Bringing up your example with American accent exposure, more specifically kids would hear the "General American English" accent that is most prominent in the midwest (often called the "TV accent" as you will most see it with TV hosts and news Anchors, think Walter Cronkite or Johnny Carson) which sits somewhere in the middle of the different regional accents (New England, Southern, Texan, western North Western and even various Canadian), so is often seen as a "Neutral accent".

You're generally right about the northern American accent, but like RP it is a particular brand of northern American - kind of a middle class white suburban accent, if that makes sense.

On a side note, I did something of a personal experiment a couple of years back. For a day, I spoke in a british accent (or the equivalent I had of one at the time) here in the Americas, and the reactions I got from people were kinda funny. I kept getting asked where I was from, where my parents were from, and the genuine interest from people was a genuinely positive. However, I learned that kind of attention, and the sheer amount of it, can also bring about some rather unfortunate effects on foreigners. Being constantly badgered about someone else's curious questions for the umpteenth time does make it difficult to tolerate that kind of behavior, especially when you come across the few unfortunate folks who are infatuated by your voice. Suffice to say, the experiment only lasted a couple of hours (lol) and I went back to normal. Although, I had to put some mental will into talking normally. It was quite interesting.

Ooooohh such a good comment prompt! I’ve always had a California accent but I feel like it has its own personalities. Like I soften my accent and vocabulary to match either a professional context, or when I go to the skatepark, or when I’m making videos. But maybe linguists have another term for that? Well done video Soph!

In Costa Rica we have a peculiar r sound which is pretty similar to the US r... like the number 3 we say it "tress" (pronounced in English, rhymes with stress) I didn't like it that much because it is not the "proper" r so every time I would talk to a hispanic I switched. But then I learned that we share this r with many Latin-American people and hearing it from other parts of the world made me appreciate it more and I'm slowly starting to embrace it. It's still difficult because most people just judge whatever sounds different and I need to find peace with that. I want to add that the sexiness of an accent is very biased as the British empire has set its own standards of beauty in language and the rest of the world has had to adapt without even realizing, similarly as the Greeks set the standards of physical beauty millennia ago...

Accents are mental. I had a housemate at uni who was born in the Northern Highlands of Scotland. Lived there all her life. But because her parents were from the South of England, and her house was so isolated, she had a very English accent. My parents are both Geordies, but my dad was a BBC Radio presenter for many years, and had previously been in the National Youth Theatre, and pretty much lost his accent. He's still obviously Northern English, but he's not all "Howay pet, hoy ya hammer hower here" full-on Geordie. Meanwhile, myself and my older brother were born in Southampton, and in my early years, I spoke with long 'a' sound (caastle, baarth instead of castle and bath). But, when I'd just turned three years old, my parents moved us to the very north of the UK, the Shetland Islands. I don't use long 'a' sounds anymore, and I'm not sure exactly what my accent is. It's not a Shetland accent (though I can do that, and friends have assumed I have a Shetlandic parent as a result), but it does have a wee Scottish burr. My sister, on the other hand, was just two weeks old when we moved here, and her accent is very much a Shetland accent, which is kind of the opposite to my uni housemate. For such a small place, Shetland accents are actually quite varied. When I speak in a Shetland accent, other Shetlanders who don't know me have correctly identified me as having grown up on the Westside of the Shetland mainland. But we have a lot of smaller inhabited islands, which were often very isolated from each other for centuries, because the only way to travel was by boat. So, the accent on the island of Whalsay is very VERY different from other Shetland accents. Whalsay folk will often pronounce the name of their island as "Qualsa", for example. Part of that is also because none of the place names on Shetland derive from English or Scots, because they weren't spoken here. Shetland was Norse-ruled until the 1600's, and we had our own language, known as Norn, which was a mixture of Norwegian, Faroese, Icelandic, German, and some English and Scots. Place names in Shetland are all derived from Norse, but became anglacised when Shetland passed into the ownership of the Scottish Crown, a cartographers were sent to make maps. So, my village was called Vaas, which means voes. This became Waas over time, and is anglacised as Walls. It also didn't help that teachers, ministers, sherrifs, etc were Scots, and that Norn and the later Shetland Dialect were banned in school for years (Shetland Dialect is a mix of Scts, English, and Norn or Norse-derived words). Norn died out in the early part of the 20th century, but dialect is also threatend with extinction, though there are efforts to revive it. And I'm just gonna say, whoever said your accent is disgusting is just wrong. Between it and the huskiness, it's actually very sexy.

12:20 I haven't done any hard scientific research on your statement here in the U.S., but I think the same holds here - many people from industrial or low income areas have a specific accent (e.g. southeastern U.S.) and some have accent stereotypes. A counter to this data is the city of Huntsville Alabama which has a population with one the highest per capita amount of people with advanced degrees (masters, PhDs) due to the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center and other high tech businesses. Great video, and I think your accent is lovely 😊 PS: well done with the Duran Duran background music at 13:15 😉

I love accents, and among the English accents, I prefer the northern ones (coastal Lancashire in particular) and the southwestern ones (i.e. west country). Least fav would be the heavily aspirated, somewhat nasal RP-ish accent that many London-based news reporters have. Difficult to describe in words, but I imagine you know the type.

Don't know if this has been said but all News anchors are taught the Midwestern accent, the one I have, thus it is far more common to here as a child. Plus all tv shows have that same kind of accent unless they are really trying to be authentic which doesn't happen much for kids shows.

