There definitely is some good vlogging out there but almost everyone is copying Casey. Lol having that refined KZfaq studio seems to be the ticket. I personally like real world tests outside because having someone talk about it fully controlled in a studio or only showing the best quality doesn’t tell the whole story.

I think vlogging cameras are more important to test and review than the higher end gear because it's one area where there is still room for massive improvement. If you just record in a studio with tripod and lights, most cameras from the last five years will do the job perfectly, but with the advancements in stabilisation and miniaturisation we're still seeing significant step changes in cameras aimed at vloggers. Stabilisation has always been an issue for me as a travel vlogger on a boat, and it's only now that Sony is starting to look like a feasible alternative to Panasonic with its in-camera AI. And yes, there are still loads of vloggers out there, but even if there weren't, there's always a market for compact video cameras (travel, documentary, PoV, run and gun etc).

Smartphone doesn't have built in ND, optical zoom, or a flip screen to use the best lens and see yourself at the same time though... There's so many usability benefits that make these cameras a way better choice than a phone, for people that want to step up to better than "good enough" without jumping up to heavy gear with detachable lenses. Compact usability shouldn't be brushed off so easily.

GoPro 9, 10/11 is more than enough to vlog with in 2023 and you've got many third party ND filters to choose from. .... in comparison you get 10bit color 60fps @4000k. ... I was ready to buy the Z1 mark II. it's a disappointment really. I'll save for an ZV-E1. ... it maybe twice the price. but the the ZV1ii isn't even half as good.

The only content creator I watch who still does "walking and talking" style vlogs is Kasey from Camera Conspiracies. He's also one of the few content creators that actually has a good reason to do it. He's walking to the grocery store and has limited time to shoot videos. In most other cases it makes more sense to just put the camera on a tripod and shoot a regular talking head video.

It seems like the most attractive form factor for this style of video shooting would be something like a GoPro, but definitely not in the body of a traditional camera. I think what Peter Santenello produces with his GoPro works terrifically for what he does. Time/tech moves fast. I remember when Casey Neistat made a video showing what he called the best camera, a Canon 80D.

The thing with the smearing is always an issue when you mix electronic or gyro stabilization with slow shutter speeds. Sometimes it's really bad on FPV Copters. In instances where I might get a lot of shake I usually find it a good tradeoff to set my shutterspeed to 1/(4xFPS). Most of the time this works quite good for me.

I love these little compact cameras they're so underrated because people are fine with their phones, but stabilisation, built in ND, optical zoom, flip screen to use the best lens are all huge usability benefits nobody talks about when preaching about their phone quality. It would be so easy to get one of these right, so idk what's holding them back. Honestly the Canon G7XIII was basically perfect with the flip up screen, it just needed Dual Pixel Auto Focus. Now, if they could keep up with 4k60 at least, and have web cam/live stream functionality for those IRL twitch streamers, they'd completely dominate the vlog market. Come on Sony/Canon just commit one time. Build it and they will come. 🙏

in fact, original ZV-1 could be used as a web/streaming cam with latest FW. I use it right now with external mic plugged in PC (micro USB port in ZV-1 does not transmit sound from built-in mics). I'm sure mark II does it better and with sound thanks to USB-C.

The studio quality cameras are heavy and impractical when filming a walk or vlog. In some neighborhoods, it might be like waving a giant flag saying "rob me." I have heard people criticize the GoPro line as low quality compared to this and that studio cam, but the GoPro can go where other cameras can not. I feel like tech review people tend to film in safe or studio environments so they lose touch with the reality of most camera consumers.

I feel like its still a lot easier to fake an expensive camera look with one of these than it is with an Iphone. The progress on my 14pro max is excellent, but it still has that plastic oversharpened iPhone look. Having control over picture profiles and tone mapping is just a huge bonus in my opinion for something that fits in your pocket. 10 bit would have been a big bonus in my opinion but I'm betting this processor is about on fire as is lol...

The “real” camera also provides a better workflow with SD cards because transferring footage off of your phone is AWFUL 😂😂😂. Small cameras like this also keep your phone storage from filling up. Lots of people who don’t use TikTok or reels don’t understand how much it crippled your storage for daily life, so this camera is a cheap solution.

GU, I bought the ZV-1 when it was first released (per-ordered actually form B&H) it has spent nearly its entire life in my studio as my 4K overhead camera when I am doing a demo, package opening or PC build, and it works very well for that use-case. I do not see a need to consider getting the Mark 2, since I only need one of these and none of the new features would assist with my content creation. By the way, I recently purchased the ZV-E1 to replace my stationary Panasonic camera, due to its Full Frame, AI, and 4k HDMI output for Streaming. I also have the the middle camera, the ZV-E10, that I use on a smaller Gimbal for those rare interview an\d computer store visits, or when I need a 3rd 4k camera for a specific Stream. What do you think about my usage strategy?
@ProjectLM_
@ProjectLM_ Жыл бұрын
I think I fit the target audience for this camera. I'm not a "walk and talk" vlogger, but I love taking videos with friends and family of fun stuff we do together, and edit it all together in a video. Similar to how people used to use camcorders for home videos way back before digicams and phones took good quality video. But for that use case, my phone does a good enough job and is always with me. And when I want better image quality (especially for photos, or for low light), my Sony RX100 VA or the original ZV-1 already offers most of what this offers for a much cheaper price. And it's not a necessity either, it's just a fun hobby for me, so something like this is a tough sell imo.

