I love the insides on these old machines, especially the head drums - they look like one big piece of metal compared to the thin ones with the circular lip on newer/cheaper machines, so solid feeling!

Is the dropout compensator working on this machine? I would not expect the white lines to be so apparent during tape drop-outs. I have 10 cats at home believe it or not...

Hi Dave, Being that your area got hit with that snow storm , how did it go with getting to the vet - seeing as what a mess the roads were in on the news? Up here well we got about 3 inches of snow in the Carriboo - but now are going through a deep freeze from Arctic air and Night time temperatures dipping down to -37.7 degrees. A bit Nippy - Wouldn't you say??

No snow by morning. Made it on time and was relieved of another 2200.00. Crooks. Now they are talking even more for more treatment.

@@JESUSCHRYSLER5512 as I am finding out. So far I am in about 4000 and the vet is awaiting final test results but is recommending chemo. I don't even want to know what that will cost. Donations from viewers have helped for sure. It's still going to hurt finiancially, just not as much. I have been doing a fair bit of video archiving this past month too so that is also going into the kitty fund. Loki is eating again but the road to recovery is likely a long one.

Is the power supply putting out any voltages on the output headers. Those leaky caps leaked corossive material which soaked through the power supply board and corroded away the copper which will been to be repaired.

There is a new trend for those hi-fi VHS machines. Hi-fi enthusiasts buy them to record audio on VHS tapes. Apparently that's the cheapest way to get the sound of a reel to reel player. I think that's the selling point for those players
@12voltvids
@12voltvids Жыл бұрын
They do a fairly good job for audio recording especially those machines with manual audio level controls. They can do a fantastic job. Some early machines had an audio only mode which turned off the video circuits.
@dimitarlazarov2094
@dimitarlazarov2094 Жыл бұрын
@@12voltvids Indeed. A lot of people are waking up to that and those machines will become very desirable in the near future. I don't know if they can be compared to studio quality r2r but I'm sure VHS hi-fi surpasses most of the non high end reel to reel machines. I guess the formulation of the VHS tape is far superior and with the appropriate recording bias higher bandwidth and snr can be achieved.

@@dimitarlazarov2094 VHS HiFi is actually more comparable to FM radio than analog recording. The audio modulated 2 fm carriers in the 1.3 - 1.7mhz range. It is first compressed to about half the original dynamic range and then expanded on playback. These carriers are presented to the spinning heads and laid down as diagonal stripes just like video. Unlike video however there is no natural break in the signal. Video resets from the bottom to the top of the frame every 1/60 second and this is when one head hands to the other. The HiFi do not and there is usually a flutter at 60 hz. You can hear in spring certain sounds. It's pretty noticable. I think even the lowest end r-r operating at 7.5ips will sound better despite lower snr. VHS HiFi mutes the audio momentarily during this¹ transition which masks the switching noise generated. Many do record on VHS but it is not better than other recordings like dat

@@12voltvids Aha. So VHS hi-fi uses helical scanning rather than a continuous separate track as per mono VHS. Another drop of snake oil in audiofools drink
@12voltvids
@12voltvids Жыл бұрын
@@dimitarlazarov2094 yes correct. VHS Hi-Fi uses a separate pair of heads and what is called deep later azimuth recording. The 2 heads are +30 and -30'. The video heads are -6 and +6 respectively. This creates 36 degrees asthma offset between the tracks. The audio FM tracks are recorded first into a deep layer of the tape and then the video is recorded over top at a different angle. It does erase a portion of the signal but because of the vastly different head azimuth there's enough signal remaining to be recovered. Beta hi-fi and 8 mm high five use the same heads to record audio and video they just use different frequency bands and put the audio in a guard band space between the chroma and the luminance signal. 8 mm and hi 8 however do things even differently then VHS and beta. Where VHS and beta use a separate carrier for the left and the right channels 8 mm and height use two carriers one for the left plus right mono signal and the second for the left minus right stereo different signal exactly how FM stereo works. This was done so that mono camcorders would be compatible because the first 8 mm camcorders wish tricky bottle and then they added stereo as an upgrade. 8 mm however also has a reserved section of the helical scan track which has no data in it whatsoever for video and is used for PCM digital stereo. But the PCM digital stereo is only 8-bit at 32 kilohertz sampling so it is considerably poor quality than CD as the frequency response only goes to 15 kilohertz and being 8-bit does not have hi Dad I'm a cranes so they use two to one compression on the analog signal and then expand it after. It does sound remarkably good and clear equivalent to digital audio tape recorded in the lp speed. All Hi-Fi video recorders do use commanding. Beta hi-fi used dbx as their noise reduction system and sometimes you can hear it working in the background. VHS hi-fi use a similar but not quite as aggressive of noise reduction that beta Hi-Fi used very similar to the CX noise reduction used on laserdisk.
