Finally, Sony realised they can utilise their TV and camera divisions to improve their smartphones? These are actual, useful additions. Catching up to LG on camera manual options and reminding me of a time when LG pushed their tech, like being the first out with QHD panels. Now, if Sony can remember they have an audio division too and I can really get hyped about a Sony phone again.

"Walkman" tech you people are talking about are mostly hardware, ie dedicated (proprietary) chips, buttons media control and a walkman port tho? All of them would probably add some sizeable cost on top of the base smartphone build. I also dont think a 4.4 balanced would fit a smartphone frame... Dont mistake me tho, I really would love if Sony could start taking Walkman and Playstation brand into their mobile division again, as long as they dedicate unique hardwares into it.

@@crowmigration8245 IMO, as long as its a snapdragon newer than 820-821 is good for a couple more years. The lacking amount of RAM is what's limiting most phones. 4GB is minimum these days, 6-8 for more freedom.

I certainly love mine but it's the small things that realllly take away from it. The side sense feature works 25 percent of the time, finger print sensor works 50 percent of the time, when using the camera on auto mode the images are hit and miss, the image stabilization in 4k is the absolute worst I have ever used on a cell phone. I still love the damn thing but just don't know if I like it enough to get another sony next time, I still find myself thining about the upcoming pixel 4.

Then what about the battery timing when gaming? Wouldn't there be a huge difference between Xperia 1 and the likes of Note 10+, 11 Pro Max, Mate 30 Pro? And why are you even comparing it with the normal ones? Considering the price, it should be compared with the highest end models, the ones I mentioned above.
@SomeGadgetGuy
@SomeGadgetGuy 4 жыл бұрын
If your qualms are price, why would you pick the Note 10+? The smaller Note 10 is the proper comparison. Unless you're willing to front Samsung an almost $200 advantage just so they can "win"? No one's disputing that phones with bigger batteries perform better. It's the notion that somehow this is unusable because of the higher resolution is something we've seen in Sony commentary since the first 4K Xperia. Of course you take a hit, but the phone is still fine for a daily driver. Of course we will always want a larger battery, but if I had to pick between a Note 10 at $950, and the Xperia 1 (now at $900), I'd pick the phone with better camera control and three times the resolution over the phone with the S-Pen and bigger battery.
@usmantariq7997
@usmantariq7997 4 жыл бұрын
@@SomeGadgetGuy Yes my bad, I was comparing it to Note 10+ and Mate 30 Pro, which is wrong as both are pricier than the Xperia 1. But we can compare it to the S10+ right? That phone comes at the exact same price but still has a big 4200mah battery. And no, I'm not worried about the resolution as 4K only activates when it detects actual 4K content. Most of the time, it probably runs in Full HD, which imo is completely alright and probably the reason why it's getting so much good battery timing even with just 3300mah capacity. At the end, I respect your choice. It's clear that camera is one of your biggest preference. For me, it's not really that important. I actually loved the Xperia 1 so much because of that 21:9 screen. I watch a lot of movies on my smartphone and that ratio would've been perfect for me. But at the same time, I play a lot of heavy games too, for which I needed a big battery capacity. Sony just disappointed me in that department. I hope, Xperia 2 comes with the same screen ratio and a bigger battery...

OH ITS HAS THE BEST NAVIGATION BUTTONS SHORT CUTED BY SIDE SENSE SENSOR ON BOTH SIDE, IF YOU KNOW HOW TO SET IT. I SET THE SENSOR SENSITIVITY AND FIELD TO FULL , AND SET 3 CUSTOM SWIPE GESTURES. SWIPE UP TO OPEN RECENTLY USED APPS, SWIPE DOWN TO SEE NOTIFICATIONS PANEL, AND SWIPE TWICE TO BACK FOR PREVIOUS ACTION. IT WORKS PERFECTLY ALL THE YIME 99% REGARDLESS ON ANY APP WE AR USING EXEPT CAMERA APP. THE GOOD THING IS WHEN BROWSING PHOTOS/GALLERY WITH FULLSCREEN OR ANY WHERE THAT NOT SHOWING BOTTOM NAVIGATION BUTTONS, THAT 3 CUSTOM GESTURES NAVIGATION SIDESENSE WORKS INSTANTLY. SO I NEVER NEED TO SWIPING THE BOTTOM SCREEN ALL THE WAY DOWN TO UP FOR NAVIGATION BUTTONS TO BE SHOWING UP.

Great review Juan! Just subscribed! You do a great job of what I call "keeping it real". I just got the Xperia 1 and agree with your assessment. This is a great device that does some things different. The battery life it on par than my wife's Note 9 or my friends S10+ more or less. Coming from a XZ Premium it's a big camera and display update. I also agree that the Sony needs to market better and online reviewers are more critical of brands with less market presence. Again, thanks the quality objective review.