Makes sense. And I’m pretty sure that something like the ZV-E1, even though that would be a SERIOUS upgrade over any phone and also any typical compact vlogging camera, is so expensive and maybe not even portable enough anymore that someone like you would probably never be interested in buying one. Correct?
@ProjectLM_
@ProjectLM_ 11 ай бұрын
@@rickbiessman6084 That's correct! I do have an a6400 for casual photography (and soon upgrading to the a6700 for that nice IBIS/digital video stabilization combo). But it's still bigger than I like and, more importantly, attracts a ton of attention. I still keep the kit 16-50mm lens for compact "vlogging" if I already have the a6400 with me for trips. But if I know I'm just only shooting casual pics and vids with friends, I prefer the form factor of my RX100VA with its OSS. But if the ZV-1 II had OSS, I'd be a lot more tempted.

Ive been using the original ZV1 for KZfaq content for 2 years but not vlog style. More journalism/doc style shooting my wife as the subject for talking head with the sony grip. I use a compact shotgun mic for audio and its sounds great from an arms length. I shoot aperature priority with active stab and a dynamic color setting in 1080/60. For our use case (travel) it has been awesome because of the size and price point/capability. It has been a workhorse and the ZV1M2 is high on the list for the improvements listed are my only pain points with the M1. Mount/USBC/short focal length. Im grappling with comparing the M2 to the A6700 and FX30 as potential upgrades, but at nearly 2x and 3x cheaper respectively after adding an appropriate lens, the M2 is hard to argue against. Add the size/weight into the equation and I am likely still the market for it.

My GoPro (for trail running/hiking footage). If I'm doing something more serious and wan't better image quality I skip right over the middle man "point and shoot" and go straight to a full mirrorless system with the FX3 and FX30. These point and shoot cameras can't be selling well anymore... but they must be selling some considering they keep making new ones?

I take a ZV-1 to every shoot we do and use it for build documentation. It's also my go-to when I'm out with the family. We aren't really a 'phone' family and the ZV-1 is perfect for snapshots. The images are crisp and clean, the zoom goes from (just barely) wide enough to (just barely) zoomed in enough and I'm so happy to have one camera in my kit that doesn't require a separate lens. We still do travel vlogs like this, but when we can we put the camera somewhere, as the stretched arm is always wierd in the frame. We use the original ZV1 and like it a lot. The only big negative point is the audio from the built in mic for us, because of the noise cancelling, which can't be turned of. It sounds very strange at times and sometimes cancels out ambient noise you actually want. So we use the Video Micro on top. However, thank you Gerald for your great in depth reviews, it helped us a lot with our camera choice.

So I actually am uniquely qualified to answer: “who even vlogs anymore?” It’s people on TikTok! It’s just what you said, people are taking their cameras and doing street interviews, some people want to separate their phone from their content storage, and a small camera like this that folds up tiny makes perfect Sense with all of Sony’s easy to use features. I also see people attaching a ZV-1 to their main camera all the time to capture vertical content, and that’s a huge market for this as a “V Cam” rather than a B or C cam. That’s a shame about the ND, but at least it has one. This release means hopefully we can get a new ZV-E10 with the FX-30 sensor because that would finally compete with the Canon R50!!!!

I don't know. Seems like my midrange Android phone can serve better for "vlogging", even my DJI Action 2 or any other phone or action camera with good enough image quality and microphone conection. If you want perfect stabilization there are cheap gimbals for phones and cameras. If you really want a camera, then an interchangeable lens one is another thing, a ZV-E10, Z30, R50, with a small wide lens could serve you better and offer more possibilities. But i think is better to use a phone or an action camera if "vlog" is the only use.

That said, face metering, good auto white balance, and ND + simple background blur are amazing for a webcam where someone might not have great control over their lighting (me, traveling a lot). I've been hoping the new version would reduce the setup to 1 USB cable, almost worth an upgrade for just that. :) Any thoughts on that use case?

Gerald quick clarifying question on the read out speed measurement, given this is a smaller sensor wouldn't we want to see shorter read out times compared to full frame and other larger sensor cameras? Or maybe I don't quite understand the measurements? Let me know if I'm just being dumb!

