You can have the best of both worlds with this NEW Sony to Nikon MEGADAP ETZ21 adapter. It allows Sony E users to try out a Z body with all their current Sony E lenses or Nikon users to try out Sony E glass on their Nikon Z bodies. Sounds like world peace to me.

I like the Megadap ETZ-11 better than the Techart TZE-01 adapter because of the auto focus and that the Megadap will work on both full frame and APSC/DX Nikon cameras when the Techart only works with the FX/Full Frame cameras. I love using the Sony E 4.5-6.3/70-350mm G OSS APSC/DX lens. I have done comparisons with the Sigma trio 16mm, 30mm and 56mm lens and the Nikkor 1.8 S Primes in my opinion are much better. Especially when focussing faster. The Sony A6100 kit lens (f/3.5-5.6/16-50mm OSS and the f/4.5-6.3/55-210mm OSS)are sharper but slower focussing than the kit lens from Z50 or Zfc 16-50mm. But the Sony E 2.8/16-55mm G is fantastic. This adapter really saves you money until you can afford to upgrade your Z lens for your cameras. Just a reminder if anyone else reads my comment that put your Full Frame/FX cameras in DX mode before shooting because it will not do it automatically using this adapter.

Any idea what kind of weight limit this adapter might be capable of? I'm interested in using my Tamron 35-150mm f2-2.8 with this adapter, but at 1.3kg I don't know. I've seen lenses of up to 950g been used with it. After the reviews I didn't want to trust the Techart adapter as many reviewers said it was rather flimsy.

The ability to adapt E Mount and RF mount lenses (when an adapter comes out- the geometry does work) convinced me to stay with Nikon as I transitioned to mirrorless. I won't have to worry about an awesome lens coming out for another system and not having any ability to use it.

Got my hands on the new ETZ 21. I'd have to say, the performance impressd me. It's a lot better than the etz 11 and really felt like I'm using say a sigma HSM art lens on a sony body. (ofc it's not gonna be exactly like native. But that is pretty close.) The best thing is it finally allowed my 135 GM to work decently on Z bodies. It's a lens that I kept for this sole reason. Nikon may refresh their 105 prime in years to come but this 135 is just a keeper. I'd be happy to use it on a Nikon body and not miss a 105 prime. Plus, nikon only has 1.8s and 1 1.2 lens. This enables you to use all those 1.4 GM primes which are really ticking a lot of boxes for sony shooters. They're light, compact, and highly resolving, and also somewhat reasonably priced. It's a good transition option before either nikon open up their mount to 3rd party of they came out with reasonbly sized and priced 1.4 primes for the masses.

Would love to see a follow up testing a few long Sony lenses with this adapter; like so many transitioning from F mount to Z, the lack of available Z telephoto lenses (supply-wise) is frustrating and challenging. The option to use a Sony tele lens until it’s possible to purchase a Z 100-400 or Z 600 would be a great short term solution.

I use the Megadap ETZ11 with Sone 14mm 1.8 GM lens and it works like a charm. It's definitely worth buying for anyone who would like a certain focal length that is not available on the Nikon roadmap. While it also work stacked with a Sony A-mount to E-mount adapter, the autofocus, at least in my experience, does not work in this setup. I'd love to see autofocus working for older A-mount glass with the new version of this adapter which I understand will be shipping by end of the month.

I’d be interested to see if Minolta AF lenses can adapt via an A to E adapter, then the E to Z adapter. There’s some great older Minolta / Sony A mount glass going sadly unused. Same goes for Sigma SA to Sony E to Nikon Z… :) And while I don’t currently have any Sony E mount lenses, I could also see getting the adapter specifically to use the newest version of the Sigma 85mm 1.4 until a native Z faster aperture 85mm comes out. Nothing against the excellent Z 85mm 1.8 S, but I do have a soft spot for the rendering of the Art series lenses, and that’s a mirrorless only design that you can’t adapt from Nikon F or Canon EF versions.

