PlayStation Portal is here! Sony's remote play handheld has been divisive since its announcement, and we're finally able to test it ahead of its launch this week. We compare the PlayStation Portal's remote play experience with streaming to a phone or the Steam Deck, demonstrate the user interface, and explain the potential and limits of this companion to the PlayStation 5.

Wifi works on airplane mode, but Bluetooth doesn't. Wonder if it actually has a Bluetooth radio due to this.

I got one because it's perfect for my situation. I have a gaming room but sometimes I like to sit around my wife up on the couch or in the bed while she watch her cooking shows. I normally would play remote play on my laptop but this will make it a lot easier just to have one device no bunch of cables extra controller carry around it's all the one bundle. Also when I'm in those situations I don't want to be playing call of duty or anything I want to relax around my wife so this would be good because I don't have to worry about latency if I'm just playing God of war or something like that

And the battery life is really good too. Lots of reviews say almost 5 hours at 100% brightness.

Yep same, the only time I do have to game these days is before sleep in bed. Kids, wife all take priority for sure. Plus now my kids could play the PS5 without having to fire up the projector setup it's connected to which is in my office, about $300 AUD seems fine for me to solve these problems for me

Exactly. But bro this gives a great experience if you want to wake up and play games in bed. In living room or in a hotel. Vita could do all this I agree. But with this they dont have to make games, there's no memory

@@eternalbeing3339the backbone is okay for the price but in no way is it comparable to this. It’s nice for one having your phone separate to the game. I don’t want to not receive texts or calls and what if I want to trophy hunt? Also the backbone is not premium at all. Feels so cheap

What would be cool is if you could use the Portal as a controller for the PS5 directly connected to it just like a standard controller, but you can use the screen simultaneously to view like in-game maps, control Spotify or discord or chat on the PS5 with this device. It would be like a Wii U controller situation. I think that would be awesome.

Disagree with your last point. I don’t want to game on with PlayStation games on my iPad, iPhone, PC etc and have to attach other handhelds to them. I want a separate dedicated handheld experience like the portal that is the same or mosfly better than other options with turn on option, lighter than most, better controllers and a larger screen. It’s a device for people who have kids, or have a main tv, or want to game in different parts of their house such as in bed or on the couch and have other devices but want the convenience of the portal.

You can use the PS5 controller with an iPhone. That's all you need. Same controller, so don't know what you mean by "better controller", also lighter than the Portal as shown in this video. Don't understand what you mean by "turn on option" and the bigger screen is the only fair point you made in your whole post, though you could just use an iPad, though I can't understand why you don't want to. Since you said you need to connect other handhelds to them, which makes no sense since you don't have to do that, whatever that even means. This device is practically pointless.

Hopefully the Portal gets cloud streaming support sometime in the future, it seems like the reason there isn't cloud streaming currently is probably because there's no Playstation cloud streaming app for Android. If it gets cloud streaming support I might actually buy it, but I could just use my Steam Deck for both remote play and cloud streaming

@@ImTrans-Former it's actually been rare for me to find ones that aren't supported. The steam page for any game will tell you how it works on Deck. It depends on what kind of games you play, but it's my favorite gadget of the past several years.

@@ImTrans-Formeri love my steam deck. I’ve played everything from fighting to fps, i tried alot of the games i have on console and they all work great. I even download emulators and roms and have a massive retro library i can play. You could also dock it and use a keyboard and mouse if you prefer that. Only thing i dislike about it is the wifi connection seems a little buggy and you do need a internet connection for certain games. But once it gets going, its amazing. I been debating on getting a asus rog ally, i hear it have a more powerful processor and 1080 resolution vs steam decks 720

⁠@@Spo8Lies, almost all PS3 and Xbox360 games don’t work via emulation and I have the Deck. Original Xbox is hit or miss too. It’s good for all the other systems and it’s good for remote play.

not that soon. But it is a shame since Sony is one of the market leaders in OLED tech, so the fact that they couldnt use their own internal tech to put on their device is such a missed opportunity. They could have done it for CHEAP too @@conheo4

@@MakelBelieve Sometimes as a parent you just need to give-up the TV to the kiddos/spouse. This would let them keep using their PS5 in arguably the next-best way*. Definitely a luxury item for the price though. Edit: *While also being in the same room as the kids, which is important to make sure they or your stuff doesn't break lol

PSA: the Portal has no web browser (as of right now) so if you’re on a public Wi-Fi network that needs you to visit their website to agree to its terms of service to access their connection (like any hotel, airport, library, etc.), this is impossible to do, according to IGN. Complete non-starter for me. Wonder if this is something that’s changed in the future

A very brave and honest review norm thank-you 👍 I bought just for ease of use more than anything else, flipping my phone out of its case and strapping on bits of plastic is a pain so a dedicated first party device suits me. Hopefully the video artefact’s can get ironed out or improved but if not …. It seems good enough.

