Last year, Sony's peculiar move to beef up its entry-level NEX left us puzzled, and generally unimpressed. The NEX-F3 was a fine mirrorless camera by most accounts, but its larger footprint left us hoping for a next-gen offering more in line with its predecessor, the NEX-C3 -- a tried-and-true shooter that many Engadget staffers still turn to for review photos and trade shows, thanks to its consistent performance and light weight. We were quite relieved, then, to see that this year's device represented a return to the 2011 design, with a few very compelling additions, to boot.

I just got one as a carry-around/backup camera. I really like it. Fun to use, shoots RAW, very good image quality. If you're thinking of getting one, get it now!

One thing you can do for an overhead shot is to hold the camera upside-down!

I can't remember the last time I took a photo holding the camera over my head, twice I think. From below eye level, that's a different matter, do that all the time.

Is this worth the savings over the Nex 5R? I can get the 3N for $440AU, of 5R for $610? Is the price jump for the 5R really justufiable? Thanks!

No, it will go into transfer mode if you turn it on while charging

Yes it would be awesome, but since it lacks a mic-input you will get very bad sound in outside / noisy situations. Otherwise I love the camera!

First, you can tilt the screen up, and hold the camera upside down. The camera even auto-rotates the picture for you. Secondly, I just figured out how to get it to stop the fake shutter noise! I very carefully took a small drill bit, inserted it into the speaker holes, and fucking jammed it around until it shut the fuck up. I would be very careful when doing this, as it takes a very precise amount of frustration. In all seriousness though, I got it for cheeeeeap because it had a small blemish on the screen, like less than half price, and I don't need the speaker anyway since any video taken will be with a secondary device, as the built-in mics are shit. I certainly don't recommend breaking the speaker, but it worked, and it's now at a much quieter noise level.

Found out what? How to stop the fake shutter noise? I said I stuck a drill bit in there and broke the speaker. I still use it to this day. Great little camera.

How is it that a built in flash is new? The last camera the F3 has a built in flash, I say that because I actually one.

Does this camera support the old Menota lenses from a 35 mm? I know most Minolta fit Sony since Sony bought them out in 2006.

YES! I use a Minolta to Sony Nex E-mount lens adaptor, and it works great!

Patrick Cazer autofocus is kind of bad in low light so you would need a lens with a lower aperture to compensate for that. in good lighting it's amazing though.

Wow! I guess I was right! I clicked on the video thinking "let's give engadget" a chance. Now I see that this is a complete garbage review. What is the most important aspect of a camera? Hmmm.... THE FUCKING PICTURE QUALITY MAYBE?!
