to life • Flexible layout - no power outlet needed • Omnidirectional Block Design with room-filling sound • Wall mount-capable rear speakers

hi everybody, first of all: I'm a noob so sorry in advance if my doubts seems quite stupid for someone. So, I've bought the HT-A7000 and this is my first soundbar ever, bought for good reviews and perfect compatibility with my Sony Bravia XR-55A90J, which is connect to the soundbar via eARC and S-Center Speaker In. First of all, is it a good choice tu use the TV as a center audio or is preferable to use the central channels of the soundbar? As I said I don't have idea how it works as this is my first soundbar, but it seems to have low volume, especially when I try to play dolby atmos tracks via tv app of TIDAL (meanwhile streaming it from my iPhone is ok), is it normal? I was expecting a "boom" effect. Regarding streaming to soundbar, do you guys think it's better use TIDAL or Apple Music? if I have understood well, TIDAL has this 360cast that should be more immersive (also if I can catch a lot of the difference) meanwhile Apple music has spatial sound that I think it's not supported on Sony, correct? Last but not least, in the video at 12:28 there's a screen that explain frequency and engine applied on the video, there's a method to see this output in my tv/soundbar? thanks everybody

It looks like the sound isn't even getting to the ceiling because your screen is mostly blocking the top of the bar. What did you expect? The calibration especially is going to be confused because the sound is smashed between the back of the screen and the wall. I couldn't believe it when I saw you do that. I bought one and had issues with the sub making a loud popping sound - retuned the sub for a replacement and it still made the noise. It wasn’t there every time I used it but at least 50% of the time and when it was, it ruined the experience. Spoke to Sony who weren’t helpful and said they had no idea what the sound was and the service stopped there. I tried to persevere and work to fix it with issues and solutions found on line due to interference etc but in the end I returned it because I paid so much for it and to have the above problems with it and Sony, shouldn’t be my problem to fix. I returned to the Sonos ARC. I was underwhelmed by the sound. Especially music. Sony is much better, at least for me. That and it can be sent a bitstream signal for any sound format in existence today. The extra 2 HDMI outputs help as I can just use HDNI1 and forget about ARC/eARC which is frankly a mess, especially considering I don't use the displays built in apps or need menu audio so it's kind of pointless but I had major issue with both the Sony and Sonos on my Samsung. Apparently, eARC can only pass through audio format the display supports. Well, not many support DTS of any kind so it was getting converted to PCM. Really? I don't get bitstream DTS through eARC because Samsung doesn't pay the licensing fees? That's idiotic. When plugged into HDMI 1 it bitstream.everything. This is a huge advantage for the Sony. Better setup options as you do t have to have iOS to calibrate which is a bad move by Sonos. Especially considering it has a built in mic for voice assistants. Why can't it use this for calibration. I agree Sonos pushed the envelope regarding wireless systems and software as wireless speakers were a joke 10 years ago but now they aren't. I just hate ARC/eARC. Why can't they just put a dedicated HDMI sound output on the display that works regardless if its ARC or non ARC. If you don't use your displays internal smart apps there is zero reason for ARC or eARC. All it does is get the displays sound to the arc device and it seems like it works better using the displays built in apps which always suck compared to a dedicated streaming box like the shield pro or ATV4K.

More happy with my purchase now. One of the few things I didn't like about the Sony was the rear speakers didn't have any upfiring or side speakers. Just a regular rear channel speaker made in the last 20+ years. Now they are coming out with essentially HT-A9 rears that can run on battery for 10 hours and 90 minutes of listening time on a 10 minute charge (per Sony). They are 90W and won't be out until summer but truly wireless will make for some fun speaker placement. They look 100 percent like the A9's, just smaller and not 125W. Considering how much the A9 setup goes for. It's not terribly priced either considering the A9 reviews. electronics.sony.com/audio/soundbars/all-soundbars/p/sars5 The SA-RS5 speakers work with our latest compatible soundbars using up-firing speakers and wide directivity woofers for 360 Spatial Sound Mapping to create multiple phantom speakers around your room. When you’re surrounded on all sides by multiple phantom speakers within an optimized sound field, you’ll hear every sound with incredible intensity. It’s like you and your living room are inside the movie. Up to 10-hour battery life and quick charging7 With up to 10 hours of battery life when fully charged you can set these speakers without worrying about an AC cable. You can charge them out of sight and bring them out when you need them. And if you’re in a hurry, just 10 minutes of charge will give 90 minutes of use

Usual Sony overpriced performance. I'm not even bothering with a soundbar because anything less than $600 is simply lacking in basic proficiency and will never have true surround sound. Most TV's already have virtual surround sound DSP built-in anyway. So I will make do with some cheap hifi powered bookshelf speakers and a separate subwoofer, both from dedicated loudspeaker manufacturers.

I'd only have a bar, I hate subs and speakers. That one is way more than I'd ever need. Only a moron would pay that much for a sub and extra speakers. I'm fine with the speakers in the LG G3

I agree with you that the Samsung 950a is a much better system than the Sony HT-A700 with surround and sub, The Samsung is far superior in just about everything it does. Purchased the Sony system to see how it compared against the 950A and it was like night and day, Terrible centre channel noise and rear surround , how can Sony get it so wrong. It does look better than the Samsung but thats about it .Sent straight back very dissapointed.