I’ve only detected slight lag when it gets really busy on screen, but it’s minimal. Stick drift, well no more than any other first party controller. The real downer so far is no Bluetooth for headphones! Unless I can’t find it 🤣

In short: 200 for a device: - which has not bluetooth (in 2023!?) so you are forced to buy those expensive sony earbuds - where the Remote Play on the iPhone has a better latency than a device from Sony specifically made for this purpose. - with worse battery life than a PS Vita - where you can see the compression of the stream

Thanks for this clear and to the point review. Just to clarify, let's say you want to use it from a hotel room, would it mean that: a) the PS5 is plugged in and in rest mode (i.e. not completely switched off) at home? b) the game you want to play is a digital version or you have to leave the game disc in the system at all times? c) the hotel's Wifi does not require a login web page to enter personal information preferences, TOS acceptance and password entry?

Airplane mode on a device that only functions when connected to the internet? 🤔 Wouldn't the off button suffice, I mean it's function just as well plus the battery life would be greatly increased

I thought the same thing lol, turn on airplane mode AKA make it completely useless by taking away it's 1 feature 🤣 But it's likely just for convenience since it seems to be a device you're supposed to just leave charged and in stand-by, so an airplane mode toggle actually kinda makes sense for that, but to be honest a hard toggle power off or hard toggle Airplane mode switch would have been a bit better i think.

It might be a legality thing. I don't know anything about it, but I wouldn't be surprised if there were regulations requiring devices that can connect to wifi to have an airplane mode, regardless of it's usefullness.

Hearing that the latency is the same as any other remote play app just killed any interest in this for me. I'm just not able to get a solid enough connection where latency is not an issue, even with good 50mb/s download and upload speeds. Remoteplay is always inconsistent and laggy for me and it sounds like the PS Portal is basically just a remoteplay solution with a screen and controller built in.

I tested remote play on 5ghz wifi with 800 mbit connection and it is still choppy and laggy at times. I was also hoping this would fix it. But I guess it doesn't so this is a pass for me too. If Im going to spend 200 bucks it atleast needs to be near perfect. It's not even close... Amazing how Sony could mess this up... Something this easy to fix

That's why I'm hesitant to get this, lag ruins the gameplay experience especially if you're playing on a highest difficulty in a game that requires fast input button commands, I don't want to be looking at game over screen again and again because of lag, plus for those who play online fighting or first person shooters it makes all the difference and can negatively impact your K/D ratio and or your Win/Lose stats.

Hotspot will work just depends on where you are. Have seen some other tests where maybe you aren't playing Call of Duty but is viable for games where latency isn't vital.

I got mine today (Argos 4tw) and it's..... Great!!! If you have decent enough WiFi (15mbs+) then for SOME people it's a brilliant buy. If like me you have a wife and kids who sometimes want the main tv then this is 100% worth a buy... End of. If you live alone, have your own bedroom etc etc then it's maybe less needed as you can just use the TV whenever you want. Even then though it's great to watch sports, tv series on TV and lay back gaming at same time. Screen is shockingly good as well. Very happy with mine for the price.

Airplane mode seems a bit odd unless it is planned to have some offline features, or maybe it's required. I'm interested to see how the OS modified to do more or have android running on it. Let it do all the streaming services and local content 😅

I own the steam deck but I use Chiaki a lot. I was tempted to buy this as its lighter and has the dual sense controller. Do you think it’s worth it or not really if you own a steam deck?

Do you get latency issues with the steam deck streaming, is it similar to streaming to your pc using the remote playapp? I have this preorder but thinking of cancelling and just buying the oled deck.

@@bighoss7437 I used to get latency issues with my iPad but with the steam deck it’s a really solid experience. The screen isn’t 16:9 though so you do get some borders. It will be less annoying on the oled model as the blacks will be true black. It’s uncomfortable to hold the steam deck upright for me though for any longer sessions. It’s not terrible though, comfortable grip.

I'm a little confused on how I cam remote play via Hotspot, which uses data, but I can't remote play using data. Unless Hotspot uses wifi somehow?