As a Texan American (and anglophile) in the US military who lived in the UK for decades (near to Corby of all places!), married to my lovely Leicester lass (now there's an accent for you), and go back and forth across the pond living in both places, my accent has definitely blended. To Americans, I sound a little posh for some unknown reason. To Brits, my accent is easier on the ears than the common LOUD American. It's not quite Mid-Atlantic (think Cary Grant) but many of the same characteristics. However, if I want to make any British gal melt into a puddle, all I have to do is drawl out a pure Texan, "Yes, ma'aaaaam" and tip my hat. Job's a good'un! ;-)

The voice, accent and attitude are all lovely to this Texan. My twang and grammar changes dramatically depending on who I'm talking to. I've moved around a lot having been raised an army brat, worked for a time in Silicon Valley and, oddly, grew up watching British comedy and Sci-Fi shows. Still, I spent the bulk of my life a literal stone's throw from the iconic Southfork Ranch. I assume I range from hardcore rural Texan to an almost North American neutral with the odd British turn of phrase just to confuse people.

I found this vid very fascinating, mainly because I wasn’t aware accent neutralization and accent exposure. I personally don’t judge people’s accents, in fact I have a bit of obsession with accents in a curious kind of manner. I do now understand the concept of familiarity and it does effect my choice of people I prefer to be around with at a subconscious level. I grew up most of my life in Texas (the Dallas/Fort Worth area) I was raised in a middle class upbringing. No one in my immediate family had an accent, only cousins of course. It’s funny everyone I meet asks me where I’m from (as in what part of the US) and when I answer “Fort Worth” they say “hmmm...I thought you were from (insert non-southern state here)” it now makes sense though because I really wasn’t exposed to that kind of accent, nor did I ever make an attempt to ever pick up on it. It kind of didn’t help that I didn’t start speaking until I was 5 and even when I got older I still had trouble with my verbal skills and went through numerous speech therapy sessions as an elementary student until was able speak confidently. Again this vid was fun and informative.

As a non native English speaker I give my voice for the sexiest English accent to Scottish. I find your accent pretty neutral and easy to understand, excellent for YT channel. Since we abroad all heard that posh English I don't think we needed examples, but some would be welcomed for other, to us less known accents... Is Paul McCartney relevant example for Liverpool accent? I watched series "Ideal" a while back and I often wondered is Moz even speaking English. At first I thought it was disgusting, it was hard to follow even with English subtitles, but after watching few seasons it really grew on me. So maybe that guy also thought your accent is disgusting only because he is unfamiliar with it.

Minus the huskiness, your accent is close to my own - I'm hearing a familiar and comforting voice! Northern girl here (born in Blackpool but with family from Manchester and Leeds). Married a lad with very definite London roots. He moved up here when he was 10, so he has a (let's call it a Watford Gap) London accent softened with a few northern twangs, and I've softened my northern accent with some more southern inflections. It becomes more pronounced when we're with each other's families. Hubby goes full London Boy when talking to his mum and I lean heavily into the Pennines. Interestingly, both hubby and my parents have noted that I have a definite "Telephone Voice". Not exactly RP (I keep the short "a"), but very enunciated, and no-one has any idea where I picked it up!

I guess we all adapt our voices to the places we are. I'm from the south, but lived in the North of England for several years. It's not just accents, but expressions - like 'now then' in North Yorkshire that I picked up. Then I moved to the West of Scotland for a couple of years and started talking about 'huns' or 'tims' (football speak). Why does the UK have so many accents? I guess it has something to do with different languages and dialects being anglicised. In the north of Scotland they like to think they have the purest form of English. I'd guess that this was the last part of Britain to become English speaking. And your voice, Soph? It's gorgeous. Serious and sexy :o)

This is the second vid of you that I watched and I wondered where in the UK you were from. You sounded predominantly English (from England) but you also had some Celtic tint to it. That Scottish migration really explains... Also I think your accent sounds great. Personally, I am Dutch. I have grandparents from the East of the country, where Low Saxon is spoken historically, and so do my grandparents, also to me as I grew up. Whenever I talk to someone in Dutch I speak Standard Dutch, but the moment I am mainly with Low Saxon people I switch to a mixture of Dutch and Low Saxon, speaking mainly Dutch with an Eastern accent and making contractions which don't occur in Standard Dutch. As I learned English (same applies to other languages) I started to get disgusted by Dutch accents and shifted my accent to American as well as English (once again the England part) to end up somewhere in between.

Ay up. I'm a Lancashire born scouser living in Australia. I code switch a bit. But weirdly most of my English accent that's left is like yours, not scouse, despite leaving Lancashire at 1 year old. Go figure.

When you’re exposed to international accents you’re more adept at speaking in different accents, some better than others. My personal favourite English accent is the German accent.

Your voice sounds great. Then you did that Irish accent, and wow! That sounds fantastic. I've no idea where the commentor got disgusting from. You are easily understood, your diction is mostly good and you don't use a lot of regional slang that would confuse an International audience. From my own perspective I like the Lancashire base to your accent, It's a third of what I grew up with. Another third is Liverpudlian, as opposed to Scouse. The old Liverpudlian accent is / was deeper and less nasal than Scouse. Think John Lennon as opposed to Jennifer Ellison. Finally the last third was Cockney. Whilst working overseas nobody could really place my accent in the UK. I seem to have developed a regionless English accent, that's not RP or SSBE. Saying that, now I'm back home in the north of England, my accent has picked up a slight northern twang. What I hate about my voice is what I sound like when it's recorded. Without the bone conduction I sound really strange. Another thing I've noticed, as I've started going deaf from Meniere's disease, my voice is changing again. I'd like to hear the person who thinks your English sounds disgusting speak some English for comparison. However I do wonder if English isn't their first language and their dictionary or online translator suggested disgusting instead of one meaning hard to understand, in relation to your northerness. Whatever, your voice sounds great, your English is good and that commentor might benefit from visiting an audiologist, or someone that could teach them some manners, so that they could insult you with a little more class (with a long a /klɑːs/)