I personally need a replacement for my A7C with Tamron 17-28mm f/2.8 lens for my main cam and I need at least 18mm on a short lens to replace my 17mm full frame shot. In the studio it's kind of a waste to use a full frame when you have controlled lighting.

I think POV filming is more prevalent than filming yourself these days. Especially in the sort of videos I watch, street photography for example. Either POV or filming someone else.

To answer your question. I think vlogging style filming is still relevant to people who make travel videos. Small creators don’t have the budget for a personal filmer. But as you said, when filming “vlog” style. The traditional filmmaking rules don’t really matter. So yeah crank the shutter and go. Lol. So in fact, your test was very helpful because if I were to buy that camera, I would never follow the 180° rule because that stabilization smearing is just awful looking. So cranking the shutter was a much better image. Either way, no matter what you decide to test your always incredibly insightful.

I actually do vlogs. I started with the ZV1, but went with the A7C now as I was not satisfied with the low-light capability as I am mostly vlogging in the dark.

I think that testing for vlogging is a good acid test to speak to a cameras performance (one aspect, true, but still valid). Regarding vlogging content, for me personally, the fad is over. It's rare I see one that peaks my interest. But maybe it's how I define what a vlog is, who knows. to me vlogs are random, "come on guys, today I am going to buy shoes, follow along and lets see what preplanned unexpected things happen!"

Maybe a better language to use would be single-person operation rather than "vlogging" as it entails both social media creators and people that make documentaries or other kinds of traditional content that would benefit from "vlogging" features. Another interesting point would be IRL livestreaming, as that seems to be the natural evolution of vlogging but comes with an extra set of requirements (max operating time, connectivity to external streaming devices through USB, HDMI or even Wifi)

Would be interesting to compare this to the new Xperia smartphone in terms of image quality and capabilites. I am still very interested in the ZV line since I'm looking for a compact camera to take on hikes & travels and I just don't wanna deal with separate lenses and the bulkiness of a whole system camera setup. On the other hand, I never enjoyed the over-processed look of smartphone cameras, so I'd rather grab one of these.

Xperia looks great, the crunchiness isn't so bad. You will lose the zoom, flip screen, and built in ND though. Also the stabilisation will look better on a dedicated camera not only because it is, but for how you hold a camera and the balance of weight. These little cameras are just way less work than trying to do it on your phone. Plus, you probably don't want to overheat or drain your phone on a hike and not have access to maps, call, etc. if you get lost or something.

This is still massively better image quality compare to Xperia. Xperia after all is still a phone camera, and not even top-of-line phone camera, they do a lot of marketing trying to make it seem like they put a camera in there but between the much slower lens and much smaller sensor, it's just no comparison to a dedicated camera like this one.

I’m not the target audience, but the closing words seem pretty accurate to me. It’ll be interesting to see whether smartphones make cameras like these obsolete altogether (which I believe they will since they mostly have already) or if improvements in stabilization, sensor performance, useability (!) and audio (!!!) can help get the next generation of vlogging cameras get a leg up against smartphones.

My iPhone 14 Pro shoots 4K 60fps, 10-bit video, handles a variety of codecs/options (including ProRes RAW) and has pretty solid OIS all things considered. As a Sony fan, I was really hoping for something that at least started to resemble and include the video specs we've seen out of their more modern bodies for the past three years, more than a few basic software enhancements... This misses the mark.

The ZV-1 II is perfect for green screen. You don't need a large sensor when you can turn your studio lights up. You want a sharper lens, which is at ff/5.6, and the ZV-1 II can do that. Just use the base ISO 800, beyond that it's digital gain.

I think they do literally mean vlog, camera content creators don't really vlog but there are still TONS of channels with vlog content for a variety of different subjects/types of channels and they all still have to use a camera at the end of the day so this is a camera Sony is trying to market to those kinds of creators. that being said its going to be a pass for me. Great vid

I’m a photographer but not a videographer and I just want a lightweight option for video on family vacation that is better than iphone. With that said to your question on if people care about the shutter speed change in video , I didn’t mind the difference. And to your vlogging question, I don’t blog and prefer to zoom on video which an iphone isn’t that good at

I still vlog and Sony is marketing this exactly the way you are testing here for vlogging. So I think they should also improve upon it. I am honestly with you here. A better vlogging "camera" here would be a smartphone. Xperia 1 V even has cinteone and way better stabilisation

Nowadays, I think the people who do ''vlogg'' is mostly like traveling stuff, while they may use a decent camera at the hotel on a tripod, when you are out vlogging on a paradise island or any public space, I don't think many of them use big camera (MLC or DSLR) or even point and shoot (like the ZV1). They mostly use phones, action camera, etc

Video logging implies limited preparation i.e. mostly handheld footage where image stabilisation plays a major role. This is still very common among e.g. athletes (more or less famous) that are not primarily focused on videography, but rather interesting content. I play disc golf almost every one even remotely good seems to have their own "vlog".
