Today we compare the Hisense U8K to the Sony x90L. We have Mini led vs Full Array Local dimming. The U8K is the Flagship for Hisense and the X90L the mid range for Sony. However the Hisense is cheaper at every size. Tell me who you think wins in the comments. Thank you for watching.
Special thanks to Value Electronics for supplying the Sony X90L for extended review. Please consider making your next AV purchase through them valueelectronics.com/#2915 or call them directly at 914 723 3344 and ask for Robert or Wendy and please mention Brian at BRIAN'S TECH THERAPY.

Thanks for the very informative and accurate comparison! Our pro calibrators are working on all of the TVs that will be competing in our 9/30 2023 4K HDR TV Shootout Evaluation event and we all agreed that Hisense's new 2023 U8K very well deserves to be included in our TV Shootout this year. We just received a very nice allocation and they sold out immediately, but thankfully Hisense just shipped our 2nd allocation that will arrive the end of this week. Hope to see many of your members and visitors on your and FOMO's live webcast of our 9/30/23 4K and the 10/1/23 8K TV Shootout events!

Hisense flagship model is the UX. U8K is their 2nd tier model, so this is actually an appropriate showdown between two 2nd tier TV's.

@@tomtube1012 The U8K is Hisense's flagship mass produced TV. The UX is a very limited production, and sold out, and only available in 85" screen size. We have the UX on display at the TRV Shootout and it's next to the TV Shootout wall, but will not be included in on the judges ballots as they are no longer available and were only available in the 85" class.

I was strongly considering the U8K before watching this video, but after watching there's no question. Sony all the way. The reason is simple - the image processor. There is a clarity in the Sony that reveals details (and even contrast) that just isn't there in the Hisense. The Mini-LED can't save it from Sony's superior processor. The colors are also a bit more accurate or neutral on the Sony. Sometimes the colors pop more on the Hisense, but in a slightly over saturated way with less accuracy. I will be paying a little extra to get the Sony, in the 65 inch size.

If you use the custom smoothing setting on the U8K and set both settings to 10, the hisense actually gets a big boost in image quality as the color smearing, motion blur, and blooming are limited by those settings.

Thanks for your helpful side-by-side analysis of these TVs. In the RTINGS reviews of these two models. The Hisense U8K actually scored slightly better than the Sony X90L in some of the tests that RTINGS performed. As much as I admire Sony's excellent image processing, motion handling, and upscaling that may ultimately present a finer - and perhaps more realistic - display overall, lower prices on the U8K models could persuade me to choose Hisense. The decision for buyers would depend on individual wants and needs. If you want superior image processing, the X90L is probably the better choice. If you need a brighter but still accurate TV that also handles reflections well in a room with high ambient light, the U8K is a great option.

Took a chance on Hisense two years ago with a 65”. It has performed excellent and I’m very satisfied with it. Can’t say the same thing for TCL took a chance on their 75” TV and even before it reached its second year the screen failed. BTW their reply was oh well. So I’ve spent a month studying the Hisense 75” U8K, Samsung, LG and Sony. I have a soft spot for Sony I think they make outstanding products. After reading Hisense’s philosophy on their products they earned my respect. Their U8K is so advanced especially for their pricing. Nevertheless what put me over the top was their ability to add Dolby’s Atmos system to their 75” U8K. Their sound is amazing and no one offers that sound at the present time. Thank you for your video it is very helpful.

@loki76
@loki76 8 ай бұрын
Besides the slight extra blooming, the X90L is superior in image processing and ironically often have better contrast, despite the fewer zones. Because Sony KNOWS how to make use of it. Hisense just don't, they just have the more zones and let that on it's own do the work. But there is no "fine tuning" of it. Several examples of the 90L having deeper black and contrast in some scenes. 2:45 look at the left hand side, deeper black on 90L. 2:55 higher detail and more contrast on 90L 3:06 this is where 90L loses because fewer zones and U8K wins. The U8K don't need processing to handle this because most is just dark. But 90L cannot over come it as easily. 3:21 more deeper black on the guy on the left armor on 90L. Also better specular highlight of his face. 6:44 way higher contrast on the 90L in that lava scene. This show cases how Sony can use it's algorithm to make most of it. The U8K have more zones and should be better. But they cannot make use of it here. It just treats the whole area as brighter. They have less fine tuning. 7:20 again more contrast and better color gradients on the 90L. There is seldom if at all I can list a scene where U8K beats the 90L. It's only in those few select scenes. But, the key part is that the 90L is better in a room with some light. That way the lifted blacks in the "bad scenes" won't be noticeable. In a dark room they will be and can be distracting. Same with black bars which will look lifted. I would in that sense argue the 90L is better, because it wins in most image content and loses only in the worst scenarios. But it will 100% of the time win in picture processing. Hence over all it will be better 80% of the time. It basically comes down to, do you prefer a superior image quality in processing or less blooming. The U8K will have less blooming, that's a given. But it won't have as nice upscaling and detail of objects and faces etc. The Sony XR processor is the best in the business.