The portal doesn't have any kind of sim card. It needs to be connected to WiFi or a mobile Hotspot (which is essentially WiFi)

I need more stream quality/latency benchmarking. For example, chiaki with HEVC and hardware decoding is much better at giving high bitrate and low latency than the official PS Play app on Windows/Android. Same for the PS Play app on Android, the stream is much better. I need to know that this has addressed those same issues, and it's not just similar to the official remote play app on Android, which isn't as good as the alternatives.

Stream deck doesn't support all the buttons of games, l3, touchpad, I had a terrible time playing on it and quit. Maybe it can be fixed with an update, but just recently it wasn't playable. Also you can't open playstation menu.

What if your home wifi is fiber? My experience with the backbone was having fiber home wifi I could not remote play at home or anywhere else without having to change the IP on my modem. This is pretty discouraging. Any information helps

I love it can’t wait to get mine tomorrow the other options to use for remote play suck to me honest the phone dock looks wild and I have steam deck and use chiaki certain games you need the PS pad to get to maps and there is no control setting to get that.

@@Jumpman67 He's talking about bitrate. The video mentioned a lot of compression artifacts, meaning the bitrate isn't great. At 1080p with high bitrate you should not see any of that.

I want this because I use my phone too much as a dedicated device to be able to really enjoy remote play on it. Grabbing this while my wife has a movie on seems much more practical than having to hook up my tiny phone to a Backbone, while getting consistent notification interruptions and which I then can't charge while playing.

Might as well just get a steam deck. I was hoping this would perform much better with latency but sounds like the iPhone app out performs it. At least with the steam deck you get to play almost any emulated game plus newer games in addition to remote play with the same performance as this portal.

As someone that doesnt like remote play on my phone or laptop this is perfect for me, esp at only 100 bucks more than the backbone while having the haptic feedback. That being said I do wish it was an OLED screen. Airplane mode is funny though as its just an off button lol gotta imagine its a hint at an update for things to come. Just let it access ps plus streaming in the future and itll be golden

You would think a device that is singularly focused on remote play would have a significantly robust wifi chip, or, if this was a concept they were playing with while designing the PS5, a high bitrate direct connection between the two.

I knew all this. And this is exactly what I wanted. Its not in competition with Switch or any other hand-held. Its an accessory for the PS5. Thats all. I need it for when i stay in families house or hotels. Also gaming while in bed while my wife is watching a movie i dont want to watch lol

Ireland has top tier wifi infrastructure for the most part. Easily getting 120mbps speeds on city wide wifi in most areas and 600mbps+ on 5G. Yet this will still not sell, it's shit

Most isp provide some type of hotspot WiFi service when you’re not home. As long as you’re a subscriber you can connect to any of that company’s access points. So unless you’re camping in the woods, as long as you have WiFi at home you pretty much have it everywhere. Xfinity hotspots has worked well for me for years.

It would be cool to use this as a second screen for inventories a la wii u. Might be worth getting if there's a controller mode(Bluetooth?). For more life, it should be allowed to connect to a PC as a normal controller and customize whats on the screen(giant touch pad, mouse pad, keyboard). Of it wasnt so limited to just ps5 only, there could be a lot of use cases for Portal on PC

Remote play on a phone/ipad works great with my very fast WiFi. 6 However, reviewers fail to mention one of advantage of this device is no interruptions from text, apps, notifications, or the dreaded robo call. I wish it was a PS Vita successor but I’m giving it a shot.

I had preordered one of these, but ended up cancelling it, and getting the rokid AR glasses and play on a giant screen instead. It doesn’t sound like there is any benefit on getting this device instead of playing through the remote ps app, at least with AR glasses you are playing on a movie theater screen instead of small tablet.

would be good to get more detail on how it compared to chiaki4deck. I know if you don't have a deck this is a lot more affordable, but for those that do, is this better? I've had some minor image stability issues with chiaki4deck - either flickering white, sometimes screen goes green and takes a while to slowly wipe away, or macroblocking. This is with wired PS5 and 5GHz network

Same I love my steam deck for all my handheld gaming, but Chiaki is just terrible on it with the lag and flickering light, the audio messes up for me a lot too. This device would be perfect as I could use my Steamdeck for PC games and emulators, and then the Portal for all my AAA playstation games. Between those 2 and the switch I have my whole library on handhelds

I’ve been too much of a chicken to use Chiaki on my Deck, not sure how Sony feels about 3rd party remote play apps and don’t want to risk my account. But the fact that this doesn’t have any better performance than a phone/tablet remote play app means I won’t be getting it yet. If they put a PS+ cloud app on for streaming, I’d consider it.
