This video shows the repair of a no power issue on a Sony PSX DVR console. The details for the 2 replacement ribbons are as below:
Rear light bar ribbon:
12 Pin, 200mm length, 1mm pitch.
Front panel to motherboard ribbon:
28 Pin, 150mm length, 0.5mm pitch.
*I'd recommend something slightly longer if you can find them, 150mm is literally as short as you can reasonably get away with.*

Wow this video is how I found out what a PSX DVR even is. I always thought anyone saying PSX was referring to PS1 since that was it's codename.

Most people aren't aware of it either mate - what makes it weirder is that Sony Computer Entertainment's internal codename for the PS1 was the PSX after Nintendo disappeared which is where that comes from. I'm guessing it was the Consumer Electronics guys who then used the moniker years later for this. Part of me wishes it fell to the SCE guys for the development of this thing - it could, should have been so much better!

The English translation was not as bad as I was expecting just a few file swops after using free mcboot to gain access nice machine when working Interested to see the hard drive backup and maybe clone it and archive the hard drive image as I know mine will go one day

hello i know this video is old i also probably think no one cares about this system anymore but i started a few 4chan threads and after doing some digging the encryption for the hardrive can be broken and you can find the codes for the system of a website called ps2 dev wiki basically you can like either swap the board over to an identical drive or like you can flash the firmware on the drive but im pretty inexperienced at this type of thing hopefully this like brings up some type of new info or something

The reason there is very little info on these is because of whats in them. The laser assembly is unique and the HDD is encrypted(and undefeated so far). Lasers and HDD are both the main points of fault for these. Yes there is region locking for both DVD and PS2 games, but even so without a replacement working laser it won't matter much. Last I knew, the only way to replace these lasers was from another working system, same with the HDD. But there are married software files in the HDD that I think might be updateable after the fact. Nothing that will prevent it from mostly functioning anyway. If the HDD dies, your system is a brick until you get a replacement. I am not sure if anyone has managed to fully clone a drive and have it work either. These are such "unique" systems that the hacking scene just isnt really there. I am sure i read somewhere that the only hdd that you may possibly get to work with this unit is the one from the Final Fantasy XI HDD boxset (Japanese release with its own network card)

Indeed - this is an option for a failed drive as these also have the same Sony-based firmware on them. It'd be nice not to have to rely on these though as they're not much different in age from the original disks. :-(

Is great to see you sorted out problem.This system is outdated but interesting and exotic.Just wonder what is limitation on hardrive capacity and posibility of cloning system to ssd.You can use freemacboot memory card and use whatever region you have.Wish you get rid of health problem too.All the best.

The drive is encrypted and has been undefeated for years, not enough real hackers care. It’s well known you should run these with free mcboot and usb hard drives or some other means of file loading

Cheers guys! Indeed that's the issue - as they were such a limited run there's not much attention ever been spread on them apart from one or two devs but they quickly lost interest from the looks. A real shame. :-(

You are lucky to get one with a still-functioning HDD - it's a common failure item and given that the drive has custom firmware that implements Sony's MagicGate DRM system not really replaceable by anything else. Worse, because the DEV9 interface on the PS2 side is passed through to the DVRP when the DVR doesn't come up it kills the rest of the system because the disc becomes inaccessible and the OSD is loaded from it. Trying to hack around it is hard because being DRM crap it's entirely undocumented.

I’m trying to fix mine aswell it did’t power on, F4001 fuse was blown along with a damage IR ribbon flex just like yours with a hole. Looks like the previous own worked on it and forgot to tape it to the panel. I replaced the blown F4001 fuse aswell its damaged ir ribbon cable along with the top panel ribbon and i managed to get it to power on but i get the Hard Error Flashing Red and Green Light. It turns on and the HDD Access led also does turn on from time to time. Not sure causing the caps on the PSU look good.

You need to connect the ribbon to the top shell, the one that has the HDD indicator lights. If it's not connected, the console is a paper weight.