I have both the U8K 75" and the X90L 75" and if I could return the Sony and buy a second Hisense, I would. Getting to see them side by side in my house, the U8K is easily the better TV. It's not even a contest. I don't blame anybody for going with Sony because they know and trust Sony, but the Hisense is just the better TV and there is no getting around it. The X90L has horrible blooming. With the U8K, I can't see blooming at all. The blacks are almost the same as OLED. The contrast is perfect. Motion processing is excellent. I hope this helps answer questions to those considering between the 85QM8, 85U8K, 85X90CL, and even the 77S90C. I started back in July with the 85QM8, and I loved the contrast, brightness, and vibrant colors. Hated the horrible streaming upscaling capability that literally made certain content like MLB game unwatchable because it couldn't even make the face of the hitters recognizable. Also, poor EOTF would overblow certain bright images to the point that all details were lost, so I returned it one month later. Tried the 77S90C, better than 85QM8 at everything, except brightness during day watching and SIZE, I didnt think the 8" drop was going to be that noticeable, but it was....and currently, I don't think its worth paying 2-3X the price for an 83" oled. I currently have both the 85U8K and the 85X90CL side by side agaisnt by wifes wishes 😂. Like most people, I felt cheated by the 85X90CL with a FALD display and probably only 150 dimming zones at best for $2,000...So I had to try to the 85U8K Mini-LED with 1300 dimming zones, 1500 NITS, QLED, and an 8.5 rating from RTINGS.COM. After a couple of days of playing with them side by side, (not hearsay), for the purpose os STREAMING only, I have NOT tried gaming, the X90CL has better colors, including blacks period! Side by side, same content, same image, the colors of the 85U8K appears dull/washed out in EVERY mode because of the way Hisense is choosing to present the colors this year. FYI, FOMO, along with other youtubers and even others in the comments, had mentioned that, but I guess I'm a bit stubborn and refused to 100% believe it😅. I'm not a professional calibrator, but I have some experience with tweaking tv settings...I mean come on, this year alone this is the 4th tv since July chasing my best picture quality valued tv 😁, since I probably wont upgrade again for another 3-5 years I hope. I have never owned a SONY until the 85X90CL, I used to think that they were overpriced for what you were getting, and based on reviews from youtubers and RTINGS.COM, they were not worth it imo. Based on the fact that the clarity is soooooooo much better in most content on the X90CL over the U8K, dont believe me? Try streaming Darkwing Duck from Disney plus side by side 😆, also what's with the dullness of the U8Ks colors including blacks 🤦🏽‍♂️, and yes, im also comparing them to the QM8 and the S90C...The 85U8K is sadly going back...I had such high hopes for it considering I waited forever to get my hands on the 85U8K. I hope that answers some of your questions. But if in doubt or curious like I was, order both and put them side by side like I did 👋.

How was the blooming on each?
@jrerobert
@jrerobert 7 ай бұрын
@williamnelson7528 The S90C QD-OLED has no blooming. The QM8, I never noticed or bothered me. The U8K has less blooming than X90CL, but blacks and ALL colors are ALWAYS a bit lifted a bit. On the X90CL, the only time I noticed the blooming is in an all black or dark screen with small bright objects, like credits at the end of a movie. Otherwise, im surprise by how good of a job it does with its algorithm. But because of the processor, the X90CL is by far the best choice for streaming. Neither of the 4 TVs is perfect. They all have their own issues. Had the U8K had better colors, I probably would have kept it, but since the X90CL is clearer, faster, has better colors including blacks, and the blooming is only noticeable in only certain scenes, for me it was the best choice. Another thing that the X90CL gives you and the other 3 TVs dont, at least not while using its own built-in apps, is a TON of watching mode options. The S90C did not have Dolby Vision, and although I dont care much for it, the option is there on the X90CL. Oo both the QM8 and U8K, ALL Dolby Vision content is limited to only Dolby Vision, which is a problem when watching TV during the day because it's too dark. The X90CL allows you to switch customize EVERYTHING! switch out of Dolby Vision, adjust colors to acurate or condenced, and blacks to details or deep. The other 3 TVs did not give you all those options WITHIN the TVs built-in apps.

That is the amazing part with Sony. It actually have better contrast than the U8K in almost all the content, except when it really needs the extra zones, which is actually very seldom. You would 90% of the time have a better picture on the Sony, including the contrast despite the low zone count. It's just Sony magic and also far better picture quality. Hisense needs to work on their processing and algorithms. TCL and Hisense just try and 'brute-force' their way with more zones, but don't know how to use them properly.

If the Sony is not in your price range at this size get the savings with the U8K, otherwise especially since you do exclusively streaming the Sony will be worth the higher cost, but definately make your decision based off the 65 in models.

