I had mine last christmas. This camera is great. The menus are a little pain in the ass sometimes but with a little poke, you'll get used to it. I, at least, dont mind that it lacks dials like the usual slrs have, but that's just me. Im very happy with this camera. Thanks for the review

@AuraQualic It has a dedicated video button, it'll shoot in whatever mode you have it set for, including manual, or any of the specialty modes that and continuous auto-focus means it's actually more capable than the Canon DSLR's in video mode.

I just got this camera recently, I can I am a noob, and been a cyber-shot user for the 7 years. I wanted to upgrade to a canon rebel T3, but found this camera. I had to give it a go, and bought this on a whim. I was feeling a little buyer remorse for not getting the Canon, but your review has put me at ease. I feel I made the right choice. I wanted something easy, and I am glad to know that it will suit my needs.

It is an ideal camera on a tripod bean bag or on your lap combined with telephoto lenses I was pretty much impressed with the video quality coming of it. Got it very cheap otherwise I would have opted for 1020 HD movies of the Nex6 or 7, maybe later. Making an lcd shade was a piece of cake and it is a really light combination with a Sigma 400 mm APO. I got the hang now of the custom settings, it is quite quick now to get manual focus assist and it is like looking in a birding scope then.

@Jucketsx The main difference is feature-set, not image quality. Although the new upgraded sensor chip in the NEX-C3 is both slightly more sensitive & has ~2 extra megapixels. If you're looking to UPGRADE your NEX-5, I'd wait just a little longer for the upgrade to the 5 (C5?), or the even "more pro" (not quite officially confirmed), NEX-7 which is supposedly in it's way. The NEX-C3 is a *fantastic* jumping-on point, but I don't see it as an upgrade path for existing NEX-5 owners

Thanks for this wonderful review. Debating between this Sony and the Canon s100. I can't decide if I want to completely sacrifice pocket-ability, but I do desire this level of photo quality. How's the 16 mm kit lens fair? Would it be appropriate for, say, snapping a quick photo of friends at a restaurant, when photo quality is less of a concern?

Impressive camera. It is not surprising that Sony is leading with miniaturizing the body of the DSLR. Nice Screen too. that takes up almost the Whole back of the camera. Awesome Review. I wonder how it will do over time and durability.

@U23Drocs I can understand why you would make that assumption, but as a man who spent a week shooting with it, it's actually not an issue, the balance is different to my DSLR yes, but it didn't actually hamper my ability to get handheld shots in any conditions.

@MinDControlDx No. Neither did the NEX-3. However, the NEX-5 DID, and it's reasonable to assume when its replacement arrives it will too. So if you require exposures longer then 30 seconds (the max of the NEX-C3) then I'd suggest waiting for the new higher end model of the second-gen NEX cameras.

This review sounded more like a really really good ad (as always, if Blunty likes it he really shows how). But it worked. I really really want one. I wish Sony has a lot more range in lenses though.

@onlineadr Both those model numbers are precisely the same camera, only difference is one comes with one lens, the other is the twin lens kit.

I just bought it brand new for $350 with 18-55mm lens kit, I hope it doesnt disappoint me. $350 is a lot for me. I just want it to take good pictures without overwhelming with it's features.

very nice review. i was gonna pick up the nex-5 from sony because it was @$499 (sold out now??!!?=/) but I think I'll spend the extra $50 and pick this one up instead. The newer sensor and features sound pretty good too. thanks xD

A decent review. You have come a long way Blunty. I have always found you entertaining, but have often disagreed with you. I studied Photography and a lot of people in the field scoff at these kind of cameras. It's good to see that you see that they do in fact have a place.

@U23Drocs I own the C3 since a few days now, and you'd be surprised how light weight it is even with the large lens. There's a bulge on the right hand side that makes it easy to hold the camera firmly, even single handedly. It is true tho that it it tips over toward the front when putting it on a flat surface or when carrying it around your neck.

@hattrickster33 Well I've got good news.. you can still use all those Superb Canon Lenses on this ;) You even have the same crop-factor since the APS-C Sensor is identical in size to the on in the 60D!

WOW, i may have to get a Sony for my next camera. I imagine it would make killer videos if i added on a better microphone? Poor sound quality was my one big disappointment on my current Panasonic tz5. Cheers

You've made a review that a photography-illiterate fella like me can understand, as well as cater it to the more intellectual cameraladies&gentlemen. Just adding in a completely useless comment regarding the quality of these NEX babies... Having worked at a Sony Centre when the first models were released and taking one home for a few weeks, they are nothing short of quality. Good to see they're keeping up their game!

Might have the same specs or better (without the mirror that is) than say a comparable Canon SLR like the 60D. Thing is, the lenses just can't compare with the variety Canon offers.