I started looking into any ETZ adapter once I saw that Tamron 35-150/2-2.8 bc that's a DREAM one-&-done lens for me. The techart one didn't really pass any real-world reviews. When I came across the Megadap ETZ11, I was thisclose to just buying it despite some of the reviews -- that the AF didn't really work great, didn't have known compatibility with the Z9 (the z9 was very much still new) & some horror stories that the adapter would get stuck on the mount/unremoveable w/out damaging it, etc. But now that they upgraded it & I know it works with the Z9, I'm buying it...bc that 12-24/2.8 or 14/1.8 & the 35-150 will absolutely be added to my kit! I'll eventually be a hybrid Nikon + Sony shooter, whenever I can add the A74 to my gear & having native lenses will also help that transition. Best of both worlds!

Thanks so much for this extensive video. How does Megadep get this convertor to work with a flange depth of only 2mm? Something this small would make going using F glass so much more practical. Even thought the F2Z adapter is only 20mm it feels like it extends any type of longer lens too far from the body making the balance funky. For example, a Sigma Art 135 f/1.8 on a Z6ii adds a crazy fulcrum effect making holding the body impossible. Same with the Nikon 105 f/2.8. I know these are heavy lenses, but adapted with the F2Z they became unusable. Anything like this in the pipeline for F glass or Canon EF glass? BTW, thanks for sharing your knowledge and expertise. KZfaq is a much better place because of you!
@dummybert
@dummybert 2 жыл бұрын
The F lenses are designed to create a focused image at a certain distance (sorry, I forgot the english term for it). So if you are using them in a mirrorless (and narrower) camera, your adapter has had to be wider enough so that the focused image is projected on the sensor at the same distance of the lens design, no matter what adapter you use.

Very timely, thanks for your time putting this test together: as a Z6 shooter, I am tired of waiting for the 200-600mm, it has been on the road map for too long! Yes, there were other priorities for Nikon for sure. Yes, I could buy a Z100-400mm + 1.4TC but one can pick up a used Sony A9 with a 200-600mm, a much better combo for wildlife photography, on a similar budget. Now, if I can adapt a used Sony 200-600mm to get precise and reasonably fast AF with that new adapter, I would 100% go for it now. However, the performance of either lens on the Z7/Z6II looked to me rather poor: the focus never adjusted to the background when you suddenly dropped to your knees and was very sluggish moving backwards. That, combined with the observation that the Z9 tracking is so much stickier than his older brothers' make me wonder whether buying a (reasonably priced and readily available) telephoto lens is actually worth it for a Z6/Z7... what do you think, Matt?
@chrishilton6378

We're on the same wavelength here. I'm thinking about that 200-600mm as a stopgap on the Megadap until the longer glass becomes available to the non-NPS peasants like myself in 2023. Here's what I'm wondering: Can you go Z-mount body with TC, Megadap, Sony 200-600mm? Or do you need a Sony TC to go Z-mount body, Megadap, Sony TC+200-600mm? Can you then add in DX mode? Matt (or anyone else) can you give us insight as to how the Nikon TCs play with the Megadap?

@@Willymaze hi Willy, yes I did, and Mark’s experience mimics mine: it is quite an achievement for Megadap but one should not expect miracles on a first or second gen. Z body in AF-C. The AF acquisition and tracking are just so much better on the Z9 that adapted lenses will almost feel like native Z lenses. However, on my Z6, I would not use the Sony 200-600mm for BIF and find my DSLR/F-mount prime a much more reactive combo. Even with perched birds, I get more keepers from my AF-S 300mm prime and TC on the Z6 than with the adapted 200-600. It is a great solution if you only shoot slow moving subjects and other genres and own Sony lenses though.

Well Matt, I think you achieved your steps count for the day. Certainly the adaptor worked, not sure its totally dependable for unattended video work, but will be fine whatever the Z body for stills. In your ‘scientific’ test it seemed the native Z lens outperformed the Sony E lens, which should be expected I guess, and similar issues on the same bodies at the same distance/light condition. So some learning there too. What I was not so impressed with was the colour rendition from the Sony E lens, which made the image look like a 50 year hold transparency film stock, unless that’s the look your going for! Otherwise, its always good to see you.

Ii would love to see the Sony 200-600mm F6.3 used on the Z9, this might be my perfect combination until Nikon bring out their Z 200-600mm F5.6 lens.