Motion performance without judder smearing tearing and the ableness to upscale is biggest for me. Everything else can be tweaked enough on most these new models to your liking but the ability to handle fast motion and compression for streaming is so key. Not sure why nobody seems to review much more of these key factors instead of displaying slow mo pictures that even would look fine on tvs from a decade ago 😅

Hey Brian, great video. Quick question, I notice you pointed out that the latest update for the x90l enables local dimming in menus. Was this in the internal google tv OS of the tv or when using an hdmi device? Also, does local dimming toggle on when powering up from cold boot and showing the Sony logo as well? I’ve always found Sony’s decision to turn off local dimming in the internal apps and menus bizarre but if you’re able to confirm they fixed it I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

I just came from a Sony X85J (tuned using some of the same test videos here) to the Hisense U8K (again tuned using some of the same videos). The Hisense has blown me away with it's performance. For the money you can't beat it. An apple TV 4k was used on my end for when I tuned both as apps can differ in quality on just the TV's themselves. Did you use the TV apps or a device to keep the apps standard across the test here? The Sony 55" X85K and the Hisense 55" U8K are the same price with sales at the time of this comment. The Sony 55" X90L on sale sits $350 more than the 55" U8K at the time of this comment. The comparable Hisense to the X85K would be the Hisense U7K and that is sitting $200 lower than the Sony X85K at this time.......now that would be an interesting review.....or lineup all 4 TVs mentioned and have it. Let's take away another $100 off for the Hisense as their current promotion gives you NBA 2K24 Black Mamba edition for free with purchase currently as well.....the value is just astonishing for what you get. The current price of the Sony X90L puts it at the level of the LG C3 OLED. The picture quality of the Sony's are excellent and their video processing is amazing but the question of value to that performance is where they are lacking in my opinion.....with your review showing that.

That's a bit "overblown". There's a give and take with both, but U8K holds its own. It's not a blow out, not even close. X90L is not worth the $300-$400 dollar difference just to pay for a brand name.

As of the date of this comment (11/28) there is only a $200 price difference at 75" at Best Buy. When I maximize this video it seems that Sony has the edge as far as picture accuracy. The blooming is a legit thing but I can't recall how often I have sat through scenes depicting those conditions in movies that linger long enough for this to be an issue. And when he goes into "Cinema" mode, it's not even close in my opinion. Sony's picture looks much better. The reason I am watching this is because I am doing research and now feel like I am going to roll with Sony and treat myself to an upgrade from a 50 LG Plasma to the 75" Inch Sony X90L. Excellent, unbiased comparison. There are many so-called reviewers out there but for me, the side by side comparison is the most informative. The market place changes so fast, it’s hard not to get whiplash. I had the U8K in my shopping cart till I saw this video. The Sony looks superior. So I went for that. Meanwhile, Hisense released the U8N which addresses the weaknesses of the U8K. So now the Sony and Hisense 65” are the same price. I finally settled on the U8N simply because it is the 2024 model. I have one question: I like to edit my IOS SmartHDR photos on a big screen; which non-OLED TV most closely matches Apples’s XDR display?

I've been doing a ton of research in these TV's and others. I've come to the conclusion is the U8K by far is the best TV for the price range, and not even close. BUT if you chose this TV definitely get a good extended warranty. Hisense doesn't have the reputation of other TVs brands for their quality control. So I decided on the 65 in U8K for $900 with a third party 4 year warranty for $112. The next TV that gets rated as highly picture wise as the U8K is the Sony X93L at $1600, so almost $600 more without the extended warranty. Even if you might not need the extended warranty on the Sony it's still a lot more expensive.

Excellent comparison video. You kept using the term 'clarity' to describe the SONY. The term I think you should have used is 'accuracy'. I compared both of these TV's (and the TCL QM8) in person, and the far superior 'accuracy' of the SONY is blatantly evident. The other two TV's can go brighter, and can generate ever so slightly better blacks, but the XR Clear processor, coupled with a few tweaks to settings, makes their processing look far inferior. Simple reality. If you want punchy oversaturated imaging (i.e. inaccurate imaging), the TCL and Hisense give you that for less money. If you demand accuracy of imaging, the SONY is the 'only' choice out of the three.

I think some of these people try to claim other TVs are better than Sony, because they are trying to be different, and Sony is always the top dog. So some people just make up shit. But Brian doesn’t do that. Brian calls a spade a spade. And as far as buying a TV, all I care about is picture quality, I don’t care about sound on a TV because I always pair the TV with high-end surround speakers. My prediction is by 2030, maybe the TVs won’t need surround speakers anymore because technology will have figured it out. There’s always a mad genius waiting in the wings.

Think Sony's are almost always worth the extra money, especially if you're buying a larger size tv. The larger your tv is the more noticeable poor upscaling, inaccurate colors, panel uniformity or local dimming, and even build quality becomes. I love how far both TCL and Hisense have come, but I will always feel like gonna have to deal with some odd quirks and buy an extended warranty just to be safe.

If we fail to do this, we will be stuck with the few electronic giants like Sony and coe, who charge exorbitantly for their products. The competition is GOOD ! If we stand behind Hosense and TCL, I'm sure they will iron out most of their issues in a few years.