Can't lie. I would take 16x9 4k over any of the new resolution options any day of the week. The only content i consume on my phone that isnt 16x9 is the couple of mobile focused youtubers who have switched to a wider aspect ratio. And that makes up far less than 1% of my phone use time. I never felt constricted scrolling on FB/twitter/reddit/discord on 16x9, and i wouldn't call the new ratio of my s10+ an upgrade that i notice in that regard. Call my cynical, but i think the entire point of switching to these new aspect ratios was just to have bigger numbers for your screen size on the spec sheet. It's another one of those changes that came out of nowhere, and left me wondering, who asked for this? (Sort of like every single move in the smartphone industry over the last few years) Just give me a specced bumped v20 with updated software and oled display. Please. I beg you.

Phone trends flip WAY too fast for the market to really respond. Consumers don't get a chance to "vote with out wallets" any more. That said, screen shape is definitely a "different strokes, for different folks" situation. After the Razer 2 last year surprising me, I liked this skinny bar a LOT better than I thought i would.
@AndyPanayiotou27

If scrolling through feeds/texts/articles isn't a primary use it might not be that big of a benefit. Something to think about though is split screen use. A taller aspect ratio would help in listening to a video while reading an article/going through a feed, while keeping both at a comfortable size. Agree though, that it wouldn't be a noticeable benefit if you overwhelmingly use the phone for video or photo consumption. At least there's variety for different uses.

@@SomeGadgetGuy Me too - having used the Xperia 1 for two months now, I am generally very pleased with the phone and particularly the OLED 21:9 screen. Watching 21:9 content is just amazing, and zoom cropping in KZfaq is actually not so bad. For social media and music playlists on Spotify 21:9 is fantastic - you get to see a lot of content. So far no problems using the phone single handed due to the phone being quite slim. What else - battery is fine, photos are great and 1080p video is amazing. 4K stabilizing should be better and fingerprint scanner is a bit sensitive. Sony Mobile confuses me. I loved them for about 3 years (had Z5P and XZP) then I started to see the flaws. Yeah they update but it doesn't fix the issues. Brick design fell way out of style (until apparently the Note 10 brought it back). Photo and video quality fell way behind, and is still there based on reviews I've seen. Promising the best audio experience but removing a front facing speaker and the headphone jack. The only redeeming feature is the screen and it's not enough on its own to justify the purchase.

Fact that Sony has started advertising premium Bluetooth headphones with LDAC since 2014, no wonder if they removed the headphone jack. But still, kind of sad decision.

i have xz premium ( to take advantage of 4k on a carboard type vr headset but that was a stupid idea as snapdragon 835 is too slow to playback 8k vr video when screen is in 4k) but i had a big problem with the camera : sony locked up camera2 api so i cannot use gcam for example (impressive night sight + best awb i ever saw on a camera even compared to my apsc camera), can you run gcam on the xperia 1?

@JuanBagnell Can you display charging times as a measure of mAh per 30 minutes instead of % per 30 min? I find that 20% of phone A does not equal 20% of phone B.
@SomeGadgetGuy
@SomeGadgetGuy 4 жыл бұрын
I mean the math is pretty easy right? Phone A has a 3300mAh battery and charges 30% in 30 minutes. Phone B has a 4000mAh battery and charges 28% in 30 minutes. Which phone charged a greater overall capacity?

They couldn't understand why the numbers got smaller? That's some bull s*** That bit was really funny. I've never really understood why it is Sony seems to take advertising for granted where their phone is concerned I mean if it's one company that should know the importance of advertising it's them before the Sony had these massive bezel which I didn't fancy but I understand how some people didn't mind them especially for gaming. I find this new Xperia to be somewhat appealing I think if a lot more people knew of it they would buy it

Wanna push a phone? Record 2min 4k (approx 50mb/s) video sample, edit that in "3dLut"(beta app) with compression off. Grading with Luts on a phone is great. 😁 (Also mind blowing🤯, they are REAL Luts, not filters.😲) Beware the 4gb file size limit that some phones have. File system size limits cripple video editing on Android. 😨 Would also love it if YOU could test this "file size limit" difference in reviews. The information is really hard to find, [even OEM's don't provide it😒], even though it's such a simple thing to test! 1)Grab a (3.9gb approx) 5-10min 4k clip (50mb/s approx). [Close to 4gb as you can ensures we find the limit😉] 2)Open "3dLut" beta app, turn compression and water mark off in options. 3)In "3dLut" pick your clip from file system. 4)Edit your clip to your satisfaction (need web connection to download Luts) 5)Hit "Save to gallery". At this point it will start checking the file/edit, and then start editing/saving it (percentage complete viewable at this point). 1)If it finishes with no crashes congratulations you have a larger limit and probably never need to worry. 2) It runs into the file size limit, it will give you back an error, and the video will be corrupted. 😒 Check the file size of the corrupted video and you should see it's about 4.03gb or something close to that 😒 (system max file size 4gb). P.s. My GoPro clips come in 4k 50mb/s, after the colour grading they normally go up to 4k 100-120ish mb/s (compression off). Figured you'd love this for more utility on mobile edits at events. 😁 Help fight KZfaq's terrible compression. 😂