@@MarkusGebhard Even if I think is a good lens, doesn't give me any thrill. Found doesn't have lot of personality if you pass me the word. For example, my partner has the Sigma 150-600 sport, and I love more the tones and character. Myself, I moved to a high price and quality lens. The nikon 800 pf . Couldn't got better. But, yes, is another price league. But is just incredible

@@mozzman Thanks Mozman, so much for some insight into this. I don't know this guy at all, never iteracted with him, and I don't think I have ever seen a video or a thumbnail of his. Seth Miranda pointed it out to me the original video and it was a massive shock when I saw the video title and thumbnail, because it is like, I did not even say that. And I am like, I don't think he checked if I had said anything else on this topic, like two months ago. The crazy thing is the 'clip' played 5 times, I know exactly what I am saying, and I said it. It appears to be the focus is on 35mm at the moment and who knows what is next, but that is where I think most of the market is today, and of course in the context of the Z8, which is what the video is about, the video is not even about APSC. And clearly if the Z8 is next (NikonRUMOURS) then APSC won't be next. This is such a 'beat up'. Basically everything is taken out of context, and then he just makes stuff up. And he has since doubled and tripled down, and he keeps going even with very fair comments like yours in his comments he keeps going and then now the live stream ... I am not sure he realises all the pain he is causing behind the scenes. And I literally don't know the guy at all. I don't know if you know but he also posted a link to the video on the PRO NIKON facebook page with 5.2K subscribers, and has been asked to remove it, and so far he has not. I am not a member, but a member has told me. I mean what the hell is going on with this guy? Sorry, but this is a really painful episode for me and the people around me. I'd love to catch up for a chat sometime. Cheers Matt

Ok… now I am curious. Do you have /can you get a Sony 200-600 f5.6/6.3 and adapt it to the Z9 ??? That lens had trouble on the Sony A7riv that was never addressed but was fixed with the Sony A1. I also have Nikon F mount.. but I am thinking of trading my Sony A7riv and now I AM INTERESTED in this

Love the concept. I heard some third party lenses lost autofocus with the latest firmware update for the Z6ii and Z7ii. I suppose there will always be a small lag while they catch up to firmware changes with a firmware change of their own, but it would be rough if you were depending on them.

You are to be commended for the effort, also physical, that you put in performing this test. F4 is fine but I wondered what would we see with an f/1.4 or f/1.8 lens? On one side they let more light in , on the other the margin on focus becomes more strict due to reduced DoF. Nikon really need to start flowing down tech immediatly, the autofocus on anything other than the Z9 sometimes is hard to watch, and those were f/4 lenses. Seeing Canon debut the R7, a crop sensor camera, boosting the same procesor as the top of the line and same autofocus tech shows Nikon that they are really late in the game. Hopefully not too late. The one big mistake Nikon might do is to get stuck self praising the Z9 success forgetting that the world does not stop.

On the outdoor shots on the Z50 the Z lens may be slightly better buy not by much.The Sony 24-120 did not grab and hold focus as well on the Zfc vs the Nikon lens although Sony performed much better on the Z6II in my opinion vs the Nikon Lens which was blurry everytime you backed up. Sony on the Z7 blurred out as you backed up as did the Nikon lens. Sony worked good on the Z9 as did the native Z lens. On the indoor shots with the Z9 all things pretty even I would say, on the Z7 about the same as well, Z6II Sony lens blipped out of focus for a second but overall good, slightly better on the Z glass. On the Z50 the Sony lens fell out of focus when you went back to the door when zoomed out while the Z lens did the same thing. With the ZFC lost focus when against the door with the Sony lens as well as the Nikon lens when Zoomed out. It's interesting to see the changes more when changing the camera body rather than the lens. Looks like this adapter is a very good option for a Sony user to use a Nikon body with their lenses, interesting test.

Nikon is going to discontinue the Z50, and replace it with the upcoming Z30. It doesn’t look like Nikon will follow Canon’s decision to make higher end APS-C cameras like the R7. Canon is also rumored to make an R100 in the sub $600 range. However, I would rather see an updated M50 Mark V, so that it uses those EF lenses.
